Hello everyone!

Sometimes my friend or my cousin would come over and we'd play some NBA or Gears on my 360. Occasionally during these gaming sessions there would be a lengthy silence, and if it stretches too long it would become awkward. Does anyone have some tips for keeping a conversation afloat? Or maybe some advice on starting a new one?

Edit: I forgot to specify that this question for gaming with people I know. When I random with strangers I actually expect long periods of silence.

For sports games, every time a goal/point/run/etc is scored, take a shot (of liquor). Repeat until hilarity ensues.

I'm guessing you're about 13. The awareness of social awkwardness is a developmental step though where you realize there's not enough to you or others to make things interesting. It's supposed to lead you to personal development by learning more about the world and getting some life skills and career skills. The more you know and the more you do to improve your life, the more conversation material you'll find that you have.

But if that's too much for you then I'm sure bringing up Donald Trump and taking an opposing side will give you a lasting topic.

13?!!! I turned 30 last week! I usually try to avoid political and religious topics because they get often get someone's blood boiling.

I appreciate the advice my friend, but I'm afraid I can't drink. I take two different types of medication and booze interacts with both of them. I even take a pretty high dose of one of them.

Why ruin a perfect gaming session with TALK!?!?!

Unless you´re playing "Super Mario Kart" or "Quake Arena" and it´s all screams and laughs.

Haha, well then. It's the same thing though. You need to develop your own personality type and not try to fit into another category. If you really got along with each other you'd be content in the silence. But since it's uncomfortable then it means there's some problem there that needs to be dealt with. It also usually means that you have healthy conversations elsewhere, so that's a good sign if it's the case.
I usually ramble on about the game. There's a chance you can distract your opponent and throw them off.
Start making what sound like subtle "involuntary" grunting noises. Keep it up until someone busts out laughing. See how long that takes...
Watch any episode of Game Grumps and take some inspiration.
