I miss games in the Vietnam war setting.

The last really good one was "Vietcong" (the second one was far from its predecessor's near-perfection).

Lately, I discovered the ad for "Rising Storm 2: Vietnam", got very excited - until I noticed, it's online-MP only.

Meh,...

The problem with "Vietcong" is, that I just don't get it to run on my Win10 machine.

I even bought a second version (with the add-on) of it on Ebay, because I thought, the starter (http://www.moddb.com/games/vietcong/downloads/vietcong-starter-1651) would maybe only work with the "Purple Haze" - Edition (Vietcong + Fist Alpha)...but no luck so far - when starting it up, it just gets me a black screen for the fraction of a second - and then it's the desktop again.

I guess, I have to set up my XP machine again, huh?

Yes, for some reasons the us doesn't produce a lot of games in that era...
That is strange. I am playing Vietcong (with the help of the VC Starter) just fine on my laptop with Windows 10..

What are your settings in the starter?

I understand your mockery regarding the fact, that the Vietnam war was the only one, the US have ever lost.
I also see the possibility, that this historic fact may have an impact on the decisions of US devs/pubs, whether to make such games or not.

One genuine question, however:
what has
1) the US losing a war,
respectively
2) US developers aren't willing to use the scenario
to do with the fact, that there are no more games in the Vietnam setting?

The devs/pubs of "Vietcong" were Czechs.

Yeah - I was very excited, when I stumbled over the starter - many comments hinted, that it should work
(even flawless).
However - no matter, what settings I use, the result is always the same.

The best I ever got, was the title-screen - then it's back to desktop.

I loved Vietcong, but I hated the tunnel bits. Because I didn't know I had a flashlight. Don't ask me how I managed to finish the tunnel sections...

Yes, that is indeed unfortunate..

Not sure if this will help but to my knowledge, Vietcong runs on the old LS3D engine (other games being Hidden & Dangerous 2, Chameleon and Mafia.)
Actually a few days ago I couldn't even start H&D2 and Chameleon since they kept having the same symptoms like you described with Vietcong and kept crashing straight away.

Later I realized that the culprit was the newest NVIDIA driver (382.05) that somehow made all LS3D engine games non-playable due to some incompatible DirectX shenanigans. I reverted to the drivers before (381.65) and it started working again.

Maybe it could be related? What are your current drivers? Assuming you use NVIDIA Geforce as well?

Also, below are my settings. I am running on Windows 10 64bit, NVIDIA Geforce 860M GT and an integrated Intel HD 400 graphics card, and all seems to work. :/

Thanks for your answer!
I'll have to look into that, when I'm at home.

Much appreciated!

Re: MP-only Rising Storm 2: Vietnam. I had the same disillusion with the previous Rising Storm game and talking about another less represented era, WW the Verdun game, that's also MP only.

Because sadly, for a Shooter to sell well in this age, it needs to have Mutliplayer.

But hey I had fun with the Multiplayer of Red Orchestra 2 and Rising Storm 1.

Now if only people actually played like a fucking team :P

Vietcong was, actually, one of the best (if not the best at all!) game in historical settings. I gladly buy game with with level of design equal to Vietcong even about any other period: WWI, WWII, Afghanistan, Korea or any other.

It is not about Vietnam. There is no characters, events or style. Only external looks and nothing more. You can easily change soldier's models in RS2V to orcs and goblins and this won't change much.

Try unofficial patches lying in the Internet. One with support of new screen resolutions also launched game for me on new OS.

No it does not need to have multiplayer to sell well. It can have good singleplayer and maybe also coop to be successful. Problem is a good singleplayer experience takes a lot more effort to make than a popular multiplayer one.

Regarding shooters set in Vietnam, there is 7554, though that regards the French war rather than the American one. The game is also seems very difficult to find now, props to you if you manage to get hold of it.
