I agree, but in this case the game in question was not looking for personal info to send to the developers. It was just trying to dial out in general.

Then those developers ought to RTFM and ensure their product does precisely what they want it to do, and nothing else. Otherwise one might legitamately ask what other features they are missing …

There are sadly a few here who seem to think EVERYTHING that stops them from gaming as they like is DRM.

They are usually crunched for time, using cheap/less fully featured versions of engines/build kits, and other issues which lead to such things happening. They do as best they can while trying to keep their jobs and stay under budget in some cases.

Unless you are rich enough to have your own factories/etc to make your own products or have stuff custom made you will ALWAYS have to make some sort of compromise(amount spent if sales don't dip low enough, locations to buy from if the item is physical and not made/held by many people, quality of item if physical and used, etc for starters)....this is just how life is.

In such cases one has to either buy said product with as little compromise made as possible or not partake and live with that.

I don't have those because the flaw is a human one, if you have gotten infected the only person to blame is yourself, and the fact is since everything is playing catch up, it could quite easily be too late.

A firewall and a decent browser (with decent addons/settings) is basically a requirement, everything else is not.

Yes but as you said we are only human and you could get a virus and need such a scanner later on and not have one.

This isn't about forgetting, or being a little bit lazy, at that point i was an idiot and would accept it as such, still a human flaw, but not one i'm going to make without already having a backup plan in place.

The only times your need virus scanners is if you search and download porn, movies, games and whatever other dodgy crap you can find.

Viruses need to be executed, downloading that doesn't automatically execute said code, so you can upload the file to an online virus scanner and check if it is a virus or not, but when you have your PC open to the world with no firewall of any kind, at which point why bother?

What about malicious ads, hijacked sites and malware tagging along in otherwise legitimate files sent by people you know who aren't aware they're infected?

Yes, thats why i said browser (decent) with decent settings and addons, aswell as a firewall. Besides those would be dodgy sites, i don't go to such sites anymore, i earn a wage and i'm too lazy to find cracks and keys these days.




And my backup plan is, format. If i were to do such a thing i'd be ready to format the whole PC.



I've been working on PC's most of my life, so i know the do's and don'ts, people tend to either do too little or too much. But they are unwilling to learn so i don't care, whatever happens is usually their own fault.

Quick fix for you. Delete the Galaxy files! :P

Seriously, I just tested it with Train Valley (another Unity game) and the game still works. I deleted Galaxy64.dll and GalaxyCSharpGlue.dll, located in the Plugins folder and game's root. Other games might have Galaxy.dll, GalaxyCSharp.dll and GalaxyPeer.dll. See if that works for you while removing that localhost firewall rule.

If you still have the older, good versions of your game(s), compare the checksums of those Galaxy .DLLs between the old and new version of the game. If they are not the same, then use the old .DLLs on the new version and see if it's fixed (without the localhost firewall rule). It would be good if you also open a support ticket and tell them your findings, so they might actually fix these broken .DLLs.

I'll give it a try tomorrow, though i don't have the old ones, i generally leave auto-update on.

Oh, you're using Galaxy. Then it might not work in that case, at least not if you want to play it with Galaxy's functions.

As others said some legit sites have viruses/etc on them when they get hijacked. Also you honestly would format instead of running a virus scanner for around 15 minutes and solving it that way? Seems a bit overkill to me.

Most people who buy DRM-Free games specifically for offline use care about outcomes rather than linguistical nitpicking. Eg, a DRM-Free game by definition should work 100% offline. That's the expectation of buyers on DRM-Free stores that present and market games as such and in fact is their entire point of DRM-Free existing. If a game refuses to start if it can't "phone home", then "it's not DRM because the server is a Telemetry one and not an authentication one" rings incredibly hollow when it acts and fails to start for exactly the same reason - the game won't give you "permission" to play it unless you jump through hoops involving some compulsory "check-in" with an online server you don't want or need (the exact functional definition of modern DRM). Personally I'd rather see such issues fixed than ignored on the back of "distraction arguing" or "anti complainer complaining" that always ends up one-level removed from the core issue at hand (and never actually helps anyone with offline functionality issues...)

If a single-player offline game needs to be let through a firewall to chatter away on the net or refuses to start, then it doesn't "fix" the problem. You're simply ignoring it, lowering your own personal standards of how offline games should behave on a DRM-Free store and demanding others join in or you'll label them "irrational". Again, that's not a solution focussed mindset that actually solves the issue, helps others experiencing it, helps future game developers avoid having similar reoccurring issues or helps GOG avoid future support calls in needing to talk non-tech savvy people through adding manual firewall exceptions.

^ You're getting distracted. It simply does not matter what anti-malware, etc, stuff he runs, what his backup strategy is. He does not need to defend or justify anything in order for his original complaint to remain valid. The bottom line is if it's sold for offline use it should work 100% offline and not even "touch" a firewall. Period. Again, I'd simply like this fixed for everyone. But the first step in fixing any problem is not ignoring it, talking around it or "shooting the messenger".

Test them first by renaming them (eg, Galaxy64.dll.renamed) rather than delete them. Many games start with them deleted but I also know some others (eg, Divinity Original Sin, This War of Mine, etc) will refuse to start if you delete Galaxy files ("This program can't start because Galaxy64.dll is missing from your computer"), even for offline installers. If you delete them you'll have to reinstall the whole game whereas you can always just rename them back.

Also, for some Unity Engine games you'll often find those Galaxy related files in the root game install folder duplicated under \Data\Managed and \Data\Plugins, so there may be 2-3 copies of the same files that need renaming / deleting. Best of luck and I'd like to know how you get on as I run a "whitelisted firewall" (block by default, allow only by exception) and am interested in staying on top of this stuff if it's something that's going to be an issue in future games.
