Sometimes they may need some tinkering. Some may not like 64-bit OSes, so I have to run them on Wine in Linux, in a 32-bit prefix.

But they all work, one way or another.

What is this travesty? Is there really no game I can buy here going to offer me the pleasure of complaining about it not working? Will I ever be able to request a refund?

Damn you, GOGBear, your store is evil! Evil!

Hehe!

But you have to admit that the poor person is not amused if they cannot get their games to work. Can you try to think back before you became a lvl 99 wizard at computing?

Granted.

Still, expecting an age-old game to work on *YOUR PC* (who knows what manner of software and hardware you've thrown into the mix) without at least some basic tinkering is a bit too much to assume IMHO.

GOG usually gets you all the way there, sometimes they can only get you ever so close.

Some forum digging and spending hours getting something to work gets your wizardry level upgraded for later on. Nothing good comes easy.
Bah - GOG makes it easy...

Back in my day you had to deal with boot disks - config.sys and autoexec.bat files - trying to load in CDROM and sound card drivers while keeping at least 590k out of 640 k of ram free

Ahh the good old days.

People, certainly have it alot easier now days. What with the internet and such when a game doesn't work usually a way to get it running can be found with a quick search.

But back in those days, if a game didn't work then it usually ment something was wrong with your setup. So you'd quite often have to spend hours trying different configs. Good times.
Speaking of which, I seem to remember Utlima 7 as one of the hardest games to run. I literally did need a separate config.sys and autoexec.bat for it due to the memory requirements. It literally needed to clean of everything due to the memory requirements.

I wouldn't know that, I come from the HIMEM.SYS days. Thanks for making me feel... well, less old. It's rare these days :P.
HiMEM was such a bliss when it came.

I remember trying to get Dreamweb to work. I think it may have been the most difficult to get right, back in the day (from the ones I played).

So, anyway, how do parents teach problem solving to their kids these days?

And still some games refused to run, due to not enuff amount of base memory.

Aren't most of them as clueless as their kids, if not more so ?.
I used to have different floppies for different games with their respective autoexec.bat and config.sys files to run them. Did you guys do the same or did you redo it every time?

Ah, true. I randomly overheard many conversations between parents and children that made me glad I'm not bringing anyone into this world.
