So lately I've developed an even more unhealthy fascination with knives. And have decided to remedy the fact that I don't have one.

I've decided to get myself an EDC on a whim, and after some thought I've chosen on purchasing a swiss army victorinox knife. I've managed to narrow my choices to 3: The classic, the rambler and the tinker small. The classic SD and the rambler make for good keychains, but they're extremely small. The Tinker Small looks more like a proper EDC blade while still small, light and non-threatening enought to carry in your pocket comfortably.

Thoughts?

I keep a narrow Olfa blade handy at home. It's basically a high-end boxcutter. Most of my cutting (card, foamcore, basswood, cardboard) requires a very sharp, clean edge to keep the results neat. I do also use it for incidentals like opening packages.

Honest answer? I would get a medium sized one. The small ones are really really small. And you can put the medium ones still on the pocket without any problem (I have the Ranger one so I know what I am talking about). The small ones are really for a keychain and not that useful ;-)

Thought as much, but they do make for very cool keychains.

The tinker small is 84mm while the normal one which has the same tools is 91mm. How useful would you say the shorter blade remains in comparison with it's bigger brother?

I think an 84mm blade is good enough. I've seen a few videos extolling the many virtues of the cadet.

I'd go bigger too. Those little ones feel like toothpicks and as well made as they are, I wouldn't feel secure in their ability to "get the job done."

The difference between Tinker Small and Tinker is barely noticeable (the long blade and bottle opener are a bit shorter), so if you're looking for something to carry in your pocket, Tinker Small looks like the logical choice. It's a far cry from being some small miniature thing that's useless for anything.

Then I also carry a larger spyderco salt knife that clips to my pocket. It's rust proof.

I'd prefer the smaller Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Salt, though. The regular Salt knife is really big and I think I'd prefer a smooth edge more than a serrated edge. The prices have gone up though and I don't want to spend $95 on a knife.

You like knives, huh? Visit a local hunting equipment store, then and buy those sexy serrated blades! They are a real beauty and seem to be perfectly balanced, too! If i could, i would order an authentic pair of tanto from eastern forges, but local laws are shitty and i would have them confiscated. Besides, serrated blades are perfect, should the need to use them arise; with the 7th kyu basic mastery over knife combat (tantojutsu), you can utilize them with great fluidity and unpredictability to your average street thug (or clueless, untrained amateur), especially the water and fire kata armed techniques.

I myself favor those because you can easily conceal them, carry them on your person, plus they are great looking for any collector out there! I even tried to make an amateur contraption akin to a kusari-tanto, but the hole on the knife and the chain parts didn't fit, so i abolished the idea, crafting a very crude (yet effective) kusari-fundo, instead (akin to eastern version of morning star).

Throwing knives seem badass, too, but i cannot find a legal and legalized vendor offering anything like them. I have to make do with togakure-ryu style shuriken, instead and even worse, they are smaller than the normal, combat-ready variety (which can only be imported, alas and hence probably useless to throw against live target, if need ever arises).

Well, I would suggest that you fly to Okinawa and meet Hattori Hanzo.
