i_ni: Good Lord, finally! "It is the Year of Our Lord 2754…"
And to celebrate the launch, I'm giving a fresh copy away:

Would require technical skills to extract it(anti-bot measure, sorry); do let us know when claimed.

Carradice: Some classic tropes in SF: generational starship, mutiny on board... Yet I do not recall any computer game that exploited them so far.

S_H_O_D_A_N: Alpha Centauri
Well pointed out. Sid Meier's sure mentions it as a premise, although the gameplay is focused on what happens after the ship arrives to Planet. I was wondering whether some game was focused on what happens onboard.
IIRC the manual included a story that establishes the setting and gives an account of the mutiy. It gives background on the leaders of the soon to split factions. Worth checking for those who love the game.

Also it has been years but, I think the captain was killed, and it was unclear whodunnit.

Redeemed. Thank you so much. I liked their previous games, and this one looks promising too.

P.S. Out of curiosity, what does the 2754+...+2754 mean? Is it some notation?

Firaxis published the complete background story on their old website. You can still download the rtf file from archive.org.

quote from Wikipedia:
In the months leading to the release of Alpha Centauri, multimedia producer Michael Ely wrote the 35 weekly episodes of Journey to Centauri detailing the splintering of the U.N. mission to Alpha Centauri.

Great! It's anti-bot fluff, again, with a nod to the intro.

Nice, thanks for this blast from the past! :-)

Manual (contains a meaningful excerpt from Journey to Centauri):

The manual contains a list of recommended reading. The theme and very relevant elements in the setting and in the story are heavily influenced by The Jesus Incident, by Frank Herbert. If you like the setting or good SF, it is worth checking. Other classics are mentioned, like Frank Herbert's Dune (if have not read this yet, go and fix that already!) and A Fire upon the Deep, by the great Vernor Vinge (check this and the sequel A Deepness in the Sky, which is even better). All very powerful novels detailing complex worlds and ecologies.

Out of curiosity again – what was that? :)
Looks like some hash, but I don't get it – how you decoded it?

It's the most widely used binary-to-text encoding on the net (hint: I put extra efforts to make the prominent '=' appear).
As always, it's humans vs. bot scammers; I must think of something else the next time I make a khey public ;-)
(Though if a man creates a bot clever enough then has't man the right to collect bot's riches? Hmm, something to consider in background)

Use this, for example:

to decode, using:

as the encoded text.

Thanks for the answer and for the generous gesture, of course.

Yup, thanks. Once upon a time I helped someone to convert this kind of strings to images in python; afair Google Image search results are stored like that. Congrats ;)

Let me put some additional info here (source: RPGCodex).
Depending on what's your priority – you may want to hurry up or wait 18 months for your purchase...

It's hard to believe that over five years have passed since Colony Ship had its first development update. The combat demo has been available for about a year now, but today the game reached its most important milestone yet with the Early Access release. As our readers will know, the Colony Ship Early Access build is launching with the game's first chapter, consisting of three locations. The Early Access FAQ has a detailed timetable of what will be coming next, but before I post that, here's the super cool trailer Iron Tower put together last month.

Why Early Access?
We're making this game for you, so not only your feedback matters a great deal, it's an integral part of the design process. It played a vital role when we were working on our first game (The Age of Decadence), helping us improve every aspect of the game and refine our design philosophy.

Now that Colony Ship's first chapter is ready to be evaluated, we'd like to run it by you and see what you think. What you like, what you dislike, what you think is missing or should be improved. Together we'll go through every chapter and location until the game is ready to be released.

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?
Approximately 18 months. We're planning to add improvements on a monthly basis and add new locations as follows:

Jun - Factory
Aug - Mission Control
Oct - Shuttle Bay
Feb - Habitat and the end of chapter 2
Apr - ECLSS
Jun - Heart (the mutant town)
Aug - Bridge and the end of chapter 3, all locations are done.
Nov - Endgame (chapter 4)

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?
The full version will have 4 chapters. The current Early Access version contains the first chapter, roughly 25% of the game. The game is feature-complete, so all that's missing is the content (3 remaining chapters).

What is the current state of the Early Access version?
The Early Access version includes Chapter 1, consisting of 3 locations (a container town sitting in one of the cargo holds, the armory, and hydroponics). The chapter is self-contained, inviting you to take part in a local conflict with far-reaching consequences. It's fairly well-polished and doesn't have any unfinished content.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?
We plan to gradually raise the price with each chapter.

Colony Ship Early Access is available on Steam and GOG for $25 with a 10% launch discount until next week. Buy it, play it and review it, before it gets more expensive! Additional details are available in the expanded FAQ in the game's Steam forum. You may also want to check out the currently ongoing developer livestream.
Since I just re-watched it the other day - Pandorum would be one of the better flicks dealing with the generation ship concept. In a clever and not that obvious manner (regarding its various twists, including the big one) at that, too.
