I do not like GoG Galaxy
Its seems buggy

At the moment it thinks my witcher 3 game is not installed at all
And if I press play it tries to download the entire game again

But I thought I had to use it to get the updates and DLC etc?

Can i get those direct from witcher 3 website?

hunvagy: Problem is, i just had Galaxy on the computer. I did not install Wild Hunt through Galaxy, I downloaded the installation files via GOG Downloader. I can't understand why they put the Galaxy.dll into that version, that is supposed to work as a standalone, without any interference from the client. Or if they did put it in, at least make sure it doesn't cause an Access Violation on launch night when people patch up the game to its final version.

Matruchus: That is a very bad bug. Galaxy.dll has no place in the standalone galaxy independent gog installer.
It's not just The Witcher 3. I downloaded Galaxy, installed Age of Wonders, removed Galaxy (as it is rubbish) and Galaxy.dll is still in my Age of Wonders folder. I would not have known to check if it was not for this thread. Am going to test out a standalone installer and see if it is there.

Edit: So I don't have Galaxy on my computer. I re-downloaded Age of Wonders and installed it, and lo and behold Galaxy.dll is in the folder. Date of file modified shows as 6/9/2010. I see GOG has invented time travel as well as installing a potential form of DRM on standalone installers. GG GOG :(

Edit 2: and after searching my registry after uninstalling Galaxy, "C:\Program Files (x86)\GalaxyClient\GalaxyClient.exe" still exists.

Edit 3: 63.8mb of files under ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy remained after uninstalling. The Galaxy.dll is hopefully confined to Age of Wonders. Strangely the Galaxy.dll is also on my Steam version of the game. Even more strangely is the Steam_api.dll file being on my GOG Aarklash installation, especially given I don't have the game on Steam.

You may download it directly from your library. All of that without using Galaxy.

Cool so I might just uninstall GoG galaxy client then
Does the witcher game notify you if there is an update though or you must manually do it yourself and check for updates?
Seventeen pages of are you or arn't you using Galaxy. Pointless much.

You have to manually check the website unfortunately.

Lets make it 18 pages of uninteresting drivel. :D

*Edit, I'm just being a jerk again.

Continue Gog'ers.

F4LL0UT: Are you sure that it didn't just use your Windows user name or something?
avatar
Wurzelkraft: The name was gone as soon as Galaxy was uninstalled. I also don't use my GOG username on my Windows account.

Obviously this game has a galaxy.dll whether you actually use GOG Galaxy or not.... But why would the game then hook itself into Galaxy (or rather its saved [local] files because it wasn't running at the same time) and get my username just to display it in the menu? It serves no purpose and I think this is just one of the many "optional" and "as requested by many users though there is no wishlist entry or any other proof for this statement" features we will see in the near future. :)
I think that this is done the following way.

If your game has the galaxy.dll when it is started it tries to communicate with the services that are running in the background and through these services the galaxy DRM client is started and your game is added to Galaxy. You should check, even after uninstall of Galaxy if the services are still found under services and remove them manually. Knowing how gog deals with things, I would not wonder if the services are left untouched.
I've installed it but I've not really had cause to 'use' it yet because I haven't decided to play a new game from my GOG library yet, with the amount of Steam (+ Misc. DD site) , physical media and freeware games in my backlog I probably only have something like a 1 in 10 chance of randomly choosing something from my GOG library whenever I finish a game of a given genre and finishing a game is averaging at less than one a month at the moment...

I tried assigning tags, it's a cool idea that I like but the interface is a bit fiddly at the moment - I don't want to struggle though it only for it to be improved after I finish!
I installed it because I thought that would be the only way to download games (other than manually via browser). Then I found that you can still find GOG Downloader links, so I haven't actually used Galaxy for anything. I'll probably be uninstalling it.

They are still listed in the services menu although the files itself are already gone. They are also set to only start "manually". IIRC there were some leftover files in the ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy folder I had to delete myself but I can't remember if any of the important service files were still in there. If they weren't deleted....well THAT is an issue.

If you had to the client would not be optional anymore. The alternative that GOG kind of guarantees is the download from the website.
I am not using it, really do not see the point to be honest.

Going to uninstall it.

I was testing it in the closed alpha, but now that it's in open beta, I'm pretty much done with it. It doesn't seem to offer me much other than making downloads twice as big as using the downloader. I might use it some more later, if there's some killer use case.
