I have AoE rise of rome, and 2 as well as 3 on CD. there all drm with old fashion way of a CD key, "and required to use cd every time you play" as drm which you can just change later.. so AOE Rise of Rome CD is DRM just old fashion.

most games that require you to look up codes in the manual those are drm. a lot of pc games from 1990s had them

James Bond 007; the Stealth Affair had a a word in the manual you used
The Secret of Monkey Island also had rotating wheel as drm protection

The early CD-ROM based releases did. The newest "Collectors Edition" (DVD-ROM) is released without the SafeDisc check, and also has a few patches (eg, the fix for "color rainbow" bug for W7-10 OS's plus also being pre-patched with v1.0e (which can also remove the DRM in earlier versions)). In any case the UserPatch removes all DRM anyway, and is recommended anyway for adding widescreen, fixing AI, increasing unit pop cap, etc.

Now that GOG has Civ3-5 & Xcom Enemy Unknown, I'm willing to wait until Civ 6 and Xcom 2 get here. There is no hurry.
And that's just two examples.

When I joined GOG, I read the terms carefully. As I saw it then, when I buy a game on gog.com, that game is mine. If I close my account for any reason, that game is still mine, as long as I have the installer. So to equate, it's like I'm buying the floppy disk. As long as I don't copy that floppy, my purchase agreement with GOG stands. Of course if I canceled my account, I would have to repurchase the games again, which is just as if I lost floppy disk.

The above mentioned, and especially that GOG makes older games work on newer system, is why I like GOG over any other service offering games. It is also why I prefer the "offline" installers over GOG Galaxy. I don't like the idea of buying a game that I am essentially renting forever.

That's my two (insert whatever your lowest currency denomination happens to be here).

I have a metered internet connection and cannot afford better. So GOG is absolutely perfect for me, offline installers helps a lot.

I would, but some games that I'm interested in aren't released here (because they're "2niche" for GoG, mostly). Or they're being released here LONG after steam/another platform release with no indication they'll ever come here.

It would be great. Even if I don't personally agree with the design choices in recent Civ games, the arrival of a flagship title is always good news for GOG.

I have had a steam account for 12 years. I have 400+ steam game on my account. It came to a point for me where I see a decline in steams quality of games and business practices. I choose GOG because I love the idea of DRM free. I choose GOG because they have classic titles that are not on Steam. I choose GOG because their platform has the games that I want to play. I love offline installers. I love that Galaxy is optional. I love that I have almost 100 of my GOG games backed up on Google Drive as well as a External HDD, that in 20-30 years if I want to relive some of the best games ever made all I have to do is install it. If a new AAA title comes out that I must play I will buy a console and get it on that. But I stopped chasing and hopping for amazing AAA titles a long time ago. The Witcher 3 was just an anomaly for me, and guess what! Its on GOG!

I, and many of us in here have mentioned we use other DRM-free sources... but, really, are there any of note? Humble makes it a hassle even to log in, let alone download (god forbid you want an update!). And they're more and more just becoming a Steam key reseller. Itch is there, but it's overflowing with crap...

As for "games available on Steam", no-thanks. Steam is DRM, through and through. The nominal value of a product with DRM is $0. And even then, contributing to Valve's numbers in any way damages your fellow consumers and the industry by continuing to prop up its place in the market.

And mobile platforms? Hah. Shitfestivals of so-called "games". And even more DRM!

I do let myself buy physical copies of console games, occasionally... But gaming on a console is an inferior experience to PC. And, I still "vote with my wallet" and only buy games that are exclusive for console. I can do without "trendy" games. There's so much out there.

That's more than the value I would assign to it.

For me, I consider $0 to be the value of pirated games; DRM-encumbered games are less valuable than that IMO, and therefore have negative value.

I have been known to pay 99 cents for Humble Bundles specifically to avoid getting the Steam keys.
