Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

SpaceManThe: Will people who are using chrome be able to use the client or will it be like the downloader and not work for them? It would be nice to have access to my games again.
See this post.

JMich: See this post.
It wasn't working when Stalker got the updates but it seems to be working now.

Maybe chrome has updated itself since then because it says it's already up to date
Version 35.0.1916.153 m

Google Chrome is up to date.

Would it be possible for this GOG galaxy program to back up save-game files?

For example; I insert a USB stick, press a button on the Galaxy client and all the save games from my current GOG selection would be copied to a defined location (in this case, my USB).

An easy way to store all my save games in one place would be useful.
Could you imagine if Google Glass implemented an achievement system. Achievement unlocked! Flipped someone the bird. Achievement Unlocked! Verbally Assaulted Stranger. Achievement unlocked! Punched in the face.

Although, that would end horribly with how we have so many people going on rampages lately.

Haven't yelled at anyone for 14+ days. Achievement Unlocked!
Tipped more than 10% of the bill. Achievement Unlocked!
Helped your kid with his homework. Achievement Unlocked!
Was complimented for the work you've done. Achievement Unlocked!

Not sure, but I think I can see some potential in that ;)

Fixed that for ya :)

BuckoA51: They should buy up Xfire and start developing it again, it already works in so many games (including older games) and has great voice chat features, but the new owners are really dumb and shut down all the user forums etc. I'd love to see this come back under the GOG banner.

disi: If the game developers build in features for those community protocols it should not be an issue to have a unified client. All GOG Galaxy needs to know, is how to talk to the game client and pass on the connection information.

There is no need to implement extra code into the games.
I don't understand what you mean at all, sorry. Extra code into what games?

The reason I said Xfire is because I liked the old Xfire client but the new owners are only interested in "e-sports" and have let it stagnate to the point where it's getting unusable now. When it finally dies so does in-game support, chat and web browsing in loads of older games. If GOG Galaxy were to fill this void I would be ecstatic. I can't imagine anyone other than GoG being interested in fixing in-game support for older DirectX 8 titles for instance.

Xfire alternatives are okay but under-developed, Raptr doesn't have voice chat, Overwolf doesn't support many games and Steam only supports Steam and has crap voice chat, etc and so on.

I realise I am probably dreaming here and whoever owns Xfire wouldn't just let it go anyway, even if they couldn't give two poops about their client now.
Please offer a Linux-Client.
That would be great.
Don't get me wrong, STEAM on Linux is awesome, but a big Competitor like GOG:GALAXY would fit more in the Open-Source-World than STEAM.

In January or thereabouts they announced they will be adding the Linux platform to the GOG catalogue later this fall. In the recent announcements regarding GOG Galaxy they've stated that Galaxy is targetted towards and will support all of the platforms they offer games on including Windows, Mac and Linux.

It's not clear whether the Linux platform will become available on GOG first, or GOG Galaxy will show up first, or they will both show up at the same time, but it would seem that they've already confirmed your wish to be true either way. :) I agree with your sentiments about Steam and the OSS community as well. :)

The Steam overlay can be used on Non-Steam games as well actually (long as they are added as such on Steam). Doesn't change the voice chat thing though :)
Will Galaxy setup DOSBox servers for multiplayer gaming too? Or just newer titles?

PlayOnLinux is a fasntic frontend/launcher with most of the biggest sellers on gog.com pre configured. I've played from crysis to infernal and back to dark seed on it without much problems.

So options exist for that while you wait.

Thraka: Will Galaxy setup DOSBox servers for multiplayer gaming too? Or just newer titles?
Answer is currently unknown. Seven Cities of Gold does have a .info file which seems to be Galaxy oriented, but it has no multiplayer at all. Quite possible that DOSBox multiplayer will be supported by Galaxy, but not guaranteed.
