Trajhenkhetlive: The Descent
Ah, The Descent. I highly recommend it, it's very cool. The sequel wasn't very good though.
I might try "Sinister" and "The Conjuring", despite of them having been rather destroyed by RedLetterMedia if I remember well.

I like "Fallen" a huge lot (I don't like Denzel Washington much as a person, but I found him a great actor in this), but it's more like a supernatural cop movie than horror.

I saw the original "Grudge" and "Shutter". Maybe not "The Eye", I should check this.

Lynch can be terrifying when he wants to be. But I'm not in mood for mere weirdness à la "Eraserhead" or Cronenberg. I need freezing terror.

I've watched "Rec", which I adore, and the sequel, which I loathe. "VHS" sounds a bit more of the same ?

I also watched most of the godzilla game creepypasta but it bored me too much (it did drag). I kinda got it, but, I found it more imaginative than efficient. Anyway, I'm looking for 'real' movies, as well done as possible...

I saw "The Orphanage" (I like Balaguero too). Just like "Skeleton key" ot "The Others", they are great suspenses, and beautiful films, but not really paralyzing - which is what I require right now.

I saw "The Descent" (I would actually have found it more scary, in an "Open Waters" way, without the mutant cannibal monster thingies).

And yeah, I think I've seen most classics. The Polanski ones of course (one of my two or three favorite filmmakers) including "The Tenant", which scares me (even) more than "Rosemary's baby". And Amityville, Jaws, Alien, etc...

I watch "Signs" also, which I found rather silly (I kinda overthought it, I suppose). Oddly, I found "the 6th sense" more scary.

Also, more generally, there are very few ghost movies I haven't seen, as I used to collect all these haunted-item-of-the-week titles from both western and eastern cinema (haunted cello, haunted camera, haunted submarine, haunted mobile phone, whatever, gotta catch them all)... It left me a bit jaded, I suspect.

Edit : oh and "Event Horizon" makes me laugh too hard. It's an absolutely sympathic movie, that always remind me of System Shock 2, but Fishburne, Neill, and above all the gratuitously gothic nasa spaceship are hilarious. To me it's a fun adventure movie à la "Nighmare on elm street" more than a frightening flick. The "hellraiser" analogy is valid (I still have a few unseen "Hellraiser" sequels, but I don't expect any level of scare from them).

snowkatt: the excorcist definitley still is disturbing
avatar
Wishbone: Hmm, it might be, I wouldn't know. What I do know is that if someone does plan to watch The Exorcist, I recommend that they stay far away from the Director's Cut. It's the only version I've seen, and I turned it off after 45 minutes because it was boring as hell. I've heard people who have seen both versions say the same thing, stay away from the Director's Cut.
the directors cut is just too damn long
the orginal was fine as it is at 123 minutes

the directors cut just added 10 minutes of needless padding

event horizon still is a good movie though and deserves to be watched

trentonlf: Mama was a good movie until the end. No spoilers, but the endong killed the movie for me.

Wishbone: Sadly, I've experienced that a lot lately with horror movies. One particular type I've come across far too many times lately goes like this: "We've made a horror movie which tries to make it appear as if it has been put together from real-life footage, but we can't come up with a good ending. Solution? Kill the camera man. End of movie."

That really is the worst kind of cop-out, and it tends to kill any horror movie stone dead for me.
"Real life footage" movies hold no interest for me. Every time I try to get into one the movie goes stupid (as you pointed out) and ruins anything it had going. I look forward to more movies that grabbed me like The Conjuring, but they are few and far between.
how about martyrs ?

or funny games ( both the orginal and the remake both are by haneke anyway )

event horizon has this feeling of dread that something is totally wrong here

edit : oh how about begotten ?
which totally defies any sort of description

Well, some of them are great, I think. I love Paranormal Activity 1, 2 and 5. 3 and 4 were worthless though.

trentonlf: I ubderstand why the ending had to be like it was, just didn't like it ;-)
Haha...fair enough. :)

Good ones Schnuff, I have yet to see Martyrs or I spit on your grave but I have seen The Hill haves eyes which was quite horrible in a good way. Also nice to see your official post count rising. ;)
OK, how about "Insidious"? "The Possession"? "V/H/S" has moments, but it doesn't really hold together as a solid horror flick, even in the compilation format. It was fun to watch, but I didn't find it very scary.
Another movie to consider is "Let the right one in"

Great movie
EXCELLENT movie
I liked Pandorum.
Hello Telika, I recommand you to watch The Thing (1982) by John Carpenter who also directed Prince of Darkness.
It is set in Antartica, where american scientists try to figure why norwegian scientists showed up and why there are chasing a dog.
The nightmare begins when they realised the dog is not a creature from earth. I can't talk more about the plot or you'll see Spoilers all over th place ;)
There is a feeling of insecurity all the time and the fact that the people starts going insane is really opressive.
Lot of graphic scenes and the special effects still hold up most of the time.
I hope that I helped you !
Good screening !

Great movie
Absolutely fantastic, the movie kept me thinking about it for a long while after it was over. For me it is one of the best modern horror movies made on the creature of the night. I am also glad that you recommended the original Swedish version of the movie.
