speakk: I feel like GOG has been going downhill in the aspects that brought be to GOG and kept me engaged here:

- DRM free? You can certainly download games without a client (still, even though god damn those clients are being pushed hard), but there is no guarantee that the game is actually DRM free anymore. You always have to go read through the comments to find out if the game actually implements a DRM scheme or not, GOG often will not tell you.

- Update notifications? An awesome feature that literally kept me coming back every day. Well, after silently dropping them as a feature, indeed without letting anyone know, I found the huge community updated thread with new updates listed. The community is now responsible for doing the job of the platform. I can't even sort my library by last updated to be able to look up the changelogs myself.

- The client? At its current state the client is something I can ignore, but considering the slippery slope of more DRM games coming into GOG, I wouldn't be surprised if more and more functionality was moved onto the client. And no, I don't want a linux version of the client either, I can already type 'cd ~/games ; ls' and be done with it, or dl a game installer from the site.

- All platforms equal? Now this one is not black and white because I certainly don't have any hard data on this, but it certainly _feels_ like more and more Windows-only games are coming to this place. However, I won't put the blame of this completely on GOG, it's just something that has made me sad. Feel free to ignore this particular point if you wish. And btw I too have enjoyed some of the Windows games here via Wine, so I'm certainly not completely against it anyway.

All in all, GOG used to be a place I would, without reservations, recommend for everyone, telling them this is the only way not to let DRM become the only thing people know. Nowadays though, I'm starting to hope a viable alternative might pop up, because I'm certainly losing hope with GOG itself.

I've come here to voice my complaint on how poorly GoG has been handling standalone installer game updates. No notfications? Games not actually updating to the new version right away?

No - this will not stand GoG. THIS SHALL NOT STAND THE TEST OF TIME!!!

So what should gog change to remain competitive?
I think it should have mod database , soon even Epic store will have it.

OP, so you are going to give up on GOG and go where, exactly?

There are no viable alternatives to GOG.

The couple of other DRM-free stores that exist do not offer games that are of the same quality as GOG does.

So if you do like your OP suggests and "give up on GOG," you'd have to either give up on games entirely, or else go to a DRM-infested store (but I accept your point that many GOG games are also DRM-infested for their multiplayer aspects, so contrary to what many posts in this thread say, no, GOG is not truly 100% "DRM-free").

GOG needs to spend the time and resources to make Crossplay multiplayer be a viable thing on the GOG platform, that close to 100% of its multiplayer games are able to use.

In fact, doing that would have been a much better use of GOG's resources than was wasting all that time & money on Galaxy 2.0, which is terrible, and which doesn't even attempt to fix any of GOG's problems regarding multiplayer being totally unviable on GOG.

P8j6: DRM free is, if I can get the game and be sure to be able to play the MULTI PLAYER 50 years later even if the internet would suddenly cease to exist. I just connect two old PC's through ethernet or serial cable and im ready to some multiplayer fun.
Is that your definition of DRM?

It seems to be incongruous with https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_management.

LAN play is not supported by all games.

Also, back in 1996, if I wanted to play Quake multiplayer, I had to connect to my ISP's Quake servers. They had nothing to do with id Software, and I can safely assume that id Software wasn't even aware of my ISP's existence. Do you think that was DRM?

blotunga: I'm with timppu here. I think as long as I can easily use a script to back up my entire collection and can play any single player campaign without needing a connection/client, I'm all good with GOG.
It's been a while since I've backed up my collection, and I wasn't as organized as this. I've dabbled in using some command line stuff with youtube-DL to download streaming stuff I wanted to back up (and using a text-replacer application to automate the command to ##ytv so I don't have to type the whole code each time), but I'm new to scripting.

Do you know where I can learn to write a script to do all that, and have the downloads happen in the background? I'm on Windows 10, if it makes a difference.

Fwiw, I think the OP was more civil than some similar threads in the past, and not too dramatic.

(The crappier side of some sites like chan sites and social media...now that's worthy of being called dramatic, imo)

Also this forum is a near ghost town(most of the active threads are just the same ones...forum games, sales, releases, GOG editorials, etc....some are good, but I think doing just that here in GD all the time gets a bit stale if that's all that's here).....imo we should be encouraging the quality(subjective) threads that pop up when we can, by discussing the topic within them(if one wants) &(if an OP is new to the site & a decent sort) trying to encourage them to stick around and interact with the community more).

But of course that's just my opinion....to each their own.

Some(whether right or wrong) DRM as slightly different....as you likely know, some also see cd keys and code wheels/etc as DRM or DRM precursors.

I imagine that it would be possible to have users distribute the server load somehow for downloading the game files. That'd have it's own technical hurdles, but on the surface, at least, it sounds like it'd be a good way to have the users easily create/maintain their collection of game files as well as help new users download new stuff.

Other than that, the biggest, simplest thing would probably be allowing the users to get the update notifications, and let them sort their libraries by "most recently updated", like they did before. I have no idea why they would remove that feature.

You could have scrolled past this thread if you didn't like it. Why did you come in to it just to tell people to stop talking? This choice of yours confuses me, since all you seem to be doing is contributing to the "people talking about a subject that others don't think is worthwhile" problem you seem to be complaining about.

He did. It's whether you need to depend on some kind of external party to access features of the product you've purchased. I think it's a reasonable definition, and find that it's one of the preferences that GoG explicitly catered to when it was establishing itself.

I absolutely think there's an argument to be made that GOG sells games with "DRM'd multiplayer." I think it's either that or nothing in most cases, since multiplayer relies so much on clients nowadays, but maybe GOG should be more clear on that.

However I also think people are being silly when they think this means anything in regards to singleplayer.

Gog is decently clear on what requires Galaxy to play Multiplayer... its always written very clearly on who you can connect with, whats cross play, and if you need galaxy or if its an option.

Look under the system requirements at the bottom of any game page. See example attached below:

You can use gogrepo. Windows 10 has Linux support now so you can install bash and python3 directly there. I recommend using Kalanyr's version, and the best is the dev branch if you have OCD like me. The dev branch lets you skip stuff you don't want like patches or 32 bit versions.
