Hm i think the last ones i bought were Mass Effect 3 (which i never put in the drive, just redeemed the code) and Planescape Torment... kinda prefer digital for games nowadays. Probably because switching discs is annoying ;)

The last physical copy I bought was The Elder Scrolls Anthology a year or two ago (before Morrowind released on GOG).

Last game where I purchased a physical DVD was Hitman Collection (DRM Free) from Amazon:

I am playing all of these on Windows 10 without issue.

I have no problem buying music digitally, though I do like to have a CD (even if just for listening in the car) and I don't really buy movies much.

However I don't ever see myself switching to digital for books as I love the feel of an actual book..

My CD copy also requires the CD in the drive, even when moving up to the very latest patch.

Congrats to the OP for buying one of the most defining RTS games ever (like it or not, it shaped a huge amount of gaming, personally I love it).

He probably purchased an older copy which still had a CD check. Are you talking about The Ultimate Collection?

The former only uses a CD check, nothing worse than Warcraft III, while the latter requires Origin for activation.

Yeah, it was quite an old copy. The copyright info on the back says 2002 so it will have been released some time around then (that was why I was happy to buy it, before the days of really bad DRM)

Damn. Should have got that too then, it was the First Decade one. It just had a warning that it had security software that might make it not work with certain DVD drives. Which sounded to me like it might be bad DRM so I didn't risk it just in case.

I still occasionally buy physical releases of games, as long as they're not tied to Steam which, to be honest, there aren't many left. Last one I bought last year was Lost Horizon 2. Great adventure game series! Too bad they're not on Gog.

Yeah, I might do. We're not often in town though (and having spent an hour wandering around today there's probably no reason to go back for another 6 months... it's that kind of town), plus I do actually have Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge on Origin already when they gave them away free. So really it would only have been for Generals.

Anyway. I'd forgotten how damned hard WC3 is... just had my ass handed to me during my first skirmish (must remember that levelling up heroes early is the key to victory...)

If it's anything like Starcraft back in the day, there is probably small update programs you can download which contain the whole patch; Better if you know what the best version of the patch to download. For D2 it's 1.09d, For WC3 i don't know as i never played it.

Woluwé-St-Pierre Brussels second hand store, and Divine Divinity. Four discs, years on, and even with Windows 7 - it goes. Still.

Pay for Dragon Age Inquisition for three physical discs for 70 sterling that implement ... for a long time. Not even a basic booklet included, btw.

Immediately it leads unto 2-3 patch download upfront. And then to another... or another. And never is Inquisition a proper PC game, but a day zero console port, all those patches later.

I think it was better indeed when gaming discs were supposed to be a proper, playable release.

I have a mid-range internet, which I still find quite expensive, really. At lower speed all this would have been even worse.

Those "ten years on" four Larian discs sort of imply to me that rather than assuming infra-unlimited fans, design for your fans, already! And story before infra, please.

Well, CollectorsEditions are the only ones I´d still buy physical---last one was Witcher III (well, or HeartsOfStone, but that´s more a card game then the physical version of a game.
Anyways, it will probably stay at that place for some time---the ones that might be the next physical versions will be Backer-Editions, so nothing to buy there. :D

Forgot to answer this; no I didn't need their client. The download they give is like a download manager thing (a different one for each file rather than a client or something) which just downloads the installer and runs it (but the installer is still there and I can run it again / back it up).
I'm always connected to broadband anyway so I couldn't say 100% there's no need for a connection to play, but it looks like the game is actually DRM free (bar the key code, but even that just says that two people can't connect to Battle.net at the same time using the same key)
