You really shouldn't give this a pass.

King of Dragon Pass, the updated version of the seminal strategy/RPG with innovative storytelling, is now available DRM-free on GOG.com with a 50% discount until December 10, 11PM UTC.

Almost 20 years after its original release, the fantasy classic returns with a sharper UI and the lovely illustrations cleaned up to be more on par with modern standards. Its seminal worldbuilding and addictive gameplay are as absorbing as ever, plus the added content promises to give veterans extra incentive to return to this wonderful saga.

This is a free update for all owners of the classic version, which is now included in this as a bonus goodie.

Vythonaut: Now, listen to me: DON'T ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS GAME, JUST GET IT!! ;)

Ghorpm: NNo, no, no, it should be:

DON'T ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THIS GAME, JUST PLAY IT!! And get it if you don't have it yet

;)
That's right: PLAY, PLAY, PLAY! :)
Duck people: Some of your nobles killed many of ours. We demand restitution!
Me: Can we offer some cows?
Duck people: We want silver! Silver!
Me: Piss off.
Me later: *sends an emissary* Could we have our yearly tribute of food increased?
They hated that. :D
Great! Thank you for the much appreciated upgrade.
I had the game sitting in the dust for a couple of years... I guess it's time to play it! :)

Cheers for this, and for doing it the right way.

Avogadro6: [...] How are customers who don't read the forum 24/7 supposed to notice this update?
The same way they notice updates that aren't flagged.
Wow, what a great surprise! Thanks for the free update, GOG, A Sharp, and HeroCraft! Even better - thanks for keeping the original as a playable option.

And that shouldn't happen for an update this big! Come on Gog...
Thank you for keeping the original game and all the extras available with it. That's how such upgrades should be handled! And not even the price is increased. :)

The only sad part is that the updated version does not come with Linux support.
edit: never mind.

Hm, I updated it.

I am not terribly fond of the new design, but that might just be a question of getting used to it.

But I find the side-scrolling list filters, for instance when you search your favors owed and due, very impractical. Took me several minutes to figure that out and continue the forced-upon- me tutorial.

NO INDIVIDUAL SAVES?!? WTF!

Also, where's the QUIT button?!? Edit: I had to Alt F4 the game...

I am so going back to the former version!

No way to play in a window either?

Thanks for this, but it needs a few more quality of life fixes...
So uh... did they ever enable you to modify the number of crafters in the remaster? No ability to make a peaceful win happen kinda stinks due to the nature of this game.

And yeah, I doubt QOL updates will happen after how long they've had to do it. But that was all for mobile's sake. A good port from mobile this was not, but it works and it's still KODP on OSX. I can live with it, and the original's there if I want it.

It shouldn't happen for any game update. But to be fair, this was a News announcement, i.e. it was listed on the home page, so those not browsing the forum but visiting the site and checking the announcements most likely saw it.
Never managed to get the original to run...

Time to try it again.
Played it for a few hours yesterday (never played the original). Was a pretty good experience - quite the unique game
Some quick notes:

1. There are some help boxes that make the first steps in the game easier for newcomers.

2. As in the tablet edition, some mechanics that were arguably less used, and most will not miss at all, have been slightly simplified. One of them was the selection of crops, for honoring the three goddesses (of wheat, barley and oat, IIRC). This allowed to trim your agricultural land use, for example paying heed to omens about crops for the coming year, combining it with magic spent on crops at the sacred time, the clan's background, temples/sacrifices to gods, heroquests, number of farmers available, land surface assigned for agricultural use vs pastures and forest and whatnot. Wheat is the most fragile but produces more, while the oat is the sturdiest, and barley something in between, thence if you expect a bountiful harvest, it made sense taking the risk and sowing more wheat, and the opposite when the harvest was expected to be poor (due to droughts, cold weather, etcetera). This whole mechanic has been nixed; I will miss it, but otherwise I am fine.

3. It has been said before: for quitting, just press ESC (not that difficult to figure out).

4. On a tablet it looks good, but some will prefer the larger screen of a PC/TV (actually the game is perfect for a TV and a couch, someone ought to check how it works with a controller).

5. The original game is offered as a Windows executable installer.

EDIT: Removed extra parenthesis.
