Use GIMP. It's free, it's powerful, it's user friendly, and it's fully capable of doing everything that Photoshop is doing.

While Gimp does have its merits, usability and user-friendliness aren't in those.

If you don't manage to get PS working via Wine or something, Krita is okay as a substitute. It's not quite as good but it at least tries to be a bit like it in terms of general operation, keyboard shortcuts, etc.

+1 for Krita, although it's more painting-oriented than photo editing.

There's info about Wine tests and different photoshop versions, yell if you haven't seen them.
Last I checked, the version that you can subscribe to atm doesn't look like it's supported as well as older versions are via Wine.

If you need the latest Photoshop version: buy Windows for $ and dual boot into it whenever you need to make a quit edit on a picture, then boot back into Linux. Hopefully you're using a SSD or you can setup a virtual install of Windows (I've never done it in Linux)

There's a part in a Johnathan Blow (made Braid/the Witness) speech about Photoshop, he used that as an analagoy of what everybody else uses and industry standards may not be the best: no joke

Agree! When it comes to painting, I actually think it is the better product.
