DaCostaBR: I think it's just meant to play 4k movies, games would be impossible. It's Sony trying to boost their declining TV sales by pushing 4k. It's the exact same thing they did with 3D and we know how long that lasted.
Shouldn't the PS4 be capable of that anyway? I'm pretty sure my GPU could, if I had a screen to actually display 4K media on. I mean, reading and processing data from a disc, is a whole different story from actually rendering 4K game scenes in real time.

Anyhow, if it's just a "minor upgrade" to the current PS4, which doesn't have a significant impact on its gaming functionality, then it doesn't sound quite so bad. But you'd think Sony could have added that functionality right from the start. The PS3 came with a blu-ray drive as well, long before those really hit the mainstream. Seems short-sighted of Sony not to include 4K capabilities in the original version of the PS4.
Personally, I'm not disappointed at all, from a certain point of view. ;-)

It was the price that this generation of consoles were originally released at that made me return more to PC gaming, and realize that, although I had been a PC gamer for a good long while, I had inadvertently missed the rich variety of PC games by concentrating on consoles for too long.

Not saying there's anything wrong with consoles, but I don't think I'll be buying any more myself. :-)
The launch of the XBone and PS4 both made me question the sanity of users. Always online DRM on a console and no trading or playing used games. We know where MS wanted to push it, and likely Sony too (but they were wise enough to keep their mouth shut and do an impressive E3 that year).

* Games are pushing 50 Gigs (Why???)
* Games never work and need patching, so internet is required (even after patching may be broken for months and months)
* Constant OS updates
* Presence of online-only games
* Micro transactions
* 95% of the games are cross platform or present on the PC
* Price point of $400-$500 for a console
* Consoles are underpowered compared to what we were expecting
* All games must be installed
* Huge waiting periods for loading games
* Few (if any) NEW games, rather heavy re-releases from the last generation, or are safe per-established franchises.
* Most games locked at 30fps, and funky lower resolutions because they can't run at HD
* Backwards compatibility was toted as dumb and unnecessary on launch, but 2015 it's being touted not as a big feature they are going to push.

In all honesty i found a lot of good games on the PS2 and ones I'd still play today. The over emphasis of FPS games, pushing past the uncanny valley. Actually not that long ago i put in Disgaea, clearly an older title. It loaded in 2 seconds flat and was instantly ready to play. Snappy, fast, good framerate, simple gameplay, and a good story, all the good things needed. Odin Sphere is another game on the PS2 that is simple, plays well and looks gorgeous.

The entire generation in my opinion is a waste of time. 3 years and i still don't have 5 must have games for single system. In fact i just stopped caring.

Last two cents. I think a number of companies should back off the HD and 4k bandwagon and instead make games that are targeted more for older specs. Make games that target the level of quality for the PS2, and if you have extra time then you can add in higher graphical quality and other things. I don't care how awesome a game looks if it only plays at 5 frames a second and the visual quality is the only thing it has going for it.
If you mean home consoles, then I am, although to be frank, I didn't think much of the previous generation either. The Wii was good (although it ended up getting neglected later on), but the PS3 only had a handful of interesting titles and the Xbox 360 was almost completely uninteresting. However, I do think this home console generation has been even worse.

In terms of handheld consoles, however, I am a little more satisfied, though it isn't as good as the previous generation. The 3DS is alright and arguably the most compelling non-PC platform out right now, but the Vita has unfortunately not lived up to its predecessor.

Admittedly, for a primarily PC gamer, my views aren't that odd. After all, the PS4/Xbone (as well as their predecessors) are essentially simplified gaming computers; if you're already into PC gaming, chances are that they have little to offer you.

I will say that, even if I was disappointed by the Wii U, I'm still curious to see how the NX will turn out. I've been keeping track of NX news ever since the platform was announced. It'll be interesting to see if Nintendo can do better this time around.

OK, I must have mentally blocked out most of that too, but at least you saved me the effort of typing it! :-D
Nintendo + PC for me, preferably DRM-free for the latter (so basically GOG).

Nintendo releases too many great exclusives for me to not want their systems, and most 3rd party games come to PC and typically look and play better anyway.
I'm just now starting to want one due to MKX for PC no longer being a thing, and some other fighting games coming or being best represented there. The game count influencing me is pretty darn low though, and this PS4k thing really makes me wonder about how good an idea it is getting a console at all.

The Xbox 1.5 and PS4k thing is something I've been curious about as to how people feel about it. I struggle to find much of a positive in it. If the first edition was just not ever what we should have had then why should I get a base unit now? For all the people that do have a standard unit what does that mean for them? These are the people that paid money for a console most likely with the expectation that they would not have to deal with the issues this kind of thing creates.

