"Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead."

Lovecraft's Untold Stories is now available In Development, DRM-free on GOG.com.
The decidedly horrendous bestiary of the Cthulhu mythos is on the prowl and it falls on you to try and contain this madness. Pick your character out of 5 different options (2 during In Development), drive yourself mad with power, and try to make your way through randomly generated levels filled with clues, enigmatic NPCs, and abominable bosses. Will you try to outsmart the cultists by gathering information or take them out with smart use of your ever-growing firepower?

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.
Game definitely got my attention, it seems to have the atmosphere... but pixel art graphics?
Well, I will probably wait till it´s finished and then I will see.
I wonder if this is already playable. If yes, how much of it and when is the final release planned. Not enough information to buy now for me. I remember when Foxtail (also InDev) has been advertized here on GOG the devs were here (they still are visiting the forums quite often) and answered every one of those questions. They also included some of them on the gamepage. Maybe I am just blind but I could not find answers to these questions on the gamecard of this game.

DaveMongoose: It really disappoints me that so many games (and other bits of geek culture) misuse "Lovecraft" so much

andysheets1975: As much a fan of Lovecraft's work as I am, I'm pretty sick of seeing Cthulhu crap everywhere. (Not quite as sick of Lovecraft rip-offs as stuff ripping off George Romero movies, but getting there.) There are many other great horror writers out there and some of them are more well-suited to video games (e.g., Robert E. Howard wrote great horror stories and...his protagonists actually fight back!).

I kind of regret buying that Cthulhu plush toy back in like 2001...
I've been wondering about making a game out of Howard's Sailor Costigan stories. They are not horror, but comedic boxing storirs and would be as such very well suited for a tongue in cheek action game.
Hm, mixed feelings... Good to see some ( potentially ) good Horror games, especially with a Lovecraft theme. On the other hand, the quality and style so far are a mixed bag, and the graphics in particular suffer from the usual style inconsistencies which are so common in modern Indie games. And as others already pointed out, their interpretation of Lovecraft's work is rather questionable. I'm not sure if the theme is well suited for a fast-paced Action game, unless they're simply using Lovecraft's creations as a replacement for zombies, nazis, aliens and the other usual suspects, while completely ignoring what sets Lovecraft's work apart from those common genre tropes.

I guess personally I'd rather see a more slow-paced, atmospheric game, with emphasis on puzzles, story, and some action/fighting on the side. Kind of like the first few hours of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth ( bring that one back GOG, will ya? ). Will still keep an eye on this game and might try it when it's finished.

Agree with that. And with the rest of your post.
For now - wishlisted, but only to keep an eye on it. I hope you, guys, are going to play first and let me if it's worth to spend a few dollars and hours ;)

Yeah, that would be great! Howard has a similar problem to Lovecraft in that people adapting his work usually just stick to the basic surface elements - "muscley barbarian guy, hot chick, skimpy clothes, chop up stuff with swords, BOOM! DONE!" and most of the time they're mainly referencing the Arnold movies anyway. It's frustrating.
I'll be waiting.

Way too early to buy in just yet, but this looks VERY promising.
Thank you.
But why do we have to visit the Steam forum for a game GOG is advertizing. Why can't I find the inormation here where it was advertized?

not if i have to listen to that clomping foot sound byte the whole game
high rated
Shit like this makes me hate public domain. The absolute balls it must take to call your game "Lovecraft's Untold Stories". One day someone is going to create an official Lord of the Rings game full of Legolas x Aragorn gay romance plots and call it "Tolkien's Untold Stories" theres nothing we'll be able to do about it.

I am interested. I have read every tale Lovecraft has written since he was a child. I would have preferred an original IP. I'm in for a dark "pixelated" roguelike.

Well, I guess we'll be able to ignore it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I see your point -- Maybe the authors of such work shouldn't use the names of the original creators, especially when they interpret the original material in rather... creative ways. Still, I don't mind if we have to endure/ignore a few bad releases based on classics, if it means there's a chance we'll see some truly good ones.

DaveMongoose: I suppose an authentic Lovecraft video game would be quite unsatisfying to play because you'd only see the monster once (if at all) and then either get killed, go mad, or discover that you're descended from it (or all of the above).
If you’ve not yet played Darkest Dungeon through the end, well, you should ;)
(base game is enough, DLCs are mostly for people like me who still want even more after a full playthrough)

BEWARE, A SPOILER LIES BELOW!

Darkest Dungeon end is in the "all of the above" category ;)

VondhamB: Tits in Lovecraft?... Odd, to say the least.
Read "Sex and the Cthulhu Mythos".
