wpegg: Sorry, I'm not used to using steam for anything other than direct purchases. Am I able to redeem a code online (i.e. not through the client). Is there a step before hand that tells me what I'm redeeming?

To put this in perspective, I'm trying to write a web request that will confirm a steam code, and will say what it's for. I intend to do this by sending http requests to steam in the form that would be done if you're browsing the site, and then parsing the response.
You have to use the client, and there's no way to know what you're redeeming before you redeem it. It tells you what you've redeemed when the process is finished. It's not like GOG, or PSN, or Xbox Live.

wpegg: Can someone tell me, what exactly are you guys trading? Is it straight GOG for GOG swaps, or are keys for other platforms being traded? If so, which platforms?
I'm trading a Divine Anthology Steam key that I got with my boxed copy; I'm trying to swap it for a Divinity II GOG code.

I kinda suspected that ;) It works through the client, you enter the code and it activates it, no intermediary steps, it is assumed that you want to add the code to your collection.
I don't know about steam APIs but I guess that function that lets you validate codes by checking them would be open for abuse by people who would generate codes and check for validity :(

Darn it. Looks like I'm going to have to write to steam, what are the odds they'll help?

Thanks for the response.
Trading steam codes is forbidden by their TOS. You may only trade items in your steam inventory.

So steam support isn't likely to help.
Ok guys,

It looks as though my little project is nearing uselessness. Here's what I could provide:

A place where you can both enter in a code. If the code is for a GOG game, it will tell you if it's valid, and what the game is. If it's for a steam game, it will not validate it. Then it will release the keys to the other parties, once you've both agreed you're happy with it.

Basically it could validate GOGs, but nothing else. Would this help anyone, or should I abort?

How does steamgifts check code validity? (Does it?)

It doesn't check the code. You have to send the code trought email, or adding the winner as a friend and tell the code

It doesn't. Playblink requires a steam gift to be traded to their bot, but steamgifts assumes the giveaway creator will send the code himself.
Jeez the scammers are at it hard, least that explains why i haven't had any responses from my pm's not even a no

It would help greatly with the GOG -> GOG trade, because you would be sure the other person supplied a valid code, +1 for the idea
To watch out for that K_1269. on Steam he / she is also known as :

KickFortunee
Kick Axon
WH [ON] Fortune
KickFortune
SandvichU.U
Knutik
KyleN
K_1269
FortuneWoW
KingSize

I have also reported the user to Steam with what they are doing, agreeing to trades (said game swaps in the message), receiving Steam game then not completing with user.

I think it would also help people in Damuna's situation, where they want to receive a GOG code, then they can be sure that at least they're not being scammed.
