jamyskis: While the console GPUs are technically on a level between the HD 7850 & 7870, the reality is that to achieve any noteworthy gains over the current generation of consoles, you need at least a GTX 970, which alone costs the same as a new console.
What's your idea of "noteworthy gains"? I recently bought a PC copy of Dark Souls 3, and it runs smoothly at max settings, while the PS4 version ( and Xbone version, no doubt ) are apparently quite choppy. Witcher 3 also runs at higher settings and framerates than the console versions, and I "only" own a GTX 960. So I'm actually very happy with my choice to stick with the PC for those games ( and most of my gaming these days ), despite only owning a fairly average system.

It's not like the consoles have practical advantages over PCs anymore -- in most cases you have to install the game and download patches either way. And at least on PC you still have a reasonable amount of control over the hard- and software you use, and how you use it.

The Wiis advantage were it's special controllers as default.

Why would you say that? Is it because Nox never came out on a console? ^_^

Tarm: How many of those games are exclusive to Japan? I have a feeling many PS4 games get stuck there. :(
On PS4 - 6. But that's only because an English localisation has yet to be announced for most of those titles. I'd expect that to drop to 3 before the end of the year (not counting anything I'd buy later). Only 1 of those titles is confirmed to not be getting a western release - a result of how the western press were (correctly) expected to bitch about it.

Most games getting "stuck" in Japan is a myth these days. It's actually the other way round. Most games are stuck ROW depending on the format. And several of my PS4 games are imports because they were never made available in Japan on the format. Such as Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth. That only had a Vita release here.

You may wait longer for some Japanese games to release ROW, but at the end of the day, ROW actually has better access to Japanese games than Japan does (taking into account system choice, base pricing, and DLC pricing).

Does being disappointed in their very existence count? If so, yeah, I'm disappointed in the latest console generation :).

To be fair, it's partly the fault of the PC market: fragmentation by graphic cards and sometimes different versions of the same OS not to mention not being plug&play enough for the ultra specialized consumers.

I already hate the segmentation of software by OSes, so don't even get me started on segmentation by proprietary hardware.

That's very interesting. As I've said I'm a console noob so I'm trying to learn how this stuff works. :)

Then it might be as simple as I don't like the bulk of the console games getting released. So far the only games I've had really fun with are Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, Gauntlet: Slayer Edition, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round and Rebel Galaxy.
Games that started out promising but after a while turned out to have too many irritating features and stuff to get me to stick with them are Dragon Age: Inquisition, Grand Ages: Medieval and Elder Scrolls Online.
I've tried more games but those didn't even last a couple hours.
I guess you don't go console in just a couple years. *shrug*

I think the word you're looking for is "gimmick". But I'd have to agree that, if any of the major console players is still on the right course, it'd be Nintendo. Well, right course may be an exaggeration, but I mean at least they still tend to focus on gameplay and accessibility, instead of sheer hardware power and all the latest mainstream AAA trends. Here's hoping they'll be able to set things right with their latest console project -- although, I'd much prefer they'd focus on saving their current console instead. I wonder who is going to buy their next one, after the disappointing software line-up ( 1st and 3rd party ) for the WiiU. They're pretty much forced to release some major exclusives during the launch period of their new console. I doubt another experimental hardware gimmick will be enough, this time around.
As someone who bought a PS3 for a couple of games (which then became a small generation defining collection of about 20 games) when the PS4 was already out, you can say I'm disappointed. I was disappointed with 7th gen too (except the Wii but did not have enough games for me so never bought it) until I needed a new DVD/Blu-Ray player and decided to get the PS3 to play some classics from PS2 in HD and the few PS3 exclusives I was curious about. LOVED the console and the games. PS4 so far has the following games I'm interested in: The Last Guardian (not released), Uncharted 4 (not released), and almost my entire PS3 collection (except for Catherine, Metal Gear Legacy, and Tomb Raider Trilogy and Ico & Shadow of the Colossus)... so losing about 10 games just for 2 new ones...

I do believe the new console was needed because the 7th gen was overstaying... but 8th gen should have less RAM and more everything else. Is like these consoles are small PCs and focus on "social" like sharing gameplay and stuff... Man, I miss "plug & play" and this is coming from someone who grew up with a NES and a PC... and never had a SNES, PSone/2 or N64 or anything at all but a NES and a PC.

Right now I'm rocking my little New 3DS XL and it seems this will be my only 8th gen console so far... Excited about the Nintendo NX though :)

PS: Wii U is interesting but I'm leaving "fixed to place" gaming behind and focusing on laptop and handhelds from now on (once I finish my PS3 backlog that is...)
My PC is too cheap to run Witcher 3 well (but after this last upgrade I think it'll actually run it). So W3 and the upcoming CDPR Sci-Fi game, Battlefront (to play with my bro) and the upcoming Zelda game are the only games I can think of to buy a new console.

The consoles themselves are great. They have new features that are a good step in the right direction. And VR/Augmented Reality may or may not change some things. But so far, no sale from me. I'm still playing Battlefield Bad Company 2 with my bro on my XBOX360, and I have more than enough spectacular games on PC on 360 that I think I'll probably end up skipping this generation.

That said, I'm cheap and I tend to buy consoles only after they're dirt cheap. My gaming dollars usually go to PC b/c I think I get a lot more bang for my buck.

I think I'm most excited to see what Nintendo comes up with. I have small kids, and Nintendo puts out some stellar games. My bro has a WiiU and when company comes over, we don't usually get out the XBOX ONE or 360. We get out the WiiU. It has some party games that are some of the most fun I've ever had playing games. I think they did a good job with it, but it's great for party games and not a whole lot else. When the kids go to bed, the ONE comes out and we blast things in traditional style.

