I never realized ToD had such a polarizing reception. Personally I can't decide whether it or Last Crusade is my favorite.
If I may, why do you think you can't watch it? Is it the darker tone? The 007-y beginning of the film?

I hope it isn't worse than the last film, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. I think the last film is the worst one in the series. Temple of Doom has at least a certain charm of its own.

I just think it is a tacky pile of rubbish. I greatly enjoyed the other two movies however.

Right. Luckily, because I enjoy the film a lot, I can't relate to that at all :) But I'm not totally surprised, because it really does have a totally different feel compared to the other films. My best friend also loves the other two but despises ToD, however his reason I think comes from a religious objection to the satanic elements.

I never grew up with Indiana Jones.

The first time I fully watched Raiders was 6-8 years ago.

The closet thing to Indiana Jones I did grew up with was The Mummy movies.
