amok: RWS and gOg have fallen out the last couple of years. doubt it will ever happen now, as neither of them seem to be in any hurry to patch up the relationship.
avatar
KiNgBrAdLeY7: What exactly went sour, in their affair???
lack of communication, mostly, and RWS claiming gOg is very difficult to work with. according to RWS the main problem is lack of response from gOg, such as patches sent to them get lost somewhere and emails not replied and so on and so forth, and that gOg use quite archaic systems for both technical (patching, delivery of software etc) and for the contracts.

timppu: The fact that GOG chose to keep the earlier installer there as as an "original version" in the extras indicates there is some bigger change in the new installer?
The "original version" has been available as an extra ever since 2014 and contains the game as it was back in 2003, before Running With Scissors released it on Steam and started updating it again (with just one of those updates releasing on GOG 4 years ago).

Ah yes, right you are. Now I see that the new 2.2 GB installer has actually replaced this one:

setup_postal2_2.1.0.10.exe (size: 1.76GB)

Anyway, there is still quite an increase in the size (to 2.21GB), not sure what. Could just as well be some added dependencies like DirectX9 installer or whatever, I can't really tell... Maybe I'll try to install it to see what it looks like now, but I have no idea what would be different from earlier version. Or just open the installers with innoextract to see what they have eaten.

Too bad there is no changelog, but considering how Postal 2 has been announced as an abandoned GOG game, it is interesting it now gets some attention from someone.

liquidsnakehpks: Pretty sad that both postal 2 expansion and postal redux is held up here, i have purchased the expansion on steam(goes on 90% sale frequently ) but held off playing it , till it was patched up good.

However i completed postal redux and it was great , had some performance issues on launch they are probably fixed now.

Hopefully both of these show up soon.
avatar
tfishell: Oh wow the expansion already goes to -90% off? I gotta get on that.
yeah i also snagged postal redux because steam gives you additional discount if you complete the collection for a particular game, it was 0.90 $ i think

timppu: I have no idea what this new installer is about, I haven't tried to install it yet.
Well, there's one change. Get a load of this: The latest version has a Paradise Lost button in the main menu that is supposed to launch the Paradise Lost DLC (you even have the option to have the game create a desktop shortcut for the DLC). Check out the Postal subforum, someone recently posted screenshots.

Also, when I change from windowed mode to fullscreen, the image goes almost pitch black. I haven't really tried the latest version further than that, since I'm not really inclined to play an FPS in windowed mode.

fronzelneekburm: ...
I also went ahead and installed (and uninstalled) both the new and earlier installer versions one after another, and with a quick check the differences I could see were (the earlier version is a couple of weeks old download, I think it was updated on 25th of January):

- Yep, that Paradise Lost menu option has been added. If you click it, it tells you to check your installation (as obviously the DLC is not (yet?) on GOG). That option was not there in the older version.

- The Performance Options seem to have changed somewhat. I checked them quickly because the 5021 changelog (link on the Steam Postal 2 pages) mentions that some non-functional Level of Detail-options have been dropped from the Performance Options in the version 5021.

- The old version runs in fullscreen by default, while the new version runs in a window. Is this better for e.g. Windows 10, or multi-monitor setups?

- The new version ran some Visual C++ 2005 checks and installations at the end of the installation (the old one didn't seem to), which might explain the increased size of the installer. Not sure if there were other dependency checks/installations as well.

All in all, to me this indicates the GOG version just got updated to a "Paradise Lost"-compliant version of the game, which might mean the DLC is finally coming to GOG. At least the publisher was finally able to get some upgrade to the GOG version...

Anyway, even if the GOG version is 5021 now, it seems to be one step behind the Steam version which is apparently currently 5022:

http://store.steampowered.com/news/externalpost/steam_community_announcements/2079952210072387432

EDIT: I am only assuming the GOG version is the older 5021 because that is in the installer file name... but I'll double-check it again, if there e.g. is a subtitle option in the Audio Options (in which case it would be 5022, and the 5021 in the filename is a typo).

Thing is, according to the "What did just update?"-thread, the update arrived on gog somewhere around the 30th. Magmarock was apparently in touch with that RWS guy a few days ago, so I suppose they gave up on whatever ambition they had mustered up after 3 years of not releasing Paradise Lost here. I guess the sequence of events was something like this:

- tfishell contacts the RWS CEO on Twitter, asking them to update the game/release Paradise Lost here
- RWS CEO tells tfishell to get the game on Steam instead
- RWS CEO has second thoughts and they send a new-ish build and the DLC to gog
- gog releases the new-ish build but can't get the DLC to work
- RWS immediately abandons all plans to release the DLC that was "100% coming to gog" (their words)

fronzelneekburm: Already? It's been available for $0.90 as far back as May '16. Just one of the many, many, MANY things that make the lack of a gog release so utterly puzzling.
Just to be clear we are talking about Paradise Lost correct? :P (I guess since it is over 2 years old and RWS likes to do deep discounts [probably because "Whoa, 90% off?! That's a huge percentage!" marketing], that makes sense.)

Possibly, we will see. Depends if they still want to communicate with GOG about that possible bug that they can't (or don't want to) reproduce but GOG can. Maybe it was just a bad day for the RWS CEO and next week his temper has lowered again, and they check again more precisely what the GOG bug is about.

If not, I guess I won't be buying Paradise Lost. Not on GOG, and not on Steam.

Yes, Paradise Lost. I wanted to include a link to my old post from May '16 that would clarify things, but if you're old like me, you usually forget about what you wanted to write about in your forum post half way through writing it.

Thank you and liquidsnake.

BTW, for anyone who has the game here and wants the game on Steam: you can message https://twitter.com/RWSbleeter with a screenshot of the game in your GOG account and they'll message you a Steam key. Obviously this doesn't solve the issue of the games on GOG; this is just FYI.
If it's an expansion then why has it just not been released as one that you can download from their website like it was done before with gaming.

Despite having a STEAM account, I'm more off a GoG loyalist so I'd rather not get the STEAM key since like you said, it would not solve the issue with the GOG version

Fucks sake...

Any one of you own the game on Steam? It's supposedly DRM-free, so kindly download it (and the DLC) and send that shit to gog HQ. Because RWS is apparently too dumb/lazy/incompetent/... to do this themselves.

It simply amazes me... 3 years to get an expansion here. How is that possible? How ridiculously stupid do the people involved in this debacle have to be?

it has nothing to do with dumb/lazy/incompetent. GoG and RWS have had a falling out, and refuse to work together anymore. The fault here is on both parts, and lack of clear communication. Bottom line is that RWS refuse to work with gOg and gOg refuse to do something about it.