With PC usually getting the games, MS basically trying to kill the idea of them having a console at all, living games and one day patches rendering discs useless for preservation, and now with consoles not even having the benefit of being a known constant, I'm just not sure what the point is anymore.
I mainly buy consoles for their racing game exclusives.

So far it's been really good when it comes the XBox One, with Forza 5 & 6 and Forza Horizon 2. No doubt there will be more Forza games in the future for the current XBox. I put hundreds of hours into these games, and I haven't even been able to fully complete one of them before a new Forza arrives. So as far the Xbox goes I'm not disappointed at all.

However I am disappointed with the PS4, I was really expecting a new Gran Turismo to launch with the PS4.
There's been 3 new Forza games since the last Gran Turismo (GT6). Right now the only exclusive I have for the PS4 is DriveClub, which is a fun game but doesn't really justify the purchase of a PS4 since it doesn't have the wealth of content as a Gran Turismo game. However a new Gran Turismo game has been announced.

I bought my PS4 with three game genres in mind. The reason I wanted those is because I haven't really played them since the C64, Amiga 500 and early PCs. Some variation with more braindead games I could play laying on my sofa.
Fighting games, driving games and something like those asian light turnbased RPGs.

So far I've found ONE game that fit that and that's the DOA game. The driving games doesn't click with me because I want a standard racing game with time attack and such. Not some sort of half mmo with strange missions and all kinds of things. The light RPGs genre is completely dead as far as I know.
Also I chose the PS4 because XBOX mostly have inferior PC games so I wanted asia inspired games that I seldom play otherwise.

It's been a real disappointment so far. :/

In terms of home consoles, I definitely agree.

I skipped the PS2 generation and only bought a PS3 in 2013 after a number of exclusives came out. I really liked The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, Ni No Kuni and Catherine, and it was working well as a blu-ray player so the purchase felt worth it, but then it died after a year and a half so I felt really burned by Sony. So far the PS4 has not released any compelling exclusive because I have no interest in the souls series and the only exclusive that I would want is The Last of Us remastered, which I've already played and Persona 5 which I should have been able to play on my PS3 if it hadn't died. Also there is still no way to play PSOne games on PS4 and no way to play my PS3 games that are essentially useless now. So Sony won't be getting any more support from me anytime soon.

I bought a Wii U also in 2013 when they were being sold for $200 and it had a lot of great exclusives. My only concern with the Nintendo NX is that I won't have access to all the Virtual Console games that I already bought at launch and that games won't be shared between the home console and the handheld. If they finally give an acceptable online account system and ensure that all digital games transfer to future consoles I will definitely consider.

The handhelds on the other hand have been amazing. Since Pokemon is my favorite game series the 3DS has been worth it for that alone. I didn't like that SNES VC is only available on the new 3DS, because I would like to play Earthbound on the go, but if my VC games from Wii U transfer over to the NX portable then I will likely get one sooner, otherwise I will wait for the next generation of Pokemon games. The Vita has had some great exclusives (that have since become not exclusives) but I prefer to play them in handheld form anyway. For visual novels it is my preferred platform and there are still a lot of upcoming games for it so I am definitely pleased with it.
I'm so disappointed in the current console generation that I just bought a PS3 instead.

The decision between having a console at cheaper price with may more (and better) games or a more expensive console with fewer, crappier games... hmmm... tough call.

This new console generation may be here, but it's still riding the short bus to school, know what I be saying?
The question should be, is anyone NOT disappointed in the current console generation? Because everyone should be disappointed. But me, because I don't care about consoles. But, baring that, when new consoles are so underwhelming hardware wise on release, there's nowhere to go from there. Unfortunately it worked for them, because the consoles sold like potatoes -especially the ps4-. So why should they push on hardware -like they did in prevous generations- when it works for them and it's cheaper? They gambled on brand. They won. So don't expect next generations to be less underpowered compared to a PC. And don't expect this generation to last more than a couple of years max.
I will watch Uncharted 4 on Youtube. That's all I can say about this console generation =D
Not really interested in current gen consoles. But I heard MS ist starting to make the XB1 compatible to XB360 games. Last time I looked after it they slugged around slowly with maybe one of the game I have being compatible; but that might be a reason to get one at one point in the future.

It would have been the reason to get one right away at realease.

meh... MS just love to fuck things up.

wyrenn: I'm about to start having kids.... so I'll just wait till they are old enough and then play the consoles they buy. Until then, PC.
You do realise that it will be your money they use to buy those consoles? Me I rather spend the cash on me :o)
