Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

pbnjoe: Really looking forward to this; this'll allow me to totally cut ties to steam, yet not cut ties with all my steam-only friends! :D

That doesn't seem to do anything that just going to gog.com/galaxy doesn't... Are the Galaxy beta and the WAG beta signups one and the same? I'm excited and wanna try this :)
avatar
BKGaming: Yea apparently WAG will be the first game to fully support Galaxy, so it will likely release beta when WAG beta starts. I however want to try it more for my GOG games I have now... as an updater and library for keeping my games in order. So I'd rather get a beta before WAG.
Yeah. I want it now too for the same reasons.
i just hope with the gog galaxy client i'm able to start just one client, adding all my steam games in, so the steam client can be minimize (running in the background), adding all my non-goggalaxy games to the libary and connect all my games with social features,..etc...

how awesome it would be to get that way some custome made user archivments for all games on the world! O_o
GOG needs to really clarify this whole "support Galaxy" and "cross-play" thing. Does Galaxy allow "cross-play" with arbitrary games or do they developers have to support it? Do the games need to ALSO have a GOG version? Who implements "cross-play" support? Will Galaxy support downloading and/or installing and/or autoupdating the entire GOG library on day one? If so will the developers and/or publishers have to cooperate for that goal to be achieved? Etc
Thank you, GOG! I like the idea of automatic updates and hope there will be more new games. Now even the lazy people don't have an excuse not to buy on GOG :-)

Raptr has been doing just that for years already I think. It's the matchmaking that would make it unique.
It'd be really awesome if the client could sync game progress / saves over different machines / platforms.

Same. I want to test if I'd be able to download and install my GOG games, the way I'd like to.

Shendue: I really hope it doesnt' turn out that way, but i have bad feelings about it.
"Don't center on your anxieties, Obi-Wan. Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs."

Shendue: Also, "client" has "online check coming soon" written all over it.
I guess the Slippery Slope is not a fallacy, it's a way of life. Please, by all means, tell us what other nefarious visions of the future you can conjure up in your darkest fantasies...

Shendue: I don't give a capital F about achievements (...)
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with this vital piece of information. As you might have noticed - this thread is full of people telling others about the things they VERY VERY MUCH do not care about.
OPEN SOURCE!!! OPEN SOURCE!!! OPEN SOURCE!!!

Seriously, put Galaxy up on Github and let us go at it. Seeing how far the mod community has taken old games like Doom far beyond the DOS days, I think it would be worth investigating. I know I'd be willing to throw some code at it. With Linux support on the horizon, you might even earn points with the FOSS community over Steam, especially with the commitment to DRM-Free games. I think it would also help assuage some of the "GOG going DRM" fears that are popping up with this announcement.
I'm really looking forward to this. A client which allows me basically to do anything but doesn't force anything on me.

Not in the mood to chat with your friends or internet is down? No problem just start the game out of your folder like in the old days. Great!

But I really hope we get some more infos on it soon...allegations and panic is rising already...^^

Erich_Zann: So I can safely ignore this, and nothing will change for me as far as using GOG goes, right ?
That would be rad.
avatar
Fallen_Zen: Yes, you will be able to use GOG.com just as you use it now.
Will currently downloaded/installed games be able to be plugged into our Galaxy install, or will we need to re-download and install the games through Galaxy (due to different folder structures, etc...).

Also, will we be able to download to one directory and install in another? My primary drive is SSD, so I don't have a lot of space. So games are installed on the SSD but the installers are backed up on my secondary HDD.

I don't know why but it seems to me not right .....

First the automatically update - change their polecy to semi drm then to no drm and update all games into not drm and make them connect with steam polecy or any other online distributor without our knowing

Personally why I use gog is because I play single games in very unaccecible areas in the world - in 2012 in gobi desert

now in 2014 in sahara desert at the algerian border with south morroco

I get online sometimes in a small vilage with a bad 3g card ....

for me it is impossble to play a game with internet connection...

I think they try to see how we gona react to their idea but it looks like they are going to step away ftom the totally drm free gaming

the gog power community was based on this drm free concept

by movin from ith they gona loose all their credibility

but I am not judging them now - time will judge on time ...
Can not wait for GOG Galaxy, sounds awesome!
Keep up the good work guys, you are simply the best!

They explicitly stated that the client will be optional, so there is no need to be concerned: you will be able to keep on playing your games without any need for Internet access :)
