Cause there's no business like show-business!

Our DRM-Free approach to digital distribution has been the foundation of GOG.com since day one and we're convinced it is now firmly rooted in the gaming industry landscape. More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. We think this is a good time to take the next step in our quest to make digital entertainment better for everyone. Today we set out to spread our DRM-Free ideas across the movie industry! That's right: GOG.com now offers DRM-Free movies.

Our goal is to offer you cinema classics as well as some all-time favorite TV series with no DRM whatsoever, for you to download and keep on your hard drive or stream online whenever you feel like it. We talked to most of the big players in the movie industry and we often got a similar answer: "We love your ideas, but … we do not want to be the first ones. We will gladly follow, but until somebody else does it first, we do not want to take the risk". DRM-Free distribution is not a concept their lawyers would accept without hesitation. We kind of felt that would be the case and that it's gonna take patience and time to do it, to do it, to do it right. That's quite a journey ahead of us, but every gamer knows very well that great adventures start with one small step. So why not start with something that feels very familiar? We offer you a number of gaming and internet culture documentaries - all of them DRM-Free, very reasonably priced, and presenting some fascinating insight into topics close to a gamer's heart. Now, what do we have in store for you?

- There's a whole new Movie Catalog for you to browse!
- All the movies we sell are priced at $5.99 (that's a launch promo price for a few of them), and we aim to have that as the main price point for most of our future releases
- Two of the movies - The Art of Playing and TPB AFK: The Pirate Bay Away From Keyboard are available for FREE, so that you can test our new movie distribution features
- Most of our movies are in Full HD 1080p quality, some in 720p. With those of you with limited bandwidth or download quota in mind, we also supply much lighter 576p versions.
- Apart from downloading your movies you have the option to watch them streaming online, right here on GOG.com
- GOG.com is famous for its bonus goodies - each movie will come with as many of them as we can muster
- You can expect subsequent movie releases each week

That's it. GOG.com Movies is a go, time to get some popcorn!

Crosmando: How do you encode them? File-format? Please tell me MKV or I won't be happy.
MKV doesn't do anything. It's just a simple container. You can have a badly encoded video in MKV as well.
What's important: The codecs and the encoder.
Ideal for lossless in terms of filesize would there be something like Lagarith and FLAC.
When it has to be compressed, the best out there nowadays is x264 and probably AAC.
But MKV? Doesn't mean a thing.
The idea is nice but the current catalogue is worthless.
MNM??
I hope you'll get something worthwile in that list, I'm excited for this news, but i was expecting something a bit more...
Old, and good and well... not completely shit.

Get some real classics on there gog!

Exoanthrope: Oh my GOG, Bronies...
Its funny since I watched the documentary on Netflix (Out of curiosity as to how this show got so popular) but I find it interesting they never mention thing like this in the fandom:

(Note that I understand not all Bronies are like this, but you guys gotta moderate the extreme parts of your fandom)
This is a nice expansion upon the Galaxy of Games - movies related to videogames! Now we just need to hunt down various shows and movies related to the medium, so that GOG can get cracking on it. First up: The reviews and movie done by the AVGN, as he probably wouldn't mind having extra revenue streams for his work. And bring his game, too.

Angry Video Game Nerd - complete DVD pack

Wikipedia has a list of videogame-based movies. Notably, GOG already has the related games here on GOG.

Mr.Caine: The idea is nice but the current catalogue is worthless.
Bring Disney, Warner Bros. Miremax in here.

Fantasia, Citizen Kane, and Quintin Tarantino's first 2 movies would be awesome.
low rated
But why? I don't understand. Nobody buys movies or music. Don't be silly.

AVGN? Yes. The other video game movies listed? Oh god no, why? :P

F4LL0UT: I on the other hand was always hoping that GOG would eventually extend its business into movies.
Then they should offer silent and non-silent classics like

The Complete Metropolis
The Wind

etc

bjwaters: It also might not hurt to dig into the better parts of video "abandonware": the public domain. 1940s Superman cartoons anyone? Who knows what gems might be floating around.
Well, at least there's a bunch of classic Sherlock Holmes movies from the 40's in the public domain.
The problem is, they are so worn out copies that they are almost unwatchable.

Of course these are also available as restored, for all practical purposes perfect versions. But the results of the restoration work are no longer PD material, and the last time I checked, they were pretty high-priced...

triock: I would rather see ebooks here. :I
This.
I'd like to have some good DRM-Free movies and, hopefully, also ebooks. So it's a great move for me. :)

Now we just need some good stuff. Maybe good old movies?

I'm sure they will try to expand the catalogue in that direction as soon as they can.

The files their hosting now are x264 (not sure if FLAC or not), it just would be better to use an open-source container.
