Got into Berserk this year and think its one of the best stories ever written. Read through the manga first and thought it was phenomenal; the anime is great as well. RIP Kentaro. You were a master.

Was really looking forward to the day Guts got a hold of Griffith, or seeing what was to become of Pimphand Rickert, Casca or the Baki Raka clan.

Berserk was on my to watch list. What makes it good? This is why people should get easier access to scans assuming it was plaque related.

Well, there was some speculation that smaller scale projects like Gigantomachia were intended to train his assistants to work more independently on Berserk chapters, although that could just be wishful thinking on fans' part. And even if there was a contingency plan in place and had the significant points planned out it still might not be possible to continue the series or it would suffer a severe drop in quality.

Shirow Masamune and Rikido Koshi's current series is being done by their assistants, after Rikido Koshi stepped back to a "Series Composition" role due to health issues (Shirow Masamune's basically like that one guy on every school project that only shows up at the first planning meeting and never again, leaving all the work to everyone else but still getting credit for it. Just because it's apparently set in one of the GitS universes.) So there's some precedent. Though that's probably still not all that comparable to this situation since they would naturally have a lot more structure/guidance/feedback, and the art is a lot simpler by several orders of magnitude.

Graphic violence, gore galore, demons, sex, nudity, not shying away from depicting controversial things like rape or child murder, you know, all the good stuff that's a big No-No in these dark times we're currently living in.

It's a small wonder how Miura was never "cancelled" by the West.

Watched the original anime when it debuted. Loved it. Dark Horse released the English version of the manga awhile back but I could never find it. In 2018, my kids got me a great father's day gift of issue 1 to 20. Been collecting since. I've yet to see the new anime but I will check it out soon. His work will live on forever. RIP.

Let's save this for another post, but I assure you, the west has canceled people and media from japan before, and recently. I don't know the guy's body of work enough to specifically know why or how, but if we have to talk about this, let's have some dignity and make a new thread on it to discuss details.

Sad and heartbreaking. He was a great artist. Berserk might seem like all blood and gore, but it was actually also very complex and humane. My deep sympathies to his family and loved ones.
