UPDATE: We've added a new option to the Privacy settings in GOG Profiles - from now on you can turn off your profile on GOG entirely, so no one can see any kind of information that is shown on the profile page. This also means that when you turn off your profile, you won’t be visible on your friends’ friends lists, even if they decide to keep their profiles visible.
The option to enable/disable your GOG Profile can be found in your account „Privacy & Settings” options, under „Privacy” tab.

We just introduced a new feature on GOG.COM: User Profiles – a social way to share what you and your friends are up to. See what your friends on GOG are playing, achieving, and sharing across four sections – Feed, Profile, Games and Friends.

Your Feed is the centerpiece of your Profile. Here, you’ll see which games your friends have been playing, all sorts of achievements and milestones, as well as general thoughts, screenshots, and forum activity. You can dispense your approval at whim and share your own stuff as well!

Your Profile is all about you and your gaming accomplishments. It's a summary of your activity, like the time you've spent in your games , your latest achievements (and just how rare they are among other users), as well as a glimpse at what your most active friends have been up to.

If you want to know more about your Games, you need to hit the the third tab. It contains a list of all the games you own on GOG, together with stats like time spent in-game and your progress towards unlocking the achievements. Sort the list, compare stats with your friends, and get some healthy competition going.

Finally – your Friends: get a general summary of their achievements and hours played. Here you'll also see which games are the most popular among your friends right now, so you can join them in multiplayer or find something you might enjoy yourself.

Of course, your profile comes with some sweet personalization options, choose a wallpaper from your game collection and share a few words with the world.

User Profiles are available for all GOG.COM users. Your personal gameplay stats like achievements, time played and milestones depend on GOG Galaxy, but if you’re not using the optional client you can still use the feed, post in it and interact with your friends.

Launching profiles also means adding new privacy settings on our end. You'll find three new Privacy options in your account's „Privacy & settings” area. These settings allow you to set the visibility for your profile summary, your games, your friends, etc.
So what are you waiting for? There's so much room for activities!

Tauto: Is my slip,showing?
avatar
Andrzejef: To me - a total stranger - only things that show up is your profile pic, a backround (I guess), and the amount of games owned / achievements / hours played.
Everything else is -

"This profile's section is private
Tauto's current privacy settings limit visibility of their activity"

... So yeah, pretty private to me.
There is also option to add as a friend and send a message, so pretty sane at that, I'd say.
Oh thank God,I thought for sure my slip was showing:)

BKGaming: While I largly agree with you, you are waisting your time here. If people want to vent about the changes let them vent. GOG will either take the feedback and make some improvements or they won't. Sooner or latter the complaints will calm down and people will either accept or move on.
You're kinda right, except that at this point after finding out how whackjob many of the posters apparently are I more or less don't want to waste my time on the forums any more at all.

There's only so much I can take of being told how pitiful and enabling and sheep I am for not being a crazy hysterical hyperbolic conspiracy theorist complaining about imaginary nonexistent things without backing away slowly and then running.

mystral: (i.e. not being able to hide Galaxy activity or the size of your library).
Wait, so... wait. All this screaming about how GOG is baby-eating evil that's going to be sued into oblivion by the EU and insulting me left and right is because... people can see that you own games and play them sometimes? Like, you know, literally every single other gamer in existence? For real?

Yep, I'm done here, I can't even.

Then leave? Participation in the forums is 100% voluntary. Stop complaining!

Chacranajxy: Honestly, what are you guys up to that you'd be so concerned about people seeing you played some Eurojank RPG for like 3 1/2 hours?
Apparently this needs to be repeated on every page.

"It's not that I have anything to hide. I just have nothing I want you to see". That's how real privacy works. Just because something isn't important, incriminating of sensitive, doesn't mean it's ok to have it be made public without your express permission.

CARRiON-XCII: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2018/04/23/gog-adds-user-profiles/

Even RPS took note of this thread.
From the comments:

"Thanks for reporting on this so that I could change my privacy settings."

Is any more proof of what great a job GOG is doing informing the users about important changes necessary, when they have to learn about it from a news site?
I figured goglodytes would whine and complain, do I entered the thread to see all the dumb complaints of “i can't believe you people spent time on this when xyz is still not done.” but lo and behold, gog shared personal data with the world that I don't think they even said they would share and set defaults to ignore privacy. The data could potentially be used by pedophiles to lure children or by gifted to find who isn't playing their gifts. It's definitely not inert.

Good times.

Now, I don't care. You all can know how much I use Galaxy. Usually I don't use it anyway. But I do care that it was the default. That is a pretty bad practice.

Now I'm off to find these schnazzy background profile images folks are talking about.

Here here! I have very bad anxiety and I enjoy GOG because I have my own little bubble of games that nobody needs to know about besides me. I feel violated now that I have any history visable to the public just because I used GOG galaxy to play them and can't turn it off or purge it to all zeros.

Ok, there's a serious privacy issue and I sent a ticket.
Since it concerns every one who has friends who like to stay "hidden" I'll make it an open letter here:
I was made aware of the fact that on the (my, viewed from other users) profile page people that people who don't want to be seen are still visible as "active friends". Since I respect the wish of privacy of those people, there was no other way other than set my own profile page to "me only". That's a shame.

What you should do is
a) Respect people wanting to be hidden and NOT show them on other's people profiles
b) Make a cut between my activity and friends. I may share my stuff, but I have no right to share other people's stuff.

This is really messed up, please fix this ASAP and I think you even owe an apology to both the people who wanted to stay in shadow, and the people who naively shared their profiles not knowing they would expose other people that way.

Kind regards,
Tom
So if you have friends who don't want to be seen, you currently have no other options other than either "profile page and active friends" is set to "only me" or unfriend them.
I actually like the profile page, but this my decision that I can't make for anyone else. To "only me" it is for now.

Jeysie: Yeah, seriously. It's good to know not everyone on these forums is nuts, though I'm still really regretting finding out what the GOG community is actually like.

Pheace: what used to be private before and it's right there on that picture
avatar
Jeysie: IT SAYS NOTHING BUT "This profile's section is private
Pheace's current privacy settings limit visibility of their activity" FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE.
I'm asking seriously. Don't you see Pheace's number of games, achievements and hours played in the screenshot you've posted? Upper right corner.

That's what people are complaining about.
