And aren't all the "content" DLC free? Basically the game is "complete" and only paid DLC's are Soundtracks?
It can be hard and frustating on some bosses but not in a bad way, it is quite satisfactory to beat the hard sections.

Kelefane: And aren't all the "content" DLC free?
Yes. The developer is working on the sequel, Silksong.

As to the question - I found it fun, though I have yet to finish it entirely. It can be kinda punishing, which is frustrating to get accustomed to at first given how simple it seems overall. But it's not a "spend most of the time angry and not enjoying the game" kind of title, if that makes sense.

It's also well made. Not that it sets a high bar by indie game standards or anything, but there are games that could take notes from it in terms of control, sound and animation overall. Often I just kind of find myself marveling at its art style on a hub screen and taking in the music and then realize 5 minutes or more has sailed by and I haven't actually accomplished anything in the game. Happens very rarely, in my case at least, so I consider it high praise.
Yes. Play if you like..
- Exploration. Non-linear exploration.
- Power-up to further increase exploration. AKA Metroidvania
- Hard, but fair bosses. For the most part.
- Optional lore, tons of it.
- Medium/hard platforming sections. Tight platforming.
- Sick music.
- Sick atmosphere.
- Optional content like extra upgrades and bosses.
- Different builds, although I hate the term build in games because it kind of implies min-maxing stuff. Basically you can be melee heavy or spell heavy.

I put in around 30 hours to beat the game with pretty much everything found. All I'm missing is one gauntlet of enemies as well as pretty much the whole of Godmaster DLC. Side note, I had put in around 20 hours a couple of years ago, but put it down for whatever reason. It was just as amazing the second round through.

One con that I can think of, that might go for any other Metroidvania anyway, is the extra traversing you'll do. Not exploration nor backtracking really, it's just some places you'll need to go are very out of the way.

All in all amazing game if you like this sort of stuff.
VERY!!! But beware, it is absolutely mandatory for you to GIT GUD! Or else, various hazards may happen, like you breaking your screen, smashing your keyboard, hurling and throwing your mouse away, etc. Or bashing the controller against the wall. You need reflexes and precision, on that one.

I myself was urged and motivated to upgrade my platforming capabilities, with this gem. But when i reached impossible challenges (Nightmare King, white palace secret passage, final colosseum level and almost the entirety of the final DLC content (god-something), i was forced to use the INVULNERABILITY MOD. I merely wanted to 100% the game and collect all entries, or else by myself, i did a damn fine job, with 106% beaten legit, out of the 112.

Get it. Worth every penny. I got through special discount in mail, for 6-7 bucks. Mighty example of how kickstarter stretch-goals should be handled, too. Devs implemented even the first one of those who didn't make it to be funded and the secondary player, turned into an entire game, in and by iteself, instead of a small content addition!
Yes, it’s a good game. I found having to find the map a bit annoying. And some bits are painfully hard. But control is tight, graphic style is appealing, and if you like metroid type games it’s one of the best.
I've tried to play it, but the game is more demanding on the computer than many other games of the genre, even at minimum settings.
* On my desktop with cooling issues, I get smooth motion at first, but then the computer overheats and throttles, resulting in lag that makes the game unplayable.
* On my laptop with a Celeron CPU, the game is playable, though not exactly smooth. Unfortunately, it's not as comfortable to play on a laptop because it's too big to be comfortable as a hand-held and too small to play it like a console or desktop.

As a result of this, I have not yet been able to fully enjoy the game, but I have at least enjoyed the soundtrack, which is definitely worth it.

From what little I have played of Hollow Knight, my main issue is the way saving and death is handled; the game only has auto-saves, and when you die, the game punishes you for it and saves the punishment.

(Note that this desktop can run games like Timespinner and Celeste without issue.)

Have you tried any of the dedicated precision platformers, like Super Meat Boy or Celeste? Playing those games will definitely help you with your platforming skills. (I could also note that Celese even has an invunerability mod built in.)

Then again, I figure that Hollow Knight and Celeste aren't games you're interested for the reason that you rejected my suggestion of Timespinner.

Hmmmmm... I also beaten thoroughly and without cheating, the Messenger! Another great title to urge you "Git Gud" and keep you motivated to polish & hone your platforming skills! And now, i try my luck in Dead cells, even though its platforming aspect's challenge is minimal (bosses seem to be the stinkers, as well as choosing the right gear for the right stage/enemy).

Celeste was twice offered for free on Epic, but alas, i missed it... And i was severely disappointed that GOG dropped the ball on that one, even though they advertized it shortly. Want to grab it, but i need to get lucky with epic giveaways, or GOG firing the canceration (curation) department. Both of those odds though, seem to be of tough luck.

Timespinner is woke and i wouldn't play it, even if they paid me to. Stil though, thanks for suggestions! Glad to be a forum buddy of yours, anytime!
Define "fun". Like "ha ha"-fun, or "I'm fucking crazy"-fun.

The game was mentioned on this YT video, if that helps. It is the game a non-gamer (WUMAN!) wanted to play, figure that. You know, "the one with the little cute ghost guy"?

I´ll add a nice game for any newcomer to the modern metroidvania style of games: Ori and the Blind Forest.
Is not very hard but some sections need to be repeated several times to get right. On my first playthrough I ended with 300+ deaths, second around 30. Deaths are not severaly punished if saved often.
It has a nice Disney-like story that never gets in the way of gameplay.
Some say it's better than Hollow Knight, I have yet to finish HK but Ori is one of my favorite games.

I could say that Hollow Knight is similarly woke, so you shouldn't play that game either!

It’s horrifyingly hard. After the graphics slowdowns were fixed, if a lot got through to a tree, where you to keep jumping in portals blindly to progress upwards with instadeath for each mis-position. Got to the top of that tree and gave up. Was just fun. Graphically other than the slowdowns, it looked great though.

I didnt have slowdowns. Every dexterity game is hard with not good refresh rates.
Was that the water tree , yeah thats probably the hardest part. I found other games way harder than this.

Woke like how? Cause if that's the case I won't touch it. I hate companies pushing their false agendas into my games nonstop.

Yes, it’s a well known issue with ori and some hardware. Every few seconds everything slows down for a second. I believe I had to change some graphic card options to get rid of it, but it was a real pain and put me off the game for a long time. When I had it fixed, it was the tree with a load of petals and spikes. Really didn’t get on with that. Shame as it is a very nice looking game.
