I have a 600Mbits/s (=75 MBytes/s) cable modem connection (I get similar results with speedtest.net as you), so I tried various downloads on various gaming platforms, with my laptop connected wired (just to make sure wifi congestion doesn't affect it), and my kids and wife were sleeping so they are not using the internet either.

1. GOG offline installer with the Edge browser: (Biomutant) 24 MBytes/s
2. GOG Galaxy offline installer download: (Biomutant) 70 MBytes/s
3. GOG Galaxy: (Biomutant) maybe 55 MBytes/s on the average (fluctuated a lot between 20-65 MBytes/s, sometimes stabilizing for a longer time to 55 or so)
4. Steam: (Resident Evil 5) 37 MBytes/s on the average (peak: 40 Mbytes/s)
5. Epic Games Store: (GTA V) 70 MBytes/s on the average
6. Ubisoft Connect: (Watch Dogs) 60 MBytes/s on the average
7. EA: (Dead Space 3) 69 MBytes/s on the average.

So downloading GOG offline installers with a web browser is apparently the slowest, but still ok in my case.
GOG Galaxy seems speedier, even for downloading offline installers. I recall hearing GOG's browser and Galaxy downloads come from different servers, so yeah it is possible browser download servers are not as fast. Or maybe they are still more popular than GOG expected, hence congested?

I was a bit surprised Steam was that much slower than other clients, but I don't consider that a bad speed at all either. Maybe Steam just is so popular that it is understandable it is somewhat slower than its less popular siblings, Galaxy included. :)

It would be interesting to hear if you get any faster speed if you tried the offline installer download with the Galaxy client. You can always uninstall the client afterwards in case you don't want to use it. :)

Sounds like a good price, Not so good for me, think i'm paying $30+ for internet right now per month, 10Mbit allows about 20-30Gb a day (so Cyberpunk would take a week to get going full time, or 3 weeks at 8 hours a day when i'm on it at the same time). Years ago in another state it was $60 for like 8Mbit internet

I am using Debian 12 with wine to run windows games and galaxy client just wont work.
Fun fact: Witcher 3 is working (althought i have some problems with version 4).

Not sure if you could set up Galaxy with WINE, just to use the darn downloads. I am actually a bit surprised the speed difference for downloading the offline installer files is that big, between using a web browser or the Galaxy client for the task. Of course it is also somewhat interesting that downloading an offline installer with Galaxy is considerably faster than downloading and installing the game directly with Galaxy.

Also, since 70MB/s is so close to my internet connection's download limit anyway, I was wondering if the Galaxy (and EGS and EA) downloads could have been even faster, in case I had e.g. a 1Gbit/s connection.

But as said, I am quite content with the 24 MBytes/s web browser download speeds as well. I can understand 8 MBytes/s may feel unnecessarily slow, if it could be .e.g. three times (or more) faster.

When I had a 10Mbit/s (1,24 MBytes/s) connection, I didn't have to think about these. :) GOG downloads always felt fast enough, except in the rare cases single downloads were limited to around 450 kBytes/s per file, which for some reason happened sometimes to me many many years ago... but haven't seen that happen for a long time, for me personally. Even back then merely cancelling and restarting the download would make it faster. Or just download several files at the same time, 3x 450kB/s would already use all of the 10Mbit/s speed.

Yeah I sometimes forget how big many games have grown... Having to download Baldur's Gate 3 offline installers for a week would probably mean it has already received another update, and you need to restart the download from scratch...

Not everyone here is as fortunate as me either. If you live in rural areas, the best you can hope for is a mobile 4G connection that may have a weak signal and you get maybe that 10Mbit/s or so... A colleague of mine has been in such a situation because he doesn't live in an urban area, so he has to depend on his mobile connection.

Fortunately monthly data caps or paying per GB or such have not been a thing here for like... ever? Even with mobile data. Back when I still had the slower 10Mbit/s cable modem connection, I used to sometimes speed up my GOG offline installer downloads by downloading some of the files on another PC, using my 4G mobile connection (phone tethering), while another PC was using the cable modem.

it seems typically to be a 70/30 for download/upload, meaning it was likely closer to a 16MBit/s connection. My 10Mbit connection has a 650k/300k rate. Sorry to nitpick on that.

5G as they are pushing it, has like a 300ft range and would need repeaters everywhere. So yeah 4G is the best everyone except those in a city with special 5G repeaters everywhere. Or so i've heard how it works, since 5G is like 80Ghz, and even water droplets in the air can disrupt the signal.

Don't think they were a thing, until the datarate of the infrastructure was getting saturated, then they started selling 5GB/month for insane amounts and the like.

Sounds like it's workable. When i charge my phone i'll sometimes put it on hotspot and make use of the extra bandwidth, which is higher from the phone than it is from my main internet... For a while anyways.

I imagine any faster speed with Galaxy would be down to multiple threads, only limited by your bandwidth or through flow limitations (gates etc). How well Galaxy does that I don't know. I know I can get slightly faster download speeds with the likes of Free Download Manager, using 5 threads. That's a bit faster than I normally get with single thread downloading, though right now it is at least 10 times what GOG is giving me for single thread downloading, where maximum speed often averages around 500 kilobytes a second, instead of the over 4 Megabytes I should be getting.

GOG are lucky I became a customer when download speeds were good, as I know they can be a lot better than they have been for me for the last month or so.

If I was another customer who did not care about DRM-Free all that much or at all, I'd be giving up GOG as a joke right now at the download speeds I am getting.

It really is a ridiculous situation, that GOG appear to be doing nothing about. No feedback about any consultation with CDN Fastly etc.

I update my offline installers reasonably regularly.

Downloads speeds for a single large file historically have been from 25MB/se to 40MB/Sec

For the last week or so, download speeds have ranged from 130KB/Sec (sub 1MB/Sec!) to 4MB/Sec

Testing my connection shows 400+Mbits/sec download speeds and 30Mbits/sec upload to the speedtest server in the same city as the GOG CDN.

I have 500mbit for less than 7$. And it can be even lower cause I live in private house where network maintenance cost more than for apartment users.

That is possible and I didn't test that specifically now (starting several GOG browser downloads at the same time; I might test it later if I remember)...

...but I doubt it, because from the past I recall that increasing the number of download threads in e.g. gogrepoc.py does not increase the total download speeds either for me. (It is still better to have 2 (or more) download threads so that when one file completes, another is already downloading which can instantly use the bandwidth which is freed up by the completed download). I usually keep the number of download threads in gogrepo at 2 or 3, the default is 4.

I recall from the past someone mentioning (possibly in the gogrepoc thread) that Galaxy downloads, even the offline installers downloaded with the Galaxy client, come from a different set of servers than browser downloads. And I recall they had also noticed those Galaxy downloads are at least somewhat speedier.

If that is true, I have no idea what sense there is to keep them on a different set of servers, considering they are supposed to download the exact same files.
