Brains required.

Project Zomboid, an open-world apocalypse-simulation of undying decisions, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 40% launch discount.

Surviving the zombie apocalypse is no brainless endeavor. There are many grey matters of grave importance that need taken care of, like building or finding a sturdy shelter, scavenging for supplies, and making sure you stay mentally and physically healthy. This doesn't mean you still won't die, though.

There have been quite a few stepping stones leading up to the current state of Project Zomboid, as developers The Indie Stone will readily admit. Having been in development for over four years now, the game has undergone a significant number of improvements and alterations but the team also wants to keep implementing ambitious features like interesting interactions with NPCs and fully-functioning vehicles, as well as a reworked UI and stealth mechanics. The team is quite happy with the game's ongoing success, so these additions are expected to hit within the year, way before the actual break of the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Make your undying wish of cleverly surviving the zombie apocalypse come true and take on Project Zomboid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 40% discount will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

Stream watch:

Don't miss the live showing of the game at Twitch.tv/GOGcom - the dynamite duo of Memories in 8bit and Outstarwalker are going live tonight, January 28th, at 7pm GMT / 8pm CET / 2pm EST for a multiplayer feature!
Been playing for a couple of hours already and really liking it. I remember playing an early version of the game a couple of years ago and to see how far it's come is really nice.

The sense of isolation paired with the music and general tone gives a great atmosphere as you quietly make something to eat, the rain falling outside and the moans of the undead in the distance. The interface can be a little quirky at times but that'll just take some getting used to. Looking forward to seeing what comes in the future.

Hunter65536: This is a stupid question actually, but will the Steam one be on sale as well? Also, good to see you guys here.

CaptainBinky: This sale is specifically to celebrate our launch on GOG :)
Also, thankyou <3
Ah what the hell, I'll get it. Is there a story or set objective or is it survive for as long as possible?

The objective is simply to survive - by any means necessary. There are a bunch of difficulty options in there as varying starting conditions / zombie threat, as well as a fully customisable sandbox. And for shorter game experiences we have some challenges in the game too :)

We're slowly working story elements into the game - at the moment there are a few TV and radio broadcasts which you can listen to, to fill yourself in on what's going on outside the game world, and this will become expanded upon in the future. But ultimately, there are no "victory" conditions, as it's the end of the world and there's no cure ;)

Wow, nice to see games in development finally coming to GOG!

I must say, I stopped financing games on Kickstarter because most got nowhere but the only one I truly liked and still play is Zomboid! And since the creator is personally answering questions here, I'll ask something that I'm impressed no one has asked yet.

I have backed Project Zomboid on Kickstarter and now play it on Steam because I got a key for it. However, I like GOG way way more. I actually play PZ less than I'd like to because even launching Steam makes me lazy. The obvious question then is: can I port the key to here, or would I have to buy it again? Since the dollar is currently too high for us Brazilians it would be impossible to buy it again at the moment, besides nonsensical. I don't care if you have to block my Steam access for that, though, I just want to move to GOG.

Best regards!

Err... I don't remember seeing them on Kickstarter. When was that?

TL/DR: How are save game options?

So much of this game is yelling "buy me" to me; and since you are here 1 of my two questions already got answered (some stuff I read makes it sounds like the game was already nearly abandoned, but with active community interaction + at least monthly updates as somewhere else stated I do not see that). :)

That leaves the second question: The description reads like the game loves to play hardball with its players; is that an atmospheric thing or is it enforced with permadeath stuff? Above you mentioned several difficulty options, does one offer savegames for clingy carebears like me?

Loosing a char I like usually results in ragequit rather then getting entertained by it. :/
Re: Saving

Saving is automatic. In single player, only one character can exist within a world. On death, the character itself is lost, but not their affects on the world. If you can find your corpse, you can get back your old items (though, epending on your mode of death, your body may live on and wonder away). Effectively, you just lose your skills and stats.

Users may create new characters to continue in previous worlds if their character dies.

While it's not supported in game, backing up saves and save-scumming is easy to do through your OS, as well. It's just a folder.

Very active devs. Bought.

Thanks! :)

I'll ponder about that. Life is to short for permadeath ;)

You will die, it's not possible to win the game. The game gets more and more difficult as you play until you eventually die. It's a lot like older games in that regard.

So, whether or not it's permadeath doesn't really matter as you'd be in huge trouble anyways.
Not going to purchase (unless a heavy discount happens, just 'cause I like supporting GOG), I already have Zomboid in Steam and Desura.
This game is f*cking awesome.
The best zombie game I've ever played.

What, why's everyone looking at me? I don't do it. Okay, there was that one time in Don't Starve, but that's just because I did a wipe and reinstall of my computer and I just happened to have that last save state.

Come on, it was just that one time... okay and all those reloads in other games to get a better RNG... but that's not totally awful right? I mean, it's not like I do it all the time...
