I don't really miss the golden age of fantasy art because I'm an active boardgamer and classic (and classy) fantasy artwork has never really left the field. Some examples here, here and here. Fantasy Flight Games is one of my favourite boardgame publishers, and that is in part due to their awesome breathtaking fantasy artwork.

The same way I feel about everything anime- I can't stand it. No, I'm all about western art. Don't get me wrong, if you like that japanese stuff- power to you. But if I never see another anime face again it will be too soon.

agreed, although I love the new art, it lacks the careful painted feeling of the old, using digital brushes out all the imperfections, everything is just a bit too perfect and easy

I have the original calendars put out by hilldebrant, and have collected frazetta in the past. all their art told a story, down to the tiniest details, which I would love to spend hours looking for after smoking a fat one... lol back in the day

People say it all the time: they’d love to get into science fiction or fantasy, but they’ve no idea where to start. If this is you (or if you’re one of those stubborn folks who looks snootily down on genre), listen up. Your trusty Flavorwire editors have a few suggestions for you — that is, a whole 50 sci-fi and fantasy novels that are well worth your time, whether you’re brand new to the concept of dragons and/or spaceships or a seasoned veteran. A few notes on the construction of the list: no short stories or short story collections, no matter how brilliant (looking at you, Kelly Link), were included. Also, in the interest of fairness, only one work or series by any given author was included. Finally, because this is a list of novels that adults should read, it skews light on the YA, including only those books that grown-ups should pick up if they missed them in their teens. Even with all of the above, you’ll probably have quibbles. After all, 50 novels over two genres doesn’t even begin to cover it. So air them (politely, please) in the comments and you’ll add to all of our reading lists. And I miss how I used to be.

I agree for some of the old fantasy art, but the scifi one was often ugly :P

Haha, that's funny. You know, many Europeans say that or something similar. Until it dawns on them that the most famous European cartoon series they loved as kids were animes, too. :-)

It's a little known fact that many of the famous European cartoon series from the late 70s and early 80s that were usually produced in West Germany (sometimes in cooperation with Switzerland and/or Austria) were actually drawn in Japan by Japanese contractors because that was a lot cheaper than drawing them here.

The most famous examples of these are probably Maya, Heidi, Pinocchio and Bannertail.

Maybe you could look at the works of Ohrai Noriyoshi (sadly deceased late 2015).

I know he was mostly known outside of Japan because of its Star Wars related works, and in Japan because of what he did concerning Godzilla, Koei games and WWII mostly, but he also did wonderful other works especially SciFi and historical vibes.

Sure he may have already been seen as "oldschool" after Y2K if you look at what most other artists did in the areas he worked for (ads, books, games), everything went "too anime" imho, and that resulted into the "everything looks the same" vibe we have today, sadly.
He wasn't the only one who had a very distinctful touch, but he is surely missed. :(

More famously, many cartoons in the 90s were drawn in Korea and Japan by famous studios. For example, Batman TAS (and company), Animaniacs, Futurama, and uh...Superbook. TMZ did animation for a lot of WB works.

Trust me, I'm not one of them. I didn't like any of the cartoons you linked, and I think they all look like crap :P
