What are some great, top-rated or personal favorite movies that I might not have seen yet?

I take any suggestions but try to name some that aren't all that well known all around the world to increase the chance that I might not have heard about them yet. Brownie points if you can recommend some from different countries than the US, like what are the best movies that your (non-US) country has to offer, in your opinion?

Basically like those "Best movies you haven't watched yet" lists, with an international touch. If you want, you can also name some that are well known if you think they're a must see that might have slipped my radar nevertheless. My go to genres are indie / screwball comedies, drama, mystery, coming of age stories, just to give you a first hint of what I might like and what I might have ignored so far. Still, with a good and engaging movie it shouldn't matter all that much what genre it's in or what it's about.

Ones I've enjoyed:

The Man without a Past (Mies vailla menneisyyttä, Der Mann ohne Vergangenheit) - Very sweet, in places very surreal comedy/drama.

Young & Beautiful (Jeune & Jolie, Jung & Schön) - The marketing likes to portray this as some kind of erotic film, but it's got all of 3-4 very short sex scenes - it's actually a very affecting drama.

I also recommend the Danish "Afdeling Q" movies, of which three of the books have been filmed to date, all of which are available in Germany (Erbarmen, Schändung, Erlösung), although the third isn't out on DVD/Bluray yet.

Obviously the Swedish Millennium trilogy if you haven't already seen it - David Fincher's refilming of the first book is good, but obviously that particular trilogy is likely to remain incomplete.

International ? I'm a bit confused because I thought that movies (and fave movie lists) were, by default, international.

But I may add a few french ones. Like :

Bertrand Tavernier's Coup de Torchon, a brilliantly disturbing transposition of Jim Thompson's "Pop. 1280" to colonial Africa, with a brilliant cast, soundtrack and cinematography.

Jean Girault's La Soupe aux Choux. A popular adaptation of René Fallet's novel.

Alain Resnay's Mon Oncle d'Amérique, a weird essay on human ethology with interventions by Henri Laborit.

René Laloux' Les maîtres du temps, a technically clunky but graphically gorgeous scifi animation based on Moebius drawings (and a forgettable Stephan Wul novel).

Basically anything involving Agnès Jaoui and/or Jean-Pierre Bacri, but above all the cinemy adaptations of their devastatingly cynical and accurate theatrical plays, like Cuisine et Dépendances or Un air de famille.

A bunch of Henri Verneuil films, but maybe Le corps de mon ennemi in particular.

Le cave se rebiffe as my favorite old noir comedy, a lovely loose adaptation of Simonin with Audiard dialogues served by perfect Gabin, Blier, Rosay delivery.

Costa-Gavras' epic adaptation of Vassikilos' Z, a historical political thriller about the murder of Lambrakis and the birth of the greek Junta.

Jeunet and Caro's Delicatessen or La cité des enfants perdus, because they are never better than when they work together.

Jean Yanne's Tout le monde il est beau tout le monde il est gentil, featuring the most epic rant ever about the distinction between rudeness and vulgarity.

Louis Malle's Zazie dand le métro, a surprisingly perfect adaptation of Queneau's classic with a life of its own.

George Lautner's Laisse aller c'est une valse, a surreal comedy of, well, love, friendship, and massive clownesque gunfights, typical of (the best) films of that era but with a touch more heart.

No I shouldn't. Because :

Robert Enrico's Boulevard du Rhum is a crazy movie about a rum-runner falling in love with a cinema star. It's a collection of unforgettable sequences, with an unforgettable music by François de Roubaix (of Chapi-chapo fame, pour les connoisseurs). We also owe Enrico the very different Le Secret, a slightly cheesy, melancholic political thriller à la Verneuil (typical of the era's paranoia), with a very striking, haunting Morricone soundtrack. The plot is predictible, but the character study and actor performances (Trintignant, Noiret, Jobert) largely compensate for it.

I've only seen the first one, will look into the others, thanks! There are very few serial killer / crime stories that engage me, so I haven't read the Afdeling Q and Millenium books or watched the movies, but I might give them a try. Just a clumsy way to try and get more non-US recommendation while not excluding US movies either (usually they dominate such lists, and it's more likely that I already know them). What do you think would be a better way to put it? Can't name it "foreign language movies" either because that's relative and at the same time restricting. And if I say "non-US" many people that would have recommended US movies might not even open the thread but I want their suggestions, too. So in a way, it's kind of intended that the title is just as universal as meaningless. ;)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions! Of the ones you list here, I think I don't know any but Jeunet and Caro's films and Zazi dans le métro. I'll look into the others!

Fish Story seems to be available at the local library, so I'll start with that. :)

I've already watched Troll Hunter (only just last week actually! :D), Le scaphandre et le papillon, La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano, El labirinto del fauno, but good suggestions nevertheless, I liked all of them. I'll make a note of the others I don't know yet.

I've already watched this, too, but only halfway, IIRC. I was a bit disappointed with the adaptation of the graphic novel which I thought superior, and watching this movie afterwards felt kind of redundant, but it might be different if you don't know the source material.
