dtgreene: There are situations where it makes sense to run a game in a virtual machine. I can think of two examples off hand:
1. I used one for Exile: Escape From the Pit, which is so old it won't run in modern Windows, but could run in Wine.
2. I believe the TAS of nethack was done using KVM.

_Auster_: Kinda of a very specific situation, but if you want to test the presence of drm on Steam games (there's even a thread for that here in the forums), but both systems you're using already have Steam installed and you don't want Steam tempering the results, using a virtual machine that never had Steam installed could help.
Of course, this won't happen if the game delays its DRM check until *after* the graphics has been initialized (meaning that an error in graphics initialization will appear even if the DRM check would fail).

(Not aware of any game that does this, however, except maybe those where the copy protection doesn't block the game from running, but instead changes it in some way that makes it annoying or impossible to actually play.)

CD-ROM version of some games used to do this: without the original CD-ROM in the drive, you could only play multiplayer modes. The single player modes would be locked until you insert the game CD-ROM in the drive.

Sachys: Still, you can always try USB live boots of a few distros to think on for the future should the firewall you want eventually appear?
(also handy should everything else go to hell with your pc).
If it hasn't after all this time, don't see the chances of it happening in a sufficiently near future for anything tested now to be relevant :/ Especially when such firewalls have become harder to find on Windows as well. Used to be the standard second tier of any decent security suite, but for the past several years some have dropped that tier 2 altogether, just having a plain antivirus for home users and maybe then skipping straight to a high-end enterprise solution next, others just work with the Windows Firewall, claiming to "harden" it and/or maybe offer a friendlier GUI to configure it, and those that still include their own tend to make it increasingly harder for the user to control it and get prompts, deciding what to allow and what to block on their own unless you go through hoops, or even removing even those hoops altogether. Blah.

timppu: At least when I opened a ticket towards GOG for Two World Epic Edition not working in Linux Mint 19.x (which is based on Ubuntu 18.04.x ie. Bionic Beaver, as far as I know), they outright said that my Linux version is not among the supported Linux releases.
Do you know what Linux releases does GOG support? That might help people who are trying to choose a distribution.

Each game has it listed but they tend to be Ubuntu 14.04 to 20.04.

I personally stick to LTS releases of Ubuntu derivatives like Ubuntu Mate. Currently, I'm on Ubuntu Mate 20.04 across all of my desktops and laptops and all of my games from GOG which are Linux based (98% of my collection) work without issue.

timppu: While Mint is an Ubuntu-derivative, I am not certain GOG supports Mint.

gogtrial34987: There was a time in which Mint was explicitly mentioned on some game pages. You can still see a vestige of this, in that searching all games, filtered on OS, the URL will contain system=lin_mint,lin_ubuntu. But yes, it appears that support currently only exists for Ubuntu itself.
I'm 99% sure a Blue specifically wrote not long ago that GOG offcially supports all Ubuntu derivatives, not just Mint. Let me see if I can find it.

EDIT:
Here it is. It's even bolded. "not long ago" turned out to be 3 years. Time flies. So not sure how much this is still applicable.

It's a good time to mention that alongside Ubuntu we also officially support all its flavors and derivatives like Xubuntu, Linux Mint, elementaryOS and others. That's good to know when it comes to our technical support and refund policy,

Officially, some LTS releases of Ubuntu. Not the same for all games.
Actually? Well, better not to count on any support on this front.

I’m 99% sure that this post from someone who does not even work for GOG any longer, on a forum that even GOG forgot about a long time ago, is no more binding than our own posts here ;)

Yeah, that's a bingo:

Yeah, I’m quite sure if I try again tomorrow it will be able find data for the given user ;P

Thanks!
Because of this thread, i ended up checking out KDE Neon (with the latest plasma desktop.

Really enjoying it, specially since i haven't used a KDE desktop for some time.

temps: What does this end up meaning for the player though? Is there any serious problem for them if they have an RTX 3070 and want to try using Linux? Will it simply not work?
avatar
patrikc: As long as one is willing to use proprietary drivers, there shouldn't be any issue. You can do as you please, in this case install the drivers if needed. However, some distros come bundled with the necessary drivers, such as Pop OS or Manjaro, so everything should work from the get go, without taking any extra steps.
Even if you need to install the Nvidia drivers (say you want to use another distribution that does not offer them by default), the process is straightforward, nothing out of the ordinary.
Great... I think I'll try either Linux Mint or Ubuntu in a few days, because I'm finding a surprisingly large number of my games already support Linux. I have a few Windows-only games I picked up in the recent sale I want to play first.

Although I'm sad to see GOG Galaxy doesn't have a Linux version because I've come to like this launcher.

Dual boot. I'm dual booting with an offline version of Windows 7 where I play my Windows-only games.

That would seem like a decent option, but with Windows 10 (if that is the case) you never know. The updates are still a hazard, I doubt that will change for the good in the future. Some users were complaining about updates breaking the dual boot.
Especially now, given a major (heh) update is on the way. *sigh*
