I will admit F.E.A.R. blew me away with how well its graphics holds up today, everything feels clean, not a single polygonal jaggyness and the texture quality is completely smooth its glossy.

The Shadows are pitch black.

Graphics certainly never got that better beyond this.

toxicTom: I found neither scary.
That's because neither is scary.

I think the point being made is that Doom 3 is less not scary than F.E.A.R.

Or something to that effect. :P
You know what is the problem in regards to how scary F.E.A.R. is? The simple fact that many idiots over the years over reacted to the game on Youtube etc. The game was never about loud annoying jump scares and endless horror. It is an excellent shooting game with unsettling moments in it, nothing more.

F.E.A.R. is not a scary game because it is not intended to be. It is suppose to be unnerving, unsettling and to make you a little on edge. I doubt the game would be any good if it was endless jump scares.
They're both not really scary, FEAR is a much better game though because as an FPS it's more fun and really challenges you (I never used bullettime cheat) and the horror it has is mostly psychological and atmospheric whereas DooM 3 is a competent corridor shooter but nothing more, the horror relies on that you are a religious type, which I am not, and grotesque monsters.
In the same way as Don't Look Now is not as scary as Freddy vs Jason. Still... what is the better film, though.

I like the action better in FEAR, the tension was scary enough for me and the enemy AI is actually very good. Doom 3 remains the better game graphically.

@Elmo: Next time leave a spoiler warning please!!! You literally told me a part of the story in a couple of lines :-)

Spoilers for a now 13 year old game that most people interested should know by now....
Neither are scary, though Doom 3 has some jump scares. F.E.A.R works really well as a shooter with some horror for flavour, but it could never scare me because Alma is a goofy muppet while my character is The One.

Neither Doom 3 nor FEAR is the least bit scary. Both are highly repetitive and thus extremely boring games in which the player just keeps traveling through the exact same environments and fighting the exact same enemies endlessly. Doom 3 is outright bad and FEAR is mediocre at best. I have no idea why so many gamers give those crappy games acclaim.

Because their fun. I mean I don't know why people praise Half Life 2 to heaven and back when its still the same shooter.

"More scarier"? oO

Also: Are you talking about the BFG edition or the actual Doom 3?

From the Latin, "scariatu".
Jumpscares do not make a game "scary", jumping when something sudden/loud is shoved into your face is a normal physical reaction no different than pulling your hand away from hot water. "Scary" comes from actual atmosphere, ie Silent Hill 1 as a good example.
