Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

ShadowWulfe: I get the impression that GOG is severely understaffed. The pace they move and whatnot.
If I do not remember it wrongly, gOg have a little bit more than 30 employees. As far as I know, it is one of the largest numbers of employees in any of the DD stores, more than double of for example Steam. Compare with for example Gamers Gate and Desura, where you can count all employees using your fingers.

edit - and that's before any office moves....

I think they've hit the 70s for employees, but can't recall where I've seen the number, if I had seen it indeed. Let me go take a look.

Edit: LinkedIn lists 40 employees, and a company size of 51-200

that can't be right. Steam is Valve and Valve is larger than gog.com. Valve might be larger than gog.com + cdpred.

yes, but not all people at Valve works on Steam, only x number of people do so. It would be silly to think that all Valve employees worked on Steam.... but then maybe that's why HL3 is delayed...

Anyway, there are about 15-20 Valve employees (if I remember correctly) working directly on Steam, including development and customer support.

edit - Valve as a corporation apparently have about ~330 employees. http://blogs.seattletimes.com/brierdudley/2013/11/04/a-glimpse-of-valves-steam-machine-controller-design-and-hardware-plans/. According to this article, about 40 of them are tinkering with the Steam Machines, so I guess that leaves ~289 working on Steam and the rest developing games. (that was a joke, by the way, not to be taken literary)

Well, they probably need a few new web design staff... ;)

Future_Suture: Last day of September, still no news on the much anticipated Galaxy client. Just give us some news on where you are at, GOG.

Pheace: They did in another post somewhere, and from the sound of it it was nowhere near ready

Thanks! Hopefully with the release of Galaxy, GOG will finally introduce all those Linux clients of games that it is selling as they are readily available elsewhere.
Hopefully Tuesday we actually get some kind of notification.

Just received my beta invite e-mail today. I have not been following this at all. My apologies if this has been covered in the previous 900+ posts, but there is a line that bothers me in the short Google description: "Download the best games on Windows & Mac. A vast selection of titles, DRM-free , with free goodies, customer love, and one fair price for all regions." What does the underlined mean?

Is this a charge for the service? Is it a one-time charge? Is it a monthly fee (like MMOs)?

Again, sorry if this was asked and answered previously. This seems to be a hot topic :)

That bit referred to the prices for the games in their catalogue, which until recently were the same for every buyer (this is still true for most games, but newer games are allowed to have regional pricing nowadays). It's not about Galaxy at all.

It's also worth noting that if you do end of paying more for a newer game than others, GOG makes up the difference and gives you store credit:

Is there a release date for Galaxy that I missed? I am still waiting.

Future_Suture: Is there a release date for Galaxy that I missed? I am still waiting.
Evidently, you have missed a lot. Galaxy is not just a thing that can be shipped. From what I understand, it is an entire ecosystem. Matchmaking, friends, game downloads, etc. Bits and pieces of the back-end work are already done/being done, and from what I can gather a large part of the effort presently is fixing the download/install system for older titles so that they aren't just one big dumb executable file that has to be downloaded entirely before extracting, which makes patching the titles harder than it needs to be. Especially for larger titles.

I imagine once this has been completed, at least to a sufficient degree, work can begin in earnest on the actual download client. The client, by the way, is what I suspect you meant/implied when you were asking if "galaxy" has released. I suspect it will be the last piece of the puzzle before the system goes live.

SHORT VERSION:
There is no release date because Galaxy is bigger than just a client.
