Er, GOG... I know a lot of people have already pointed this out, but does this mean that this ‘general information’ will be displayed on my friends’ profiles if they’re public, regardless of my own privacy settings? Because if so, that’s a pretty big problem, especially if you’re setting this info to public by default. You really shouldn’t be displaying ANY information about people's friends on their profiles without the explicit permission of everyone involved. This is exactly the kind of thing that Facebook’s been getting into trouble for; I don’t understand how you can be making the same mistake.

I’m not trying to be harsh here - I appreciate that you’re asking for our feedback in advance this time. But many people have pointed out problems with your proposed settings, so I hope you’re going to actually respond to that feedback by making changes, rather than just ‘listening’.

While it's possible I highly doubt it'll ever be useful to be honest. Steamspy shut down rather quickly but it's quite possible in a couple of months many people will be back to public again, at least to levels where the numbers are significant (while perhaps not the majority of users).

On GOG though, not only is the number of people way lower, there's "probably" a larger subsection sensitive about privacy (This might be negated by the notion that most GOG users aren't used to getting spam invites etc) but most importantly, the data collected, at least when it comes to playtime will be extremely unreliable at best, given that it'll only ever record that information if and when people use Galaxy to play their game. Because of that the only games it'll really be effective for is the games that require the use of Galaxy in some form or another.

I'd still find the info interesting to see, but it likely won't be something you can draw conclusions from.

Same here. I also had set it to 'now hidden' and when I checked just now, after reading your post, I found that it had reverted to 'now public'.


@GOG: if it happens that your website resets these settings to default due to some error, it is all the the more important, that your default setting is the privacy protecting one. Not the 'make everything public' one!

What about those of us who WANT our profiles publicly (as in literally everyone) viewable because the entire reason they wanted a visible library was to be able to show it to friends who may not have or want a GOG account? :/

I feel a bit frustrated at the prospect of getting nannied out of doing what I actually wanted to do because the privacy settings won't mean exactly what they say so we can choose for ourselves what we do and don't want.

My advice is to quote one of the blues in your post, like what the others are doing (you can edit your post to do that), and wait till monday. Since it's the weekend now, the staff are off work.

While privacy should always be the default option, I too wonder if there could be a separate optional portion to show your game library to other folks (non-GOG), that you've bought your games from GOG, for example.

Ah, OK, thanks. Despite being on GOG for a long while I haven't often had much useful I could say in the forums proper, so I'm still not terribly familiar with their ins and outs. ^^;

And yeah, I 100% agree that max privacy should be the default, but I'd like some flexibility outside of that.

I realize GOG wants to build customers, but... like, any time I evangelize to my friends about something I like all I typically get is a pat on the head and ignored so it's so much easier to just work around what my friends do or don't want to do. And I think most of my friends are Steam-only users. [shrugs sadly]

And "what games do you play/are you playing" comes up often enough as a convo--especially when I meet new friends--that I've wanted a way to just link to my GOG library for ages, so combined with the above, finding out it might be GOG-user-viewable-only thing drew a disappointed "Wait, noooooooooo" response from me.

i guess that, in order to catter to the people who want to display their library and profile here to people not yet members/users on GOG (maybe in order to give them incentive to join or whatever), GOG will now think it"s a better idea to make every profile public AND viewable by anyone on internet (not just gog users) as default setting !

(preferably with also realname displayed on the profile as well)

sorry to jump on you, but frankly, even if i understand that some people would need/want their profile publicly viewable even outside of GOG, i'm fine with that but ONLY if it's a choice that is strictly OPT-IN for those who want to do that, and that the default settings (prone to be reset many times whenever thei do website upgrade) is the most private to begin with

privacy should never be an opt-in choice... it should be the default and opt-out only setting

Now, however, since there is gog connect and such API interfacting between gog and steam, i would like an OPTIONAL user accoutn setting that let STEAM know which games i ALREADY have here on GOG, so steam stop recommending me 90% of my gog library in their front page

because afterthat, if i dismiss the game, steam believes i'm not interested in this game (in fact i am: i purchased it... usually i dont purchase things i'm not interested in) and also that i'm not interested in games similar to it...which is of course very innefficient

Of course. Was just offering a workaround, and pointing out what part of your URL caused the issue. Also, the whatwg url spec is probably a more useful resource to link to, as that documents/specifies what browsers actually implement, rather than the theoretical rfc model. :) (See its "goals" for particular details.)

I think it would have been better to not jump on me rather than apologize after the fact, perhaps? There was no need to strawman my request into the worst implementation possible. :/

I think we can have the options be something like "Nobody", "Friends", "All GOG Users", and "Everyone". Depending on what GOG's URL system looks like, maybe it's even possible to have an "Unlisted" option, where your profile is normally locked to some subset of GOG users but you get a URL that isn't easily guessable that you could pass privately to non-GOG users if you want. And then the default option would always be "Nobody" for maximum leaving it up to the user to choose.

I'd like even more customization with the library too. Like maybe you can quick-link to specific tags or even only display certain tags. I already have "Currently Playing" tags I used for my own reference, which would be useful for convos-with-others purposes too.

I thank you for the suggestion, but I admit I'm always a bit leery of ever creating even more internet accounts if I don't need to. I also have almost 400 games which would take a while to add (which is why I didn't just create a spreadsheet to pass around; so daunting...)

The games are submitted from your account to the wiki by Barefoot Essentials.. you don't have to add them all yourself
