Brains required.

Project Zomboid, an open-world apocalypse-simulation of undying decisions, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 40% launch discount.

Surviving the zombie apocalypse is no brainless endeavor. There are many grey matters of grave importance that need taken care of, like building or finding a sturdy shelter, scavenging for supplies, and making sure you stay mentally and physically healthy. This doesn't mean you still won't die, though.

There have been quite a few stepping stones leading up to the current state of Project Zomboid, as developers The Indie Stone will readily admit. Having been in development for over four years now, the game has undergone a significant number of improvements and alterations but the team also wants to keep implementing ambitious features like interesting interactions with NPCs and fully-functioning vehicles, as well as a reworked UI and stealth mechanics. The team is quite happy with the game's ongoing success, so these additions are expected to hit within the year, way before the actual break of the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Make your undying wish of cleverly surviving the zombie apocalypse come true and take on Project Zomboid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 40% discount will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

anothername: That leaves the second question: The description reads like the game loves to play hardball with its players; is that an atmospheric thing or is it enforced with permadeath stuff? Above you mentioned several difficulty options, does one offer savegames for clingy carebears like me?

Loosing a char I like usually results in ragequit rather then getting entertained by it. :/

hedwards: You will die, it's not possible to win the game. The game gets more and more difficult as you play until you eventually die. It's a lot like older games in that regard.

So, whether or not it's permadeath doesn't really matter as you'd be in huge trouble anyways.
I do get the "impossible to win" but from the video description I assumed its because open world; open ended; meant to be played "forever" instead of difficulty just gets increase till you're dead :/

Maybe not the droid I was looking for; but its in development. Maybe in a year or so; I'll keep following it.

Thanks for telling how the game "ticks" :)
After playing Project Zomboid I thought to search for few mods.
That's when I learned tragic mishaps that occurred during development of this game.

First the laptops with game source got stolen from devs apartment and they didn't have a backup copy leading to major setback.
Then paypal and google pay limits their account because they were selling something that don't exist.
After that their game's alpha build get uploaded to torrents with a updater which downloads the game data from game server directly!!!

I hope everything will go well and we would see a complete game in near future.

Minor quible: The update meant to be released after 1.5d was lost when the laptops were stolen, rather than all the soruce code. They still had backups, but they were not the most current. It's not a mistake that's been repeated. It was a rather depressing event, but didn't have as much an impact as it seemed back then.
This game is great :)

I don't think they plan on "finishing" it. A game like this has near infinite things to develop, so we can get "complete" with them continuing to work on things for quite a while.

Yeah. We'll "finish" in the sense that all planned features will be in and working as intended, and then after that - as long as there are still people playing, and we get a trickle of sales to cover the costs, we'll continue to provide updates hopefully long after that "finished" build. :)
After watching a few gameplay videos, it seems like it hits the surviving a zombie apocalypse atmosphere good, but combat and inventory management looks like it's a bit cumbersome. Also, I'm not sure it would hold my interest very long.

How much or variety is there in building a fort/structure in the game? Can you fortify the interior of all ready build houses?

sort of - once you've got your carpentry skill high enough you can knock out walls and rebuild (often better ive found)...
you can also barricade windows and doors,

it dont help against zombie clumps much if you're making noise though!
I've been waiting for this to come here for some time. Can't believe I missed the promo. FML
