UPDATE: We've added a new option to the Privacy settings in GOG Profiles - from now on you can turn off your profile on GOG entirely, so no one can see any kind of information that is shown on the profile page. This also means that when you turn off your profile, you won’t be visible on your friends’ friends lists, even if they decide to keep their profiles visible.
The option to enable/disable your GOG Profile can be found in your account „Privacy & Settings” options, under „Privacy” tab.

We just introduced a new feature on GOG.COM: User Profiles – a social way to share what you and your friends are up to. See what your friends on GOG are playing, achieving, and sharing across four sections – Feed, Profile, Games and Friends.

Your Feed is the centerpiece of your Profile. Here, you’ll see which games your friends have been playing, all sorts of achievements and milestones, as well as general thoughts, screenshots, and forum activity. You can dispense your approval at whim and share your own stuff as well!

Your Profile is all about you and your gaming accomplishments. It's a summary of your activity, like the time you've spent in your games , your latest achievements (and just how rare they are among other users), as well as a glimpse at what your most active friends have been up to.

If you want to know more about your Games, you need to hit the the third tab. It contains a list of all the games you own on GOG, together with stats like time spent in-game and your progress towards unlocking the achievements. Sort the list, compare stats with your friends, and get some healthy competition going.

Finally – your Friends: get a general summary of their achievements and hours played. Here you'll also see which games are the most popular among your friends right now, so you can join them in multiplayer or find something you might enjoy yourself.

Of course, your profile comes with some sweet personalization options, choose a wallpaper from your game collection and share a few words with the world.

User Profiles are available for all GOG.COM users. Your personal gameplay stats like achievements, time played and milestones depend on GOG Galaxy, but if you’re not using the optional client you can still use the feed, post in it and interact with your friends.

Launching profiles also means adding new privacy settings on our end. You'll find three new Privacy options in your account's „Privacy & settings” area. These settings allow you to set the visibility for your profile summary, your games, your friends, etc.
So what are you waiting for? There's so much room for activities!

johnnygoging: I was keen to see if they'd walk it back though because if they didn't, it meant that competitors were in a position of offering the user more privacy.
To the best of my knowledge, the competitors don't broadcast to the world when you're online, which Gog still insists on doing.

And they don't make all the privacy settings opt-out - so many unsuspecting members who haven't logged in for a while are still having their privacy invaded because their profiles are wide open.

Edit: typo

truhlik: I'm curious if the gog will learn from it. To make all new features optionally. Though if remember situation about auto-install of Galaxy client I'm doubt about it.
they will not.

Catmancer: Wait what are people complaining about? I don't feel like going through hundreds of pages. I thought this was a cool update.
About lack of privacy with setting profiles online, which is illegal in the EU without the explicit allowance of the customer. Gog is obliged by law to ask us if we wan't allow them to share data with the world. Just changing terms of use is not enough anymore. They need to directly ask the customer if they agree to changes. They didnt do that and hence the fuss. Also they didn't give us the option before to shut off this online profiles function which make all of this discussion not happen in the first place. That has been partially corrected now by gog by allowing users to disable online profiles. Galaxy though is still leaking private data online if you do playtime and achievements tracking. In this case Steam is much better so that if you set the profile to private nothing is shared besides your username.

Ophelium: Never. You know how it is.

Oh, and if I say your slip is showing again, will GOG delete this thread too?
No,not delete but I'm sure they would love to close it.Oh,by the way in case you don't know the nasties here love to spam into deletion threads and posts made by me because they hate the truth in their face.

bler144: On the bright side, the fact that the forum search function is horribly broken probably limits some of the damage a data collector can do on this site in the near term.
Data collectors don't use search functions, they trawl.

Lukaszmik: ...
So the short answer is : it's pure conjecture not based on any real facts.

First Facebook login is not the result of some sort of dark agreement between Gog and Facebook, the API is widely available, it can be used by nearly anybody who want to use it to authenticate users, Google and others offer similar API. Personally I wouldn't use it (I prefer to keep my logins separated) but then again I don't have a Facebook account to begin with, but some peoples find it convenient.

avatar
Lukaszmik: Would they have that information without "profiles?" Yes, but implementation of that element also means actual need to store that data.
This part doesn't really mean anything, store the data ? you mean data that, by it's very nature, was already stored in their database ?

The games you own, already stored. (If kind of help for an online video game store to know what games your customers have purchased or not)
The achievement / hours played, already stored.
Your forum posts.... obviously already stored.
Your Friends, same thing.

So what new data has a "actual need to be stored" ?

Profile or no profile all those info were already stored, the only new "stored" thing is the "thought" feature of the feed and that's simply because it didn't exists before.

avatar
Lukaszmik: The timing, the implementation approach, the lack of limitations in Privacy Policy (and rather contrary, the clause allowing GOG to "trusted partner" ANYBODY without limitations and subsequently quite legally exchange any and all information with that entity in a legal way)... all point that way.
That's a very standard EULA clause, "trusted partners" can mean the external consultants working for them, their hosting company who might need to do some maintenance, etc... or even peoples from CDPR, and usually all those trusted partners are under very strict NDAs.

Pangaea666: Facebook are specifically mentioned in the Privacy Policy document of 25 April 2018. Mostly in relation to Facebook Connect,
As you said it's because of Facebook connect, if you use Facebook to login to Gog then you have to understand that potentially Facebook will know that you use Gog and when you connect.

avatar
Pangaea666: but with the huuuuge black hole of:

Data is gathered strictly in accordance with the social
network(s)’ terms and conditions, so check your privacy settings
on Facebook.
This one is actually the other way around; that's part of Facebook connect, you can chose what part from your Facebook information are sent during authentication, or if you prefer what information Facebook send to Gog.

avatar
Pangaea666: Social media platforms for the purpose of personalized and
targeted communication;
If you use social networks they can send you newsletter / offer using them, it doesn't mean they are suddenly going to send all your personal info to Facebook, Twitter, etc...
avatar
IXOXI: I do not understand why tags cannot be visible and only data gathered from galaxy are presented.
Because they are trying to make Galaxy more appealing by giving it more features. They've not stopped pretending it's merely an option yet, but they are doing their best to get that bloated spy on everyone's computer.
avatar
Gersen: So the short answer is : it's pure conjecture not based on any real facts.
As much as I hate to say it, but isn't that to be expected to a degree?
At least it seems to me (ianal etc) to be rather difficult to establish enough information to convincingly argue in favor of either scenario here.
Honest question: ignoring for a moment any personal hard line I might set for myself, what facts would I need to look out for to get an appropriatly reliable idea about what's happening with my data?

You're right. It's our fault GOG went cold on us. We have to own up to our mistakes.

When was the last time any of us sent flowers to GOG? Or chocolates? Or even a card on those special occasions? We take GOG for granted. We treat it like an old, comfortable slipper.

No wonder GOG was wooed by the social media crowd. They make GOG feel young again. They pay attention to GOG, compliment it. They laugh at GOG's jokes.

Sure, they may leave in the middle of the night, and not call the next morning. But they swear they're going to leave Steam & dedicate themselves to GOG full time. Eventually.

An online store needs romance, adventure. It needs to be swept of its feet from time to time. We need to do better, guys.

Thanks gog. This is a great way to seperate the real accounts from the trolls, spammers, scammers and alt-accounts spamming here with an agenda.

NO PROFILE = NOT REAL

Easy as that! Again, thank you gog for working hard to improve this place for the real gamers on here!

The "real gamers" with 4 games? Make this a bit more realistic here: https://www.gog.com/games?price=free&sort=popularity&page=1
