"Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead."

Lovecraft's Untold Stories is now available In Development, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The decidedly horrendous bestiary of the Cthulhu mythos is on the prowl and it falls on you to try and contain this madness. Pick your character out of 5 different options (2 during In Development), drive yourself mad with power, and try to make your way through randomly generated levels filled with clues, enigmatic NPCs, and abominable bosses. Will you try to outsmart the cultists by gathering information or take them out with smart use of your ever-growing firepower?

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.
This game doesn't seem to feature any particular focus on the erotic, but since some have mentioned the alien tiddies: There are definite sexual elements in some of Lovecraft's stories - The Dunwich Horror for example. And subsequent authors have further explored the horror of sexual congress between humans and the grotesque beings of the Mythos.

Besides which, the female being is clearly based on the works of H. R. Giger - which I'd guess is most likely an attempt to increase the visual diversity of the game by incorporating compatible elements.

I haven't read it yet, but this one's on my reading list:

gamesfreak64: Dark Seed and Dark Seed II also contains Giger art, or at least it looks like it.
I haven't played them, but they look interesting, and I'd like to see both on GOG.

Crosmando: ...makes me hate public domain. The absolute balls it must take to call your game "Lovecraft's Untold Stories"...
Copyright is no guarantee of quality, as countless examples have shown us. One of the great things about the Mythos is that anyone is free to explore it and produce works based on it - there is a tremendous wealth of material to enjoy or ignore as we please.

But yeah, I don't like that title either, and I get what you're saying about it.

Starmaker: Read "Sex and the Cthulhu Mythos".
Thanks for suggestion, but somehow I doubt that it will be very enlightening read.
Something tells me author may have some biases.

Beside I've read Lovecraft's works to understand that there is no sex in it.
Dude struggles to describe simple marriage relationships.

As a side note: It's kind of sign of good horror
"Don't bring your erection in it"
"Well, the rituals they performed in those hills were really rather tame, you see. Just some chanting and such, then poof - pregnant. Actually, no, that's too much... Poof, then baby. All rather humdrum."

:P

But seriously, horror has a long tradition of erotic elements. Not that it's necessary for all types of horror, but it's far from unusual.

And again, not seeing it as a focus of this game in the trailer or screenshots.

SeduceMePlz: But seriously, horror has a long tradition of erotic elements.
I would love to hear good examples.

If someone wishes to bring Giger again...
My counterargument is: His works is horror FOR YOU, but are you sure it was horror for Giger (God rest his soul)?

Sex in horror...
So why trope "Death by Sex" exists? :)

I understand that future game is not about that.

To clarify:
I don't mind that lady on promotional banner, because:
a) it gorgeous art
b) Lovecraft has creature like that in his "the Horror of Red Hook"

Mostly curious why she takes 50% of that promo? :)

So very many... To use the most popular example, the vampire is horrifying yet has come to possess an undeniable eroticism in popular imagination.

Even cheap slashers often include lurid sex scenes to titillate the audience before shocking them with gruesome kills.

I don't have much time - I'm getting ready for work - so that'll have to suffice for now.

One can be both horrified and turned on - and that can actually be part of the horror of the siutation. ;)

Also, to be clear, I'm not trying to attack you or expecting you to change your mind. Just as a long time fan of horror in general, I felt inclined to provided the counterpoint. :)

Oh, yay, a pixel-art roguelike, what an amazingly original and not at all cheap or trite concept.

Nothing here shows me any genuine understanding of Lovecraft's work. If any mythos is set up specifically for deliberate, linear level design and acompanying storytelling it's this one, but I guess actual design would be too much work.

The writing in that 'corpse' screenshot is atrocious too.

The complete misuse of Lovecraft continues...

I'm in an awful mood tonight. Let's go.

- Zillionth indie game based on the works of H.P. Lovecraft (and not the countless other interesting things in the public domain that one could leech off of) = Check.
- Title that might (intentionally or otherwise) cause confusion with another game (Stories Untold) = One half a check for at least not calling this "Dagon Souls"
- Legitimately good banner artwork (awkward attempt at sex appeal aside). Actual in-game graphics are more fake pixel art nonsense that clearly didn't see as much effort = A very disgruntled Check
- Indie rogue-like-like number #4386 = Check
- Indie rogue-like-like based on H.P. Lovecraft #11 = Check

Whatever. I know GOG actually has a vetting team and that things are still drastically worse on Steam in terms of quality control, but this kind of mulch still slowly kills my enthusiasm for video games. Like it doesn't make me angry, but it still depresses me.

