That has been happening to me since yesterday. It's actually an old bug/behaviour usually happening when there's a lot going on on the forums.

I like the purple dot, its less in your face look at me now. I dont use sound for notifications. Dont see why they cant make it customizable for everyone, on / off, whatever.

Damn it, stop giving me a reason to +1 you. I got the purple dot beside the Community header but when I click on the Forums Replies, it just gives me a long list of forums threads I've posted in and no mention on which ones have new responses.

For me also - today it does not appear to be working.

I have a purple dot to the left of Community in the menu along the top as well as one by Forum Replies under the drop down menu.

edit: I wish there was a Clear All option like there is under the bell.

On this one (your reply) it did trigger the purple dot. Earlier it was not triggered. On again, off again - or maybe it checks only every half hour or so?

Agreed, a Clear All would be great.
