Good, bad, doesn't matter. Cheap tricks or clever tricks, I don't care.

Unrealistic horror supernatural efficient thingy. Like, uh, hmm...

What worked on me ? Okay, "The Shining" worked. "The exocist" works. "The grudge" did too, I admit, and so did "the ring". And "Darkness" and "Rec". Long ago, "Evil Dead" and "Prince of Darkness" terrified me, but nowadays I'm not sure.

Oh yeah "the changeling" and "communion" had also petrified me, somehow.

Is there anything recent, that might function on me ? I became a bit jaded. And gore itself (the "ewww" factor) tends to bore me.

But I need something to keep my attention away from reality for a while, and scary movies do it the most economic way.
high rated
I watched "Sinister" in an empty house at midnight. I went to sleep with my bedroom door locked and the closet shut tight.

I was always particularly fond of the movie "Fallen" from 1998 starring Denzel Washington. It's not a "jump-scare" movie, it's more of a creepy/slow-burn type. Also stars John Goodman, Embeth Davidtz, James Gandolfini, and Elias Koteas.
Ju-on (the original japanese version of Grudge)

Jian-gui (The Eye)

The original thai version of Shutter

Those are more psychological horrors with not much gore.
i was gonna suggest salo but that might be a bit too much

how about tetsuo the iron man and tetsuo II body hammer ?

neither are all that scary they are just weird

eraserhead is both scary and weird

and gods knows what videodrome is all about ( long live the new flesh ! )

have you watched rec and vhs yet ?

Does 1977 qualify as "recent"? If so, you could give Eraserhead a try.

NES Godzilla Creepypasta on Youtube.

Its not just a person reading the story, It includes soundtracks that were described by the writings and really scary moments. I shit you not this Creepypasta scared and engaged me more than Ben Drowned.

Just recently I watched a horror movie that was really well executed called The Conjuring. I don't get scared as much as I used to but this movie did unsettle me for one night atleast, so I highly recommend that you watch it alone if you wish to be terrified. :)

You stole my movie suggestion!! The conjuring is one of the better "horror" movies to come out recently. For funny horror I suggest "Cabin in the woods", it's a really good movie ;-)

eraserhead
the brood
the fly
videodrome
rabid

the hammer dracula movies

the orginal alien
alien 3 is a decent horror movie too

candyman 1 and 2

event horizon ( hellraiser in space but still a good movie )

and both the 1922 nosferatu and herzog's 1978 remake are worth chekcing out too

"The Grudge" scared the willies out of me as well.

Horror movies are notoriously anecdotal, but here are some recommendations.

I'm also a great fan of Jaume Balaguero, and was about to recommend "Darkness" and "[REC]" as favorites until I saw that they were already on your list.

"The Woman in Black" was quite scary, and I'd like to see it again; I don't recall if the ending is satisfying. I also remember that "The Orphanage" was a good one, though I'm a little soft on the details of it right now.

I had a friend who was so terrified after seeing John Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" that just mentioning the movie would upset her for weeks. I didn't find it scary at all, though I did really enjoy it - it's a real divider, that one. Lots of people can't stand it, on account of mostly nothing happening throughout.

"Ils" - "They" - was a movie that had me edge-of-the-seat for the whole first hour, though the resolve is a bit of a letdown and watching it a second time is no fun at all.

I'll update later if you need more; this is off the top of my head. And another vote for "Sinister," mentioned above.

Anything with Adam Sandler.
Ju-on. Watched at 3am in the dark alone. Bad idea.

Oh and Dale and Tucker vs Evil lol
GOOD CALL stg83! The Conjuring is one of the newest scariest movies I've ever seen and I'm amazed because old or new, haunted house movies are so damn hard to pull off because it's so much easier to make it look silly than scary ie the Liam Neeson remake of the Haunting,

I also just re-watched Grave Encounters which while being a HUUUUUGE Blair Witch rip off was actually WAAAAAAAY better than the Blair Witch.

Also I recently ordered The Human Centipede which I've heard while not scary is really disturbing so I'm looking forward to that.

Of course you can't go wrong with the classics, the orignal Amityville Horror, the Sentinal, the Exorcist, and the George C Scott version of The Changeling.

Deadgirl . It's the best zombie/necrophilia film ever made .
