The Dark Vally / Das finstere Tal

Austrian movie with a bit of German co-production. It's a modern and somewhat unconventional take on the Western genre, set in the Austrian Alps during the late 19th century, starring Sam Riley. The title fits the mood perfectly: Dark, gritty, cold and depressing. But be warned: The language is German with a more or less strong Tyrolean dialect, so you might have some trouble understanding all the dialog. The Blu-ray has German subtitles, though. Highly recommended!

Severance

If you like British cinema and its typical black, cynical humor, you might enjoy this one. It's about a group of office clerks going on a works outing into the woods. Naturally it ends in bloodshed. :D

Angel-A

A French movie about a small-time criminal who meets an angel.

La Haine

Well, I bet you've already seen it. If not: Shame on you. ;)

Yes, I've seen it. :)

Angel-A is on my list of movies to check out, haven't heard of the other two though, thanks!

awalterj: I said to myself "fuck the ramen master..." and went for the pork slices right away. Even if my approach is less ritualized and sophisticated, I've become passionate about ramen in real life.
You took a dive, apparently; master would be proud, he promotes curiosity. You don't rrraack discepreene, my young apprentice. You're just another ingredient in the fabulous goemonburo of life, so make sure the fire's alwatys hot.
As for me, ramen instantly reminds me of Pitagora Suitchi and there's no turning back.

Watch out for the sodium levels on your average Idontliveinjapan ramen, my friend.

Peace! ;)

Taxi Teheran

Film director Jafar Panahi has been banned by the Iranian government from making any movies but he doesn't care and has already made 3 movies since. In Taxi Teheran, he plays himself and filmed the entire movie from inside a taxi.
His films are smuggled out of Iran on USB sticks hidden inside birthday cakes and that's how we get to see his work.

You are right, the sodium levels of instant ramen (available worldwide) is through the roof bad - which is why I kept flying back to Japan to get my real ramen fix until I ran out of money so I was forced to forego ramen entirely in the last couple years. It's been tough but I'm hanging in there.

Have you seen Lives of Others? That's a really good one.
Another great one is The Intouchables.

And if you're looking into something a bit more out of the box, check out some of the old Czech classics, in particular these: Closely Watched Trains, Kolya, The Elementary School, and The Dark Blue World. If you're after something a little more obscure, then The Cremator is a good one too.

So when do you bring these krasny movies to GOG? Most have German dubbing, but are unavailable for purchase (which makes it uninteresting to most people).

Oh, and some recommendations:

Bloody Christmas (full video)
Antonia's Line
The Last Chance
The Bear
Die rote Jacke
Show me Love
Film without a Name
Der Mungo
Northern Skirts / Nordrand
As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me
Bass in Contra
I hadn't noticed that the thread was added to in December, thanks for all the new suggestions!

PaterAlf: Have you seen Finsterworld? It was one of the best German movies in years.
I haven't had the chance to watch a lot of the movies suggested in here yet, but I did watch Fish Story and Finsterworld recently. Thanks for recommending those, Telika and PaterAlf! Fish Story was cool, and Finsterworld was very interesting as well, even though I'm not quite sure what to think of it on the whole. But it was worth watching.

I bookmarked this thread. Lots of wonderful suggestions!

As a Bresson fan, I could recommend all of his films but especially A Man Escaped (1956), Pickpocket (1959), Au hasard Balthazar (1966), Mouchette (1967) & L'argent (1983). Even if you have watched some of them before, these are the films that one should watch again! :)

And here are some recent films that I liked a lot:

- The Duke of Burgundy (Peter Strickland, 2014)
- Shell (Scott Graham, 2012)
- 1001 Gram (Bent Hamer, 2014)
- Hitchcock/Truffaut (Kent Jones, 2015) (Documentary)
- Mon Roi (Maïwenn, 2015)
- Listen to Me Marlon (Stevan Riley, 2015) (Documentary)
- Fúsi (Dagur Kári, 2015)
- L'ombre des femmes (Philippe Garrel, 2015)
- Clouds of Sils Maria (Olivier Assayas, 2014)
- Force Majeure (Ruben Östlund, 2014)

Swedish: Låt den rätte komma in (Let the Right One In).
One of the better horror\thriller movies I've seen.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1139797/

Russian: The Story of Voyages.
At first glance, it might be seen as a fairy-tale\fantasy aimed for younger audience, but it's actually quite dark and dramatic fantasy movie.

Daulmakan: Fack ju Göhte
You watched that and liked it? Curious. It was very successful in Germany but I wouldn't have thought it to be of interest to anyone abroad. Frankly, I don't even understand why it was successful over here, I thought it was an average TV movie with a very predictable run-of-the-mill script and a few lukewarm jokes, nothing more.

Lots of good suggestions on your list though, otherwise. A few of them, I've watched already, will look into the others.

Again, thanks everyone for the continuing suggestions! :)
