With the PS4k and Nintendo's NX coming out soon, this generation seems to be entering its 1.5 version, judging it by its last few years do you have any interest in buying a console? If you own one, are you disappointed with it?

I'm primarily a PC gamer, have been for some 5 years, before that it was all consoles. 2 years ago I got the opportunity to buy a PS4 and Wii U for relatively cheap (I was out of the country, currency exchange was good, etc.), I took it, I figured like in previous generations they would have more than its fair share of exclusives that I would want to play. Unfortunately I've been mostly disappointed.

I feel that Bloodborne is the only reason to own a PS4. All it has are multiplatform games that run better on PC, re-releases of games I already played on the PS3, and shitty exclusives (The Order 1886, Knack, etc.). I only own two games for it, Infamous Second Son, which I did not like as much as the previous games in the series; and Bloodborne, which is great but, even for someone like me who is content with a 30fps lock as long as it doesn't fall below that, it runs pretty bad. Persona 5 is my most anticipated game of the year, but aside from that, there's really no other reason in the horizon for me to turn on my PS4.

The much maligned Wii U has seen a lot more use in my hands than the PS4. It's not really competing with the PC, unlike the others, and it has more great games that aren't available elsewhere. Still, there aren't that many of them, its half-generation is already over, replaced by the NX, which reports say will have ports of all the best Wii U games, really driving home the point that there's no reason to own a Wii U, and the NX is where it's at. I liked my Wii U, but I don't think I'll buy a Nintendo console again before it's already at the end of its lifespan, so I don't have to wait on the kindness of Nintendo to actually suport it.

Point is, I'm very disappointed in this latest console generation, and really don't see a reason to own one at the moment.

I definitely want to buy some other Nintendo console one day so that I can play the Nintendo classics I missed out on, such as the Zelda series.

I can't say much about the other consoles as there are very few console exclusives that seem worth it to me. The ones that do seem worth it include Bloodborne, RDR(prev gen, but I'll probably get a console one day just to play it) and possibly the Halo series (I can't stand to play an fps with a controller, but I suppose one can get used to it)

Not really. Mostly the games seem to be multiplatform (also for PC), and I don't feel like buying a console only for relatively few exclusives.

It was different back in the PSX and PS2 times, they felt different enough from PC games and gaming that it made sense to complement your gaming PC with a console.

Also, I already have more games on PC than I have time to play, so...

For what it's worth, the 3DS is what I play the most, behind only the PC, and I've always been quite satisfied with that one. It was the 3DS remake of Ocarina of Time that got me into the series, since I never had a Nintendo console growing up.

It does have a 1.5 version as well (ugghh...), but you only need it for two games and to play SNES games on it, other than that the cheap versions of the handheld are pretty great, and all you need.

Cool, I have looked at a 3DS, but I'll bide my time for now. PC upgrade comes first :)

Remove 'console' from the thread title, and the answer is YES.

I haven't owned a console since the late '90s and that was the PSX. I haven't felt like I've missed out on anything, especially when there a so many PC games that have mods that greatly extend their replayability. The games that initially helped me make this decision were the Panzer General series. (Panzer 1, Allied, Pacific, Panzer 2, People's)

My PS4 is the first console I've owned and I must say like you that I'm a bit disappointed in games range so far. I bought it at release fully knowing it might take time for good games to come but the range is still bad.

Though I do like its Netflix and Viaplay functions among others.

I'm about to start having kids.... so I'll just wait till they are old enough and then play the consoles they buy. Until then, PC.

The pointlessness of consoles has reached an all time high. Two of them are nothing but glorified PCs, and the third one is shrouded in so much mystery that the best concept is a massive question mark.

Though, knowing the corporate philosophy behind the third, I'm willing to bet, that unlike rumors had, that it won't be in line with the consoles of now. And even if it is, it'll be arriving late to the party. AGAIN.

You sure as heck won't be able to play Blu Ray, I reckon.

As for me, I'm not about to drop 200/300 USD to play some old titles of yore that are overpriced to begin with. Lookin' at you, Nintendo. This is a guy who shelled out the money for Final Fantasy IX on Vita and felt he got every last dollar's worth.

Sums up my thoughts pretty much.

Other than being compact and easy to hook up to a tv and play, there really isn't much else to consoles these days. They're surely more appealing to kids and less tech savvy gamers that don't care about pixel perfect games.

To me the console era died with the PS2. PS3/X360 were already starting to look like PC's and the latest generation was the last nail in the coffin.

I'm actually starting to hope the entire console industry will collapse due to this mess, and then hopefully emerge from the ashes with a stronger focus on what originally made consoles appealing. Or, y'know, Nintendo and Sony could just publish their games on PC in the future, like Sega is doing. Whichever works.

And hey, if you really want an idiot proof "console like" experience, there's the Steam Machine or Dell is selling those nice, ugly, Alienware machines! :D I recently got to go to the Austin Goodwill Computerworks and they had some of the old Alienware machines around, from back when they just looked like normal computers.

I think it's just meant to play 4k movies, games would be impossible. It's Sony trying to boost their declining TV sales by pushing 4k. It's the exact same thing they did with 3D and we know how long that lasted.
