A stray memory popped into my frontal lobe yesterday - the memory of a sound. A particular sound which I hadn't heard in far too long.
So the same evening, I found myself blowing the dust off the cover of my 1996 copy of Diablo, and loading up for a trip down Memory Lane.
Diablo was one of the first full-price major league games I bought, and I was entranced from the opening scene at the village, with that easy-going melodic guitar riff that I always left on.
But that wasn't the sound I was listening for.
It came much, much later - about three-and-a-half hours into play, three dungeons down, when I was beginning to despair it would ever grace my headphones...
But of course, it finally did. I dispatched with the gold-lettered unique Fallen monster aptly named "Gutshank the Quick", and as his bloody torso sank to the floor a tiny group of pixels flipped into the air, and hit the floor with a soft "pinggg!"
MY PRECIOUS!!
In the two decades since, I've never tired of that sound across all three iterations of the game. I've had LAN parties at home where that sound has almost ended in fisticuffs, as some insolent thief has grabbed someone else's rightful finger jewellery. That simple sound is enough to send even the hardest gamer into paroxysms of delighted greed and hope.
So - what would be your suggestions for a Top Ten list?
Simple rules:
Must be from a game published on the PC
Just a sound effect - not a music clip or narrative
