Our DRM-Free approach to digital distribution has been the foundation of GOG.com since day one and we're convinced it is now firmly rooted in the gaming industry landscape. More and more users start to expect and demand the digital content they paid for to be free from any kind of restrictive mechanisms that limit access to their collections and get in the way of enjoyment. Let's be honest - there is no movie in the catalog yet, there are some hipster's documentaries...but not THE MOVIE I'm willing to spend time watching it - I would rather play games instead...
And even more: pay for it that money? Maybe if there is possibility for some rental option.. for $1, then maybe?

Crosmando: Yeah, though it's kinda expected, the big movie studios like Warner Bros are notoriously conservative about this type of thing, heck they're the main people who lobby governments and the like to shut down torrent sites, and are the biggest supporters of copy-protection out there. I have to doubt that much will come from this except some low-budget indie type stuff, certainly not major films.
I'm not expecting Warner Bros or Sony here... but if movies like e.g. Stalker are released on Youtube "for free", then there is chance to get some great movies here too...
Well, I have just expected a little more exciting and more "artsy" titles from start, e.g. something from Sundance etc... so I will have to wait a little... :)

Don;t forget we have DVD/Blu-Ray, TV, and Netflix in the competition.

Very interesting idea.
If they add at least english subtitles (English is not my first language so I prefer to have also a visual confirmation of what is said on the movie I'm watching), and things I'm willing to watch I'll surely buy at least some in the future.

Waaa! O_O First thing I see is a new layout for the website and now this? And here I thought that getting Linux support was the biggest change that I was going to be seeing around here. I was not expecting DRM free movies, but I will be cautiously optimistic about it. Hopefully it will remain focused around tech/gaming movies with perhaps some old classics thrown in.

This is a nice idea, so long as it doesn't get in the way of game releases (indie, classic or otherwise). For now the library on offer seems to be documentaries with varying degrees of circlejerkiness (If you'll pardon an expression).

Maybe you could get some free public domain films in here, or something? I know you can already find these on Archive.org and such, but Night of the Living Dead might spark a bit more interest, and it technically is an indie film. Maybe you could even bundle Manos: The Hands of Fate with the indie game adaption.

EDIT: Another idea. This is just for a laugh. Maybe you could get that infamous Witcher movie/TV series that all the Polish fans seem to hate? Might help to promote the Witcher 3... or put people off of it...

Ok, I just saw this on my RSS reader and I haven't checked it yet. Nor do I particularly enjoy movies. Still, my reaction was "fuck yeah".

Hope I eventually get to buy DRM free books here, as well.

How is it that Dexter's Laboratory, Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Sym-Bionic Titan did not get this fandom?

Why I mentioned these cartoons in perticular? Well Lauren Faust who created MLP: FIM is the wife of Craig McCracken who he and Lauren helped made Powerpuff Girls and Foster's. Craig McCracken is also a close friend of Genndy Tartakovsky, my absolute favorite cartoonist, who both made Dexter's Laboratory and Genndy with his friend Paul Ruddish made on of my favorite cartoons Samurai Jack.


I feel so sorry for Genndy that his show Sym-Bionic Titan got canceled in its first season. The only show that felt like a classic Cartoon Network show.




So back to my original question, Why did these shows which had the same talent as Laruen Faust's did not became a big sensation?

At first I thought, oh wow, movies and tv series, DRM free no less. Only to discover a handful of - dare I say it - boring documentaries. At least half of them are available to me on Netflix (probably all of them if you live in the USA). And even for free I do not feel temped to watch them, let alone pay money in order to do so. Are there even people out there who will watch a documentary like the ones on offer more then once? I seriously doubt it unless they themselves or a good friend or relative are in it.
But, who knows, perhaps some classic old movies or tv shows will pop up *eventually* that are worth paying money for. But the current selection, no way.

An interesting and, for me, totally unexpected direction for GOG. I wish you guys all the best of luck with it.

I'll join in the chorus in saying that I'd also love to see ebooks here as well. I know Tor has been doing the drm free thing on their ebooks for a while now. They have a massive catalog and great authors. They seem like a great partner if you did go the ebook route.

As for the movies, no The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters? Hopefully this one comes here to GOG.

By the way, I love how the news post is full of "well, none of the big players wanted anything to do with us," and "a journey of a thousands miles begins with a single step" and "it's going to take a lot of patience." This is probably as close as you'll ever see to a marketer outright saying that yeh, they know their release line-up is garbage, but theyt're kind of hoping for a miracle.

In all honesty I'd rather the movies were a separate sub-site. Seeing them mingled in with the games just junks it up for me.
