Metro Exodus was only updated yesterday, along with the addition of the free SDK DLC.

It was updated to -
setup_metro_exodus_1.0.8.37_(64bit)_(60633)

Now today, partway through me downloading, it has been updated again to -
setup_metro_exodus_1.0.8.38_(64bit)_(61919)

You do realize, that to download all the updates, it was around 201 GB.
Now, after I have downloaded yesterday and today, around 61 GB of that, I have start all over again for most of that, maybe all of it, if you are also going to update the Enhanced Version files. I dare not start, just in case. Actually I did 4 GB more, as one file failed and I had to redo, so 65 GB I downloaded.

How fair is that?
Are you going to reimburse me for my wasted time?

Why the hell cannot you leave last version files up for at least a week or two after updating ... you or the DEV or whoever is responsible for this idiocy.

How could you not think that plenty of folk would be in the middle of downloading yesterday's update to the game?
I bet plenty haven't noticed the mismatch in files between those they had already downloaded and are now downloading. Luckily my program revealed the issue.

If there is some catastrophic bug, just do a patch file for Dog's sake.

So does that mean you think it okay to update a huge game one day, and then update it again the following day, wasting our time and effort, and in some cases a limited web connection?

It was gonna take me probably three days to download, providing it all went fine. Now I have to start again, but because only half the files have been updated again so far, I feel I need to wait just in case updating the other half is imminent.

My policy is that I buy a game and start downloading what I paid for immediately. Now I am forced to wait for how long I don't know. It is just not right, and I am not being entitled in any way, so get mad at the right quarter not me.

P.S. You also need to consider, that anyone who was partway through downloading and who did not notice the file name change, will have a broken backup, that they may to their horror discover one day.

The SDK should have been a separated product, I agree.
I added to my account after downloading the latest version of the game. Should not have activated it at all, I'm never going to use it anyway. As an altternative the SDK should be listed as Bonus, not as part of the main installers.

The current version is 3.0.8 (assuming that the enhanced edition is supposed to replace the original one).
The version 1.0.8 is not the current one, so I guess that's the reason they don't offer patches.
No idea why 1.0.8 got two updates so quickly.

The best solution in my eyes would be two game entries: "Metro Exodus" and "Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition", both with the SDK as "Extras" download.

Not such an issue for me, as my GUI for gogcli.exe lets me checkbox just what I want to download with one button click.

So I had been working through the list of files. Did the two DLC first, then the SDK DLC, and then started downloading the regular version of the game, got up to the BIN 6 file and it showed a progress issue, which I determined was due to a file name change.

If I had limited Internet connection, I'd just disabled all updates and turned them on only after reading something about (official changelogs or forum posts). And I wouldn't download any SDK cause it's big thing by definition (if I don't want to build a mod by myself).

To be honest : this happens all the time with big updates. (Not that that would make it any better)

I've become hesitant to download, say, the newest TW3 or CP2077 versions immediately after release, because I've learned in the past, that - almost inevitably - there will be another, newer/patched version (or two, or three) waiting around the corner, in that same week.

Edit: I think it was Kingdom Come: Deliverance, where they managed to update the installers, while I was downloading...and they kept updating the files for several days in a row.

I simply waited a month. Then it seemed to be safe to download. Until the next update the week after that. ;) shrug

Thanks .... but someone forgot to tell GOG about that. :( Well it has never happened to me before with a large game, and I think this is only the second time it has happened to me while downloading game files, and I have a lot of games at GOG, and buy some every week. I have of course read about it happening to others, but I don't recall it ever being the day after the last update.

Ultimately I would not have an issue, if GOG did not nuke the previous version so quickly. Hell the old links don't even need to still be visible, just still exist for downloading, with like I said previously, a week or or two of grace.

Just as well I waited .... but then, maybe they will update again tomorrow, and I'll just be chasing my tail and wasting time downloading again. A shame I cannot download 201 GB in the blink of an eye.

Certainly not helpful that there is no Changelog entry explaining anything.

The current system with updates is truly idiotic, and it could so easily be done better, keeping us all happy.

Surely keeping customers happy is a must, if you want to guarantee continuing success.

This stopped me from playing Xbox One games for a while: I'd play some games, then come back a month later. I'd launch and it would require an update, so I'd update & then not play for a month because it took overnight to download.

Happened a couple times.

GOG doesn't autoupdate any more though, does it? All the past updates I've had would be in my "downloads" tab & not download for a couple days unless I manually hit download.

I was thrilled they did that for the same reason the OP says. It would get really frusterating.

Mate, like someone said above just give it a couple of days, a week, a couple of weeks before the updates stabilise before going all-in on downloading the offline installers on "big" games. I know the temptation of backing up immediately. You get a little FOMO, or completionist about your collections. Or you fear not doing it now might make you forget later. But I've held off on TW3 for the reasons you're having issues with Exodus. They're still patching, and it's happening too quickly to bother redownloading the whole package.

Are they delivering patches instead? If so, just keep grabbing the patch files only until the changes stop rolling in then replace the lot with a complete version. If GOG (god forbid) goes kablooy in the meantime you'll still have the full available version but you'll have to install with the patches as well.

If no patches, which sucks, then what will we miss out on by waiting just a little? Most likely nothing.

I'm not being patronising, I know you know this stuff. But take it from another kindred soul who likes to immediately keep their collection up-to-date and is also frustrated with wasted effort. Just ease up on the reins a little. I know your pain, we'll get through this. :P

I am not complaining about any necessary updates, what I am complaining about is nuking the last file versions all too soon, that is where things are wrong, and my rage about that is not misplaced.

And it is not hard to do that, so ask yourself - Why don't they?

And ask yourself, why they uploaded updates and then replaced them a day or so later. What the hell was the point of that exercise when it is 201 GB all up? Who would likely have downloaded it all in that space of time, especially as has been advised by some in this thread, to wait a week or so?

None of it makes any sense, and none of it is respecting the customer.

In reality we should all have access to past versions of games at GOG that we own. But if GOG can't do that, they should at least give us access to the last version for two weeks after an update has been uploaded. That should just automatically happen, and so avoid threads and complaints like mine, all very reasonable complaints.

I could wait a week or more, then try again, and have the same thing happen ... there is no communication and no guarantee of anything and I'd be making a guess about it stabilizing.

Surely the logical time to get an update is immediately after it has been uploaded, because there should be a period of grace before those files are replaced.

That's where my angst lies, there is no period of grace, it is purely take your chances.

I can and have tolerated it when it is only small files, but 201 GB is a whole different story.

No-one should be defending what is happening, it purely and simply isn't right, end-of-story.

I can be patient and often are and will be, but I believe in speaking out when things are wrong.