EDIT:
- Game isn't even a finished product. Still in development and the devs expect me to pay them, for the privelege of being one of their alpha testers = Go to hell.

andysheets1975: As much a fan of Lovecraft's work as I am, I'm pretty sick of seeing Cthulhu crap everywhere.
avatar
DaveMongoose: I couldn't agree more! Perversely, it was the "Cthulhu crap" that first led me to read Lovecraft because I never felt like I "got the joke", but I've since come to the conclusion that it's just a meme to the majority of people.

... but I suppose an authentic Lovecraft video game would be quite unsatisfying to play because you'd only see the monster once (if at all) and then either get killed, go mad, or discover that you're descended from it (or all of the above).
This game was my daily"raise from Earth to heaven, fall down to hell" :), but not staying close to a theme doesn't force the game to be bad, from what i read and see it will be pixelart, low story, low rpg..that let the game down.
Still...it's unfinished, so lets wait, meabe they even make a demo.

Aside from this...Cthulhu, Lord of the rings and other "great" themes are often based on old myths,storys&thems..mixed up&reworked in a creative way ;)

Give Cultist Simulator and Sunless Sea a try, they're much closer to Cthulhu..even itf they're far from being perfect.

I've played both and really enjoyed them. My main problem with this game is that it calls itself 'Lovecraft's Untold Stories' when it's so far from what an actual Lovecraft story is.

Well, people enjoyed "Bram Stoker's Dracula"...
avatar
DaveMongoose: It really disappoints me that so many games (and other bits of geek culture) misuse "Lovecraft" so much.

The core of Lovecraft's writing was the insignificance and futility of human existence in the uncaring, unknowable vastness of the universe, not "Cultists, Tentacles, and Cthulhu - Oh my!". Give a shotgun to a Lovecraft protagonist and he's most likely to shoot himself...

On top of that, the writing shown in the screenshots is pretty awful. You really don't deserve to slap Lovecraft's name on your game if the best you can come up with is a "hard bitten Private Eye" who is "tough, straight talking and has a keen eye for facts and targets", and you're fine including awkward lines like "The corpse of one of a member of one of the secret societies".

I mean it is 'untold' so ;)
Oh my, the number of Lovecraft elitists in this thread is simply astonishing.
Are we talking about the same Lovecraft who was too lazy to do any research and therefore was just putting random smart-sounding names to make his stories sound much smarter than they actually were?
Are we talking about the same Lovecraft whos half of the stories has such horror in them that is simply indescribable? G R E A T W R I T I N G
The same "Lovecraft no sex in Cthulhu Mythos" who wrote about women being impregnated by A COSMIC ENTITY?
"Protagonists would rather blow their heads off with a shotgun than fight anything" in stories that show how modern (for that time) technology helped humans win against the untold horrors? The motive of most Old Ones stories aren't about how humans cannot win; it's about both humanity winning is futile for the universe AND that humans - knowing this - will still fight; even if the fight is pointless; because that's in our nature.

reative00: The same "Lovecraft no sex in Cthulhu Mythos" who wrote about women being impregnated by A COSMIC ENTITY?
I assume you're referencing The Dunwich Horror? Firstly that's only one woman, and the act is heavily implied but not described and certainly not sexualised.

I have no idea what you're talking about here... are you sure you're talking about Lovecraft? There is no Lovecraft story where the protagonists "win", with the possible exception of The Dunwich Horror (again); but even in that story the protagonist uses dark magic not technology.

Perhaps in the wider "Cthulhu Mythos", but then that's not Lovecraft.
Guys, if you haven't done it, you absolutely must read the Neonomicon and Providence comics by Alan Moore and Jacen Burrows. Especially Neonomicon is a masterpiece that updates the works of Lovecraft without modifying them, but rather showing the "unspoken" of the original stories. I warn you that it is rather disturbing.
