Let's get physical

Exanima, the dark isometric RPG armed with a unique, physics-based combat system, is available now, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 15% launch discount.

You find yourself in a dark dungeon full of dangers shambling out of the shadows. You feel powerless, defenseless, alone. In order to survive, you'll need to grab a weapon and quickly familiarize yourself with Exanima's innovative combat system, which requires your undivided attention and adaptation to its dynamic flow. Every hit has it's own weight, angle, momentum, and impact.
The unconventional mechanics are being constantly refined and polished but Bare Mettle also aim to keep adding new content: complex NPC interactions, ranged and magic-based combat, additional encounters, items, and environments. After having successfully gone through the game's alpha and beta stages, they hope to release this compelling low-fantasy RPG within six to nine months, but as we all know the development process is full of emergent challenges, much like Exanima's core gameplay.

Learn to survive the dungeons by mastering the unique combat mechanics of Exanima, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 15% discount will last until May 23, 12:59 PM UTC.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

brandrixco: Then what is your point exactly?
I made my point plain. And using words like "everyone" and "proof" will get you nowhere.
avatar
brandrixco: Then what is your point exactly? Everyone has given you solid arguments and actual proof and you show none yourself. Find me an ISO game that has what I mentioned before. Fully interactive objects that can be moved, rotated, placed, but has the character actually physically moving them.
Dude, let it go. Arguing with Hickory is an exercise in futility.

Will do, but I really hoped he would have shown proof of his words. All he did was make a fool of himself.

Hickory: Then it should be pigeon holed as point-and-click, not as RPG.
I don’t see why point-and-click and RPG are mutually exclusive? Dragging and dropping things with your cursor has long been a staple of many RPGs (and other game genres) – at least in the world that I live in. If this is immersion-breaking for you, then ok, but saying that this is something totally new and outlandish, and that it conflicts with the rules of the universe and will break the space-time contiuum (that’s at least how your words make it sound to me)? Not really.

(I don’t mean to be rude, in case it sounds so. I was just surprised at the extend of your expressed horror regarding this gameplay concept.)

Stevedog13: Well color me interested! This looks like a game with lots of potential. I'd like to know more about the controls however, is it mouse only (where you need to click everywhere you want to go) or can you use the keyboard to move around and the mouse for interaction? If it's keyboard and mouse controls, are the keys remap-able? Also, the description has the bullet point "Roguelike Elements", what would that be? Random loot? Perma-death? Randomly generated dungeon layouts? If anyone who has actually played the game can give me a bit of insight into how these mechanics work I'd be most appreciative. I have been burned in the past by buying a game based on the video and description only to find out that the controls are too horrible for me to actually enjoy the game.

user404: Heyo, i will try to address some of your questions:

keyboard to move around and the mouse for interaction?
In exploration mode the intended way to move around is directing your mouse when you want to go and clicking right mouse button, although you can use WASD to walk while you perform some other action with the mouse, such like opening a door, or setting obstacles for your enemies. I say intended because there is people that move with tank controls, but that's not the easiest, faster or proper way to move.

are the keys remap-able?
Most of them yes. Main attack actions and RMB to move is not.

generated dungeon layouts?
No the levels are carefully handcrafted and tell an history by themselves.

"Roguelike Elements", what would that be?
It is a Dungeon crawler, there is some fantasy, and dying can mean risking a lot of progress, specially late in the game.

Random loot?
Some unique items are not, but most of the loot is.

Perma-death
The game have one mandatory checkpoint, and also an option to activate a few early checkpoints. It is not a pure
Perma-death game, but you will likely die a lot early on while you are still getting familiar with its original and uncommon mechanics and as a said when there are no more fresh checkpoints you will loose a lot of progress if you die.
Thanks for responding. This clears up some of the game aspects. The big question I have left is whether or not I'll even like it, and that's something nobody can answer but me and my credit card.

It would be really helpful if there was a demo for this game.

In his book, pretending he's made an unassailable argument and then arrogantly refusing to explain himself further is just as good as actually being right. :P

Dude, it's an In Dev title. You have a two-week window in which you can play the game as much as you want, and still get a refund if its not doing it for you! :)

After watching the trailer, is it just me or does the movement animations look floaty? Almost looks like marionettes fighting.

apehater: ok after some exitement, i changed my mind on this. just a quote from a steam review:

"I suggest you look up Sui Generis, a concurrent project the same Developer is working on and has ripped Exanima from in an effort to garner more revenue to fund Sui Generis. The Developers never planned on Exanima, it only exists because they ran out of money, so they took a few levels from SG, plopped in an arena mode, and voila. All the original backers of SG received Exanima for free. Purchasing Exanima does not get you SG, whenever it releases."

just wait for sui generis, this game seems to be a rip-off, kinda like mgs5 gz.
avatar
Bare_Mettle: Whatever that particular reviewer's negative spin on it, we've always been perfectly transparent about this, even in this very thread. I don't know why you see anything malicious in it, or how it makes this game a "rip-off". You'll find people generally consider it great value for money, even in its current state. It is its own independent game and people happily spend hundreds of hours playing it.
Not to mention he seems to like the game now, quoted from that very page he linked:

"@Paid_Didn't_Win
The new beta update for the arena has brought me back and honestly I am torn on how to recommend the game now. This is a huge step in the right direction and a lot of my complaints/gripes in my original review were centered around the dungeon mode. Many of the whacky mechanics don't feel any where near as broken or as frustrating in the wide open spaces of the arena, and the developers acknowledging this is where the most fun lies really makes me reconsider my original stance."

So, you can say they won over him due to their efforts made in the game.

Trailer footage is more then a year old, the game has improved immensely over time.

Best game i've played in a long time.

I think they should update the available videos to give a better representation of just how good this game actually is.
Wow, after looking at some YouTube I noticed there's a freaking monster in the game. Not only that, but the arena mode looks great... especially the 'fray' battle where there's more than just two people in a free for all.

I think I'll grab this as soon as possible, instead of waiting for updates.

I would also suggest you enable the beta to get the latest updates - combat is further refined and you can zoom in closer as well as adding new content. OR you could wait for the beta to get officially added with any bugs smoothed out

Niggles: Looks interesting. But a few things. Any ranged weaponry or magic in the game?. Any form of dismemberment ?.
Can objects be thrown as weapons at the enemy?.
Ranged weapons and magic are to be added so there's a big question mark over how they are to be implemented but the devs have done such a great job of the combat and continued to refine it that it should be very interesting. Dismemberment does not exists but there is ragdoll physics - hit someone right and they get knocked over and blows have real impact

More a fan of the high fantasy 80s bikini chainmail & Conan loincloth art style than the grimdark ultrarealistic dodge the giant feet & swim the lake while wearing full plate style but I think I'll continue to follow this just out of curiosity.

Bare_Mettle: Sui Generis
Now that's a term I use on a daily basis! :P
Btw, saw a friend (who lives in France) playing Exanima. Is it really a "games in dev" game? Looks too damn complete (and awesome) to me! :)

I imagine that Exanima would be realistic in this respect, so go ahead and try it.
