Also, there is something more infinitely terrifying about space. It's hostile, desolate. In space anything can kill you. In an office all you need to worry about are is getting your tie caught in a paper shredder.

I remember playing the F.E.A.R. demo back in the day and being completely on edge all the way through thanks to the atmosphere and constant creepy feeling of threat the game created through its sound design, lighting, etc..

However, when I finally played the full game years later that was completely gone. I still immensely enjoyed it as a shooter with what is probably still the best AI in the genre. But as a supposed horror game it fell completely flat.

I don't know, maybe I was desensitized in the mean time by all the Japanese little-child-horror movies...

Admittedly I haven't played FEAR. But from what I've seen of it, yeah, there really is nothing scary about it. A bit creepy, a bit sppoky, but really it's just a shooting game. In dark, empty office buildings.

I have a theory: the more people complain about a "horror" game, the more uncomfortable they are with it. That is to say, the game has successfully evoked feelings of discomfort. And boy do people complain about Doom 3's darkness and flashlight *a lot.* And these two are exactly the two things that really make Doom 3 work; without them, all it is is a completely mediocre shooter.

I've seen similar complaints about the enemies & fighting in Alan Wake, and I think it's just that people can't handle it. They can't accept and deal with the discomfort, so they just call the game bad.

How early do you find out that you're her son? Because I agree that if you know you're her son then you know you don't have anything to fear from her. I remember figuring that out, but I can't remember where in the game I was.
Incidentally, the game tries to tell a creepy story through voice messages, and to date the game that does this best for me is System Shock 2.

I enjoyed Doom 3 a lot, but the jump scares wore off after a while. The only standout thing I can remember that I found unnerving were those damn spider things :P

I found neither scary.

As a game I find FEAR has a better flow (at least the main game). Doom 3 admittedly has the better environments.

In general FEAR was more fun... I took me several years and quite a number of attempts to make it through Doom 3 since I always felt bored by the latter at some point.