If Nintendo can offer a good-priced both-and machine, it could work out for them. But I sort of doubt that will happen. I see more toy-centric gaming machines. And I'm OK with that. I just hope they make some money with it.

It all depends on the type of games you like. I only have around 16 games on PS4 that would class as "western" games. Such as the Uncharted collection, or Assassin's Creed Syndicate. The majority of the games I have are inherently "Japanese" games, i.e., Neptunia V-II, Exist Archive, Gal Gun.

Same is true of my Vita, PSP, PS3, Wii U, and (3)DS collections. The XB1 collection is more "western" games, I only have 5 Japanese games on the system, but that's to be expected, given how MS have (yet again) failed to market their system to the Japanese. A bit of a shame though, as it's actually not bad as systems go. At least importing (digitally) for it is easy.

Which makes it all the sillier that Bandai Namco happily support the 60,000 odd XB1 owners here (it's actually less than that given the likelihood of systems being sold back to stores), but still refuse to sell to over 2 million PC (Steam) users in Japan -- a number that is likely to be higher than that reported by Steam Spy, given how privacy is a big thing here.
To everyone saying the Wii U doesn't have enough good* games, behold:

Bayonetta 2, Captain Toad, Fatal Frame, Game & Wario, Hyrule Warriors, Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, NES Remix 1 & 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Nintendo Land, Pikmin 3, Pokkén Tournament, Splatoon, Star Fox Zero, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Wonderful 101, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and Yoshi's Wooly World.

That is 24 solid exclusive titles, and that isn't even counting games that are still to come such as Lost Reavers, Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE and the new Zelda game. While their third-party support is still lacking, they have really stepped up their support for indie developers this generation. We also can't ignore the Virtual Console which added GameBoy Advance, Nintendo DS and Wii titles to the already vast library of classic games.

*Note: Before you start picking apart this list, realize that "good" is a subjective term. While your opinions and sensibilities may not reflect mine, you can't deny that the games listed in this post are immensely enjoyable to others.

Eh... Debatable, for me it was about buying the game and working as intended, i didn't had to worry about having to figure out the best way to get visuals + performance acceptable, it was the definitive edition for that game, no one would have the upper hand with higher resolution and framerate in a multiplayer game.

NOW fucking Sony decided to destroy that balance by creating a superior machine at the same price that i bought my ps4 showing the middle finger to those +40M people that supported their console. Now i have to think that i'll be paying the same price for a lesser game than someone that bought the new console. Dunno, can't wait for the shitstorm, no way both PSVR and PS4K will succeed being released at the same time, we're talking about 400 (or 500 with the rest of the accessories) for PSVR and another 400 for the new console, 800/900 for both.

But back to the advantages, for a multiplayer game i still rather play it on consoles, i will be at ease because i know that that cheap death wasn't because the other person was cheating.

For the question made by the op, yes, i'm disappointed, i bougth a xbox 360 so that i could play with my friends that i've met on the previous console and it was worth it, the first years i had Blue Dragon, Ace Combat 6, Lost Odyseey, GRAW, Gears of War, etc.

Time go by and all went to shit, Don Matrick, master of fucking it up, made me regret my purchase. The first party exclusives were lacking or becoming shitty, every year it was "KINECT TV KINECT TV" on every E3, deals were terrible and so on... Meanwhile i could see the PS3 with FREE multiplayer, you would pay for a renting service that for less than €5 you could get acess to AAA titles and they had nice exclusive titles (The last of us).

Well, it was decided, my group was moving on from Microsoft to Sony, cheaper console, more powerful and they had those advantages from the previous generations (i'll get there).

Welp... So, now multiplayer is paid and the games they rent are all indie titles. Don't get me wrong, i do enjoy indie titles but i also enjoy variety, not to say that i don't like being played for a fool, when sony puts titles like Dead Star or Hardware Rivals on their ps+ service it's not because they want the game to be a sucess, no no no, it's because the game was dead before it was released and it was cheaper to make a deal with the publisher/devs. Meanwhile, on the other console, they have AAA titles and they also have games from the xbox 360 due to the BC system. Oh, not to say that the some of the indies released on the PS+ service are shitty or have bugs, i'm still waiting to play Broforce...

The PS4 exclusives... Oh lord. Killzone is one of the most mediocre games that i ever played, Infamous SS was ok but was also lacking in content, Knack is garbage (didn't bought it), The Order 1886 is garbage (didn't bought it and i could do it now for $8 but i won't), Driveclub is ok (but it was a huge mess), and so on...
I only enjoyed playing TLOU Remastered and Bloodborne, currently i'm not looking forward for their exclusive games (first party that is) or E3, they're slowly becoming what i hated about xbox 360/Microsoft, this E3 it will be VR (not interested), CoD and Destiny (i'm tired of that shit) and their shitty artistic games that always bombs in the charts and yet they keep making them.
Sure, there will be good stuff like Wild, Horizon and some other stuff but they will be minimal compared with the other stuff.

Sigh... Guess i'm getting old and tired, this will be the last generation of consoles for me, if this will be all about making new hardware 3 in 3 years then i rather buy a better pc, to be honest i don't even play fast competitive multiplayer games (ex. fps) that much and i rather play singleplayer games, hell, some of my pc backlog is waiting for a better pc (ex. Shogun 2) so i will be ok.

Playing those was one reason I chose the PS4. Turns out it's kinda hard to get Eastern (Well it is the opposite of West. :P ) games here in Sweden. Granted I haven't gone nuts looking for them but they certainly aren't marketed much here.

Friends import games all the time and juggle several accounts just to be able to play them. More than one account for anything is a recipe for disaster when it comes to me so that I avoid. :/
