Freedom of choice. Optional client. Cross-play. Coming soon to all gamers!

Earlier today (or was it yesterday for you?), during the [url=http://www.gog.com/news/cd_projekt_red_gogcom_summer_conference]CD Projekt RED and GOG.com’s Summer Conference we dropped the news about our next big step forward! GOG.com has always been home to more and more of the the best games in history (for Windows and Mac), both classic and new. Differing in shapes, flavors, and sizes they had one thing in common: they were mostly single-player, and our focus was mainly on the experience of a singular gamer. If that's your thing, nothing really will change. You can always enjoy your favorite games 100% DRM-free on GOG.com, with no need to activate your game online or remain connected to play your single-player title. Just like GOG.com has always been about.. But what if you want to play with your friends?

Today we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform that will finally provide the GOG.com community with the easy option to play together online. GOG Galaxy will allow you to share your achievements, stay in touch with your pals and get the updates for your games automatically. We've developed this technology to improve your GOG.com experience. We think GOG Galaxy really deserves your attention and we hope many of you will give it a try! But, here's the great thing: it is totally optional, so it's all up to you! If you do not want to play online, or use our optional client to access these features, then no worries, you will always be able to play the single-player mode 100% DRM-free, and download manually the latest updated version of your favorite title from our website. Now, for one more feature we call cross-play. We always believed in an open world for gamers, with no obligation to be tied to a specific platform or client; and this is why GOG Galaxy will allow gamers to play with their buddies who use Steam, without any need to use any 3rd party client or account, nothing, nada. We’re taking care of connecting GOG.com and Steam players, so just sit back, relax and give it a try.

See the outtake from the CD Projekt RED & GOG.com Summer Conference

Talking of which, we are proud to announce the soon-to-come launch of the beta phase for The Witcher Adventure Game, a faithful adaptation of the board game of the same title. It allows up to 4 players to play together, whether they use Steam or GOG.com. Cross-play at its finest! If you wanna get the chance to try it out, please visit and sign up to get in the queue for your beta access key. You can also simply take advantage of our amazing [url=http://www.gog.com/tw3]pre-order offer for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which includes 2 beta access keys for he Witcher Aventure Game, delivered to you as soon as we start handing them out to public.

We believe GOG Galaxy has the power to provide the best of both worlds. Playing the single player mode of your favorite game, 100% DRM-free, while still having the OPTION to use our soon-to-come client for an enhanced experience (auto-patching, achievements, and much more) or play online with other GOG.com (and Steam) players if you so wish.

There will be more GOG Galaxy titles coming up this year, so stay tuned for more news and get the word around!

Just as a clarification: in the future you can only play single-player games without GOG Galaxy, but in order to play multiplayer you need to be using GOG Galaxy -- no LAN-play, no direct-IP connections, nothing like that?

That's how the announcement reads, but I am giving them the benefit of doubt in that that they fucked up the announcement again and instead mean for it to read that it's in addition to LAN-play and the likes, not a replacement.

JudasIscariot: 1. No deal is being made, instead we're giving you the chance to play with others like it used to be before digital distribution :) Remember when you popped in a multiplayer game like Quake and then just surfed the servers without a third party app? Galaxy is kind of like that :)
avatar
amok: sooo... how are you doing that? do you expect Galaxy players of for example Brutal Legend to suddenly be able to play MP with the Steamworks version of Brutal Legend?
Yes, that's exactly it :)

Mandy: Hi there John, it's Mandy.
John: What's up, Mandy?
Mandy: I just collected all 4 rings in the third stage of Umma Bodeka Quest in less than one minute.
John. Um, plus one, I guess.
Mandy: Bye!

Erich_Zann: I guess either my use of brackets is off, or the rules are different in english.
I speak for myself, but i think your use of brackets is absolutely correct and easily understandeable. Maybe if people would read sentences and maybe understand them before going all "OMFG THIS OLD DUMBASS FAG DOESN'T LIKE THE ALMIGHTY 733T ONLINE SHARING OF ACHIEVEMENTS TO SHOW FRIENDS HOW FUCKING COOL YOU ARE AT PLAYING GAMES, THE POOR IDIOT, I'M GONNA MAKE A SALTY IRONIC COMMENT TO PUBLICLY RIDICULIZE HIM", they could actually answer with something that makes sense.
Also, the fact that people are giving positive ratings to the comment without even reading the original sentence scares me. Is people so dumb that they "thumb up" mindlessly any joke without even checking if it makes any sense before? Meh.

