It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

Yeah I didn't really like that either

Also don't they just show big releases on the very top of the site anyway as a big banner? That alone is enough to make me notice the games they're trying to get me to buy, and I already keep an eye on new releases 'anyway' ffs lol

Crosmando: What is that front page, it's completely obnoxious, like a browsing hijacking porn ad, even Valve don't shove their games on release in your face in such an overt way.
avatar
babby: While I thought the front page spam ad was annoying too, I'm pretty sure that Steam (by default) opens up a window advertising a game every time you open it, unless you disable that in the settings.
I wasn't even aware you could disable that.

Also Steam has this annoying new friend window that pops up every time you go there.

Which you can disable, too.

It's fun disabling things.

really? how? I looked but I'm not really good with stuff like that.

Gersen: Well it's the first time they have one of their games exclusively on Gog so you can understand why they are a little over-enthusiastic about it :)
avatar
Crosmando: Too bad Thronebreaker looks like some cheap clicker tablet game.
In other words: It will sell better than anything else released by gog this year, encouraging them to spiral further and further down the drain.

Okay, first you have to get that monstrosity to show up somehow. View -> Friends should do the trick. In the resulting window you should see a cog symbol in the upper left corner, somewhat next your username and icon. That'll open up the Friends List Settings. Under Friends List disable "Sign in to friends when Steam Client starts".

Mafwek: You are implying Valve actually releases their own games!
I even heard this at walmart over the PA.

And that's just one game.

pkk234: The 'skip and never see again' button has worked for me.

Ancient-Red-Dragon: How does that work? Based on cookies? If so, it's not going to work for anyone who values their privacy and therefore deletes cookies often.
Probably based on cookies because it happened again in a different browser for me. In this case one has to choose: either privacy or annoying ads or not using GOG.com as landing page at all.

The perfect solution would be to purge not all but only most cookies and keep the ones that are actually useful, but I guess this is not possible right now.

Panaias: Even though I am not a fan of these games, during the past few days I grew tired of GOG constantly breaking the throne in my face, so much that it actually has the opposite effect: now I will surely never even think of buying that game.
Had exactly the same thought. Their advertisement strategy is so annoying, I'm pushed rather away from GOG by it. I would really like to have a word with their marketing department. They really need to improve and there must be a negative reaction or they will never learn.

Just to add another comment to this "oh God NEVER MEANS NEVER, GOG".

But also my main annoyance is the feeling that they want to remove the community. They have removed the text snippets of the news, in one decision that I wonder who thought it was a good idea (and yes, I guess there are 100342897432 threads about it already but who knows the keywords to find them) and that makes the discussions about sales or new releases basically vanish, but with that I wonder if someone wanted to take the branding and throw it to the bin and make something reminiscent of DOTEMU.
