Project Zomboid, an open-world apocalypse-simulation of undying decisions, is available now DRM-free on GOG.com for Windows, Mac and Linux with a 40% launch discount.

Surviving the zombie apocalypse is no brainless endeavor. There are many grey matters of grave importance that need taken care of, like building or finding a sturdy shelter, scavenging for supplies, and making sure you stay mentally and physically healthy. This doesn't mean you still won't die, though.

There have been quite a few stepping stones leading up to the current state of Project Zomboid, as developers The Indie Stone will readily admit. Having been in development for over four years now, the game has undergone a significant number of improvements and alterations but the team also wants to keep implementing ambitious features like interesting interactions with NPCs and fully-functioning vehicles, as well as a reworked UI and stealth mechanics. The team is quite happy with the game's ongoing success, so these additions are expected to hit within the year, way before the actual break of the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

Make your undying wish of cleverly surviving the zombie apocalypse come true and take on Project Zomboid, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 40% discount will last until February 2, 1:59 PM GMT.

Note: This game is currently in development. See the FAQ to learn more about games in development, and check out the forums to find more information and to stay in touch with the community.

I should stress that we at The Indie Stone are huuuuuge fans of GOG, so you can be sure that everything we can do to integrate GOG / Galaxy features we will do but, because we're a very small team, we will need a bit of time to implement it all, and we're yet to investigate how complicated that process will be with our game in particular. So caveats, etc ;)

Thanks :)
welcome to the forums, Im excited by this new gog in development addition. :-)

this game reminds me of This War of Mine with zomboids. how cool is that

jalister: The main question I have about in development games on GOG is will Project Zomboid on GOG get the same level of attention as the Steam version? I don't want to be playing a version that is three updates old because favoritism is given to the Steam version.
avatar
CaptainBinky: We plan to roll out the stable updates at the same time as Steam - of course, this is a new service so we're yet to experience how this process actually takes place so there may well be an initial period of us finding our feet.

Also, I mention "stable" updates because we're not sure (at the moment) what we'll be able to do in terms of the opt-in 'beta' builds. I suspect that as we integrate support for GOG Galaxy, such things will also become possible. But these features will likely be things which are integrated over a period as opposed to being available right from the start.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm good with that answer for now, and I'm willing to see how it goes. It's always nice seeing a developer active on the GOG forum. I'm not a huge fan of early access games, but I've watched this one for a long time. I'll most likely add this to my GOG library today.

Welcome to GOG.

Thankyou - and also thankyou to everyone else for being welcoming who I didn't reply to specifically <3

Haven't played co-op myself, nor multiplayer, but I can answer questions regarding the singleplayer / general stuff if you want.

mintee: do you like the game? is it overly hard to get going at the start?
Absolutely love it - by far the best zombie survival game in many ways.
As to starting up, theres lots of options (including challenge and sandbox modes - the latter of which you can tweak the settings of). Theres also some introductory modes (such as a "week one infection" start). There WAS a tutorial a good long time ago, but due to some issues they removed NPCs - apprently these are set to return soon.

Edit: also, this game is VERY RARELY WELL DISCOUNTED. If you're on the fence, but have the cash spare... might want to consider both that, and the fact the price is likely to increase after its complete.

Thanks for taking the step and bringing your game over to GOG. Hopefully more developers will follow suit.

Question to those who have tried both: How does this compare to Dead State? Seems like this is more of a survival/sandbox style game, with little story or dialogue? Is the combat any good? I like Dead State, but the combat got pretty boring and repetitive after a while. Also, how far along is its development?

I haven't played Dead State, but I'll try to answer anyway if you don't mind :)
It is a survival sandbox game with little story and zero dialogue (unless you play multiplayer or wait for the promised npcs). The combat is realtime and pretty good I think. It feels convincing. For instance, you tire quickly in the beginning, depending on your character, and you can easily be swarmed if you're not careful. But it remains satisfying, and even after 2000+ kills it's still fun to shove a zombie to the ground and stomp its face in. The thing is, it's really easy to get infected from a zombie bite, and even a scratch to a lesser extent. Thus it's only natural to take any combat situation very seriously, since even a small lapse in concentration can net you an unwanted scratch on your forearm, or worse a bite.

It's a game in which it is really easy to roleplay as well. One of my characters kept a diary, and I had the habit of writing in it each night before In I went to sleep. It really enhanced the experience for me.

The game is very far into development and there is enough to do to keep you busy for many consecutive days. If you survive for long enough then you'll probably try to build some sort of permanent base and prepare to survive coming winter months. Considering you can start anywhere on the gigantic map with its myriad of interesting places, and the fact that you'll probably die often in the beginning, you have here a game that will keep you busy for a long time.

The only real things still missing imo, multiplayer scene excluded of which I don't know much, are
* NPCs
* New animations (like wearing a backpack and sneaking)
* some better way of covering the large distances, like a bicycle
* completion of the map (not that you'll come even remotely close to exploring even close to, say, 10% of it in a typical game)

edit: on a more personal preference level, the only other things I would like is prettier water, preferably animated, and more ambient sounds. I might be wrong on the last one though, since I haven't played in a while, and not since build 31 I think. They've added tons of stuff since I last played. Perhaps I just forgot. It's the type of game though that really benefits from well done ambient noises, like zombies growling in the night (if they're somewhat close), rain on the rooftop (depending on roof type) lightning flashes and the like.

just watched the gog stream on this and it was an absolute blast with a partner. lots to do, landscape stays the way you left it when you die, like windows broken open, bodies on ground. it gets very desperate at times. You quickly learn to be quiet and watch lines of sight and take care of wounds fast. you are most definitely not rambo here but a normal person trying to survive. i like that
Can you save at any time?

To add to Matewis - Project Zomboid is dynamic. The world moves on whether your character is active or asleep on the couch (have fun with that). Since everything is real-time and it’s so easy to die, there’s always a frantic edge to combat. It’s scary. The zombies in Dead State feel more like a resource than anything because the rules operating them are upfront, easily quantified and you have all the time in the world to use them to your advantage (by say, luring zombies into a biker gang mwhahaha!).

Absolutely loved the dead state game and always kind of wished that it's map was on the sort of scale that zomboid is.

so its an easy yes purchase for me :D

thanks.