Got a deal with Steam?
My question , will existing gog games have to be modified in order to work with galaxy features such as achievements for games example ?
who have will to do the work of getting the game to work with galaxy features ? devs or gog staff?

The way I understood it is as follows.
If a game (currently) doesn't require GOG Galaxy, it will continue not requiring it in the future. Be that for Single Player, LAN play, Direct Connect or Central Server.
If a game currently doesn't support any of those methods, it may support them in the future through GOG Galaxy.

Any new game developed with GOG Galaxy in mind will behave as their developer wishes to. It may use GOG Galaxy or it may not. If they decide that the only multiplayer is through GOG Galaxy, then it's similar to them deciding that the only multiplayer will be through Gamespy. If they decide to allow multiplayer both through GOG Galaxy and without it, then GOG Galaxy is optional, but may be optimal, depending on what other options there are.

Speculation at this point though.

Yes

Both? Neither? Whoever bothers to? All valid answers, depending on the game in question.

This seems to be the miracle part they're going for right now. It's going to be interesting to see if they can manage that, and more importantly, if Valve doesn't like it, if they can't simply make some changes to the API to undo it if need be. (assuming it's in any way done like that).

That or some separate multiplayer network that can mesh with the Steamworks network? Hmm. Not only that but Steamworks games that use Steamworks for Multiplayer most of the time don't have DRM-free versions, so which games would this be relevant for except maybe upcoming Galaxy designed games?

MaceyNeil: GOG is going down a road i cannot follow and i am someone who will take my business elsewhere if i even smell the hint of DRM being forced down our collective throats.

Offering someone a meal then saying to them, but you can't eat it unless you allow us to barcode you and put you through some camp with a bunch of jews, but it's your choice is NOT actually a choice wether or not you still have a plate you really don't care about.

If you get what i mean.
Wowza.
This is great news ! I look forward to it. :D
I actually don't know if i should get this news as good or bad. It can be both, actually, depending on how it's implemented.
I like the fact that you are keeping it optional, but if it becomes the standard for multiplayer on GOG and developers that publish on GOG ask for their games to exclusively have multiplayer on it, that "freedom of choice" would become something more in the lines of "you can choose to play online with GOG Galaxy or not playing online at all and have castrated features", which doesn't sound like freedom of choice at all. I really hope it doesnt' turn out that way, but i have bad feelings about it. Also, "client" has "online check coming soon" written all over it.

I also have a couple specific questions:

- I assume this will finally allow people to share their own game libraries with friends, wouldn't it? I don't give a capital F about achievements, but sharing the libraries is pretty interesting and may allow people to find games they may be interested in just by looking at the libraries of friends that have similar tastes in gaming. More important, will it allow to share WISHLISTS with friends, so they know what to gift me for my birthday? (I don't even understand why those basic features weren't implemented yet, client or not).

- Will the client allow multiplayer for some old games that lack the feature at the moment? URU, maybe?

Really looking forward to this; this'll allow me to totally cut ties to steam, yet not cut ties with all my steam-only friends! :D

That doesn't seem to do anything that just going to gog.com/galaxy doesn't... Are the Galaxy beta and the WAG beta signups one and the same? I'm excited and wanna try this :)

timppu: I personally care about the DRM-free part only for single-player, as that is where it matters. Online multiplayer part will most probably anyway become inactive at that point when the game authentication isn't possible anyway, so in practice it normally won't matter much either way, even if the multiplayer part was also fully DRM-free.
I'm pretty much of the same opinion but if you declare something 100% DRM-free as gog did in "we are excited to announce GOG Galaxy, a truly gamer-friendly, 100% DRM-free online gaming platform" it should be 100% DRM-free.

Yea apparently WAG will be the first game to fully support Galaxy, so it will likely release beta when WAG beta starts. I however want to try it more for my GOG games I have now... as an updater and library for keeping my games in order. So I'd rather get a beta before WAG.
