As a kid I liked the series well enough and I even did not the later movie based on it was bad, not that I ever want to see it again.

As an older "more sophisticated" adult (okay, even it I'm 54, adult might be stretching it) I want to give it a chance on one condition only: The Dr. Smith character is either absent or killed/jailed/marooned in the first episode and is not permitted to interact with the young impressionable members of the family in every episode.

I do not think I will currently like a series based on the adventure of a family lost in space but that is based on my current personal preferences in fictional work, I do however find, from time to time, fictional works that I find pleasing even if hate the description.

Did they seriously remake this, too? Don't they know these remakes don't sell as well as the originals, and also upset the original fanbase due to disloyalty to the originals?

They've swapped aspects of the Characters.
Such as Don West is a mechanic not a soldier, John Robinson the Father takes that military role.

Dr Smith is played by a woman, and done very well in my opinion. She's obviously watched the original and the interplay with her and Will echoes the original well.

The biggest difference is an extended cast, there are other Jupiters and families, so expect more human drama than the original.

I might have known. I was looking forward to the series, but this sounds awful.

To be fair I'll probably end up watching it anyway, it's just that I'll wait until the series is completed/canceled, and not binge on each season as they get released.

It sure as hell is better than the movie, but that' wasn't difficult to do.

I don't get why some people get hung up on remakes not being exactly like the originals. If they only gave it a modern dress make-over there wouldn't be much point in remaking it. I rather see something new than the exact same thing again.

I think Dr. Smith is actually the best character of the show, despite her being a manipulative ****. It's one of the few times where I actually enjoyed hating on the antagonist.

I never saw the original. I'm loving this version.just on episode 2.

I didn't notice any swearing in the episode, so I let my kids watch the 2nd episode with me. It became decidedly less family-friendly. Netflix is good at that.

Watched it, loved it. However, I do feel Dr. Smith was superfluous in this.

I only ever saw the movie, and to be honest I don't know why it's so hated. I remember thinking it's ok, nothing great but fun. I liked the time travel thing and thought Oldman's Smith was a supremly creepy villain. But then again I was only a kid when I saw it and I barely remember it now.

Anyway, I'm not interested in the Netflix show. Pretty much every show of their's I tried bored the shit out of me, and the trailers for this felt so bland they made the 1998 movie look like Star Wars in comparison.

But that's how the character is supposed to be. It's like the new star trek: the original was cheesy, and that's largely where the charm came from. Sure, it wasn't as charming way back when, but was also original at that time.

Take the crappy interview aside, you see some classic clips that show you what it was all about.
The movie was hated because it was not what the show was about, and they changed the characters so significantly. A major part of the show was the family theme, the forgiveness (of smith), exploring human weakness (usually through smith), the constant Spock vs McCoy type badgering (between smith and the robot), and the ability of the family (and smith) to come together and look out for each other, despite the internal conflicts.

EDIT: TO clarify, it's like all the transformers remakes. Sure, the original stories were crap, but they became something of their own, with their own lore, loyalty, and fanbase. It keeps getting disrespected.

Well, considering that I thought the OG series was campy crap and the movie a bundle of problems, this is already sounding like an upward turn.
