Microfish_1: REDESIGN INCOMING
BEGINNING FEBRUARY

++++++++++++

So my price will go up; my games will go down, and my sub discount will go away= even fewer purchases from HB store than previously
Well can say i'm really glad i cancelled my yearly Sub a few months back and stuck with the cancellation and that this January Bundle (with Mafia which i really wanted) actually was my last bundle and seems like then i'm done with them for good.

And ya the "higher discount when longer subbed" seems like a way trying to lock in people while meanwhile they dont even might use this discount (ofc high spenders on humble will profit from it a lot - i personally bought 1-2 Games outsides bundles on humble over years so would not profit from it at all)

While i rarely used the trove it now being locked behind a launcher feels off as well - for me it still had some appeal that it just was a simple bland page with quick access to the games

Pricing and selection of games the first bundles will tell - at least with the new pricing the might (hopefully/possibly) move away a bit from the crazy discounts for new customers and such while locking in (except for the higher discount) current customers or leaving them to a crazy price hike

Leroux: Yup, sounds like they're ditching the Build-Your-Own-Bundle concept in order to go back to classic Humble Monthly while - oddly - keeping the Choice name (I guess they redefine it to mean their curative choice now, ha ha).

We've had the "smaller but more attractive game selection" discussion here before. It remains to be seen whether that's a good or a bad thing. Personally, I'm sceptical, because fewer games also means higher chances that I would not be interested in these particular games/genres, no matter how "valuable" they are, which might lead to even more pausing, but we'll see.

The discount resets and replacing the DRM-free Humble Trove with a subscription- and client-based Humble Indie "Game Pass" type of thing are definitely Good News (tm) in my book, not what I'd consider an improvement. I know they're not completely scrapping the Trove, but it sounds like they won't concentrate on adding to it anymore and you will have to use the client in order to access it.

Oh well. At least they put an end to those different subscription tiers and the silly premium price point.
It looks like they renamed "Trove" to "Vault" and added "Game Pass"

I'mm also skeptical just because there are so many subjectively "good" games that i have 0 interest in.

If I divorce myself from my HB account and take a step back; they raised the price $8 to see what everything was before you purchase... if they had done this across the board for everyone (eg scrapped classic outright from the start) it would probably have been worth it to know what you were buying, and people like me (very limited income) would pass 9.5 times out of 10.
Similarly, given US inflation of 6.8% last year, I can see how they want to raise prices. They also no longer officially allow anyone to buy the 6-month plan, but I was able to renew it after they pulled it from the market.
That said, I need another launcher like I need a... you get the point ;)

I profited a lot from the 20% discount. I've purchased lots (40?) of unbundled and otherwise-unaffordable games over the last few years partly because i try to avoid purchasing anything that isn't 75% off or better, but if the game was 60% off, the extra 20% off stacked was quite nice.

What remains to be seen is if you can still gift your 20% off. In which case I know someone who buys every single bundle always; she has been gracious enough to loan me her discount code when I was going to buy something.

anyway,

time to download any and all trove games you might want.
I've been continuously pausing my classic subscription every month for almost two years, barring one missed month at the start of the pandemic when I was distracted, I keep considering just cancelling to avoid the hassle, but I also hold out hope that a good bundle is just around the corner.
From this Reddit post:
This is an official confirmation that the change from Humble Trove to Vault, which requires a separate Windows-only app, will not support Linux or Mac downloads. So if there’s anything in trove you may want to play in the future, download it now.
And not directly related, but what is said in this Reddit post may as well affect future Humble Choices, where they've been releasing less and less DRM free titles each month, and even pulling some DRM free titles from their store. And the launcher only make things worse, since launchers are almost always used as a facilitator of DRM.

I have no problem w/ launchers existing, as long as they are an option - like GOG Galaxy does in most instances.

The problem is like you said: most ALSO now use it to facilitate DRM. And the DRM's often an option for the dev's to turn on, if they want to - as there are some games (DOSBox, Indies, Larian games, etc) on Steam and on Epic that don't have DRM.

We should be given installer files (for the base-game, DLC's, Expansions, Extras, etc) from the launcher if we use that method to get them - and yes, also we also should be able to download from the site via the web-site and web browser like GOG does if you say do not use client-app program like Galaxy.

I should NEVER need the client to install the game, if say the service goes away. As long as I have installers or the files, it should work WITHOUT needing the client-app.

These installers should work when NOT running the launcher and offline - and that I can store them on hard drives, SSD's, whatever, DVD's, BR's, etc.

now i have 8 launchers , 2 only needed for 1-1 game ,this is ridiculous
no wonder why most people just buy games on steam , these other stores publishers are stupid , why dont they make another launcher which every one of them can share ,use and support and have a chance to compete against steam
it is like those linux fanatics who make a new distro all the time instead of help the already established distros

The ironic thing is that I occasionally bought games on Humble Store only because Choice gave me an additional discount on them. So in a way the store profited from offering me this discount because it lured me into buying games I wouldn't have bought on their store otherwise. I see no point in "working" for this discount though by continuously subscribing to Choice bundles I'm not really interested in. I will keep pausing when I don't like the bundles, and I will most probably also buy even less from Humble Store because the Choice discount resetting every time I pause will just make their prices unattractive to me.

I just realized that I haven't bought a bundle from Humble for years, yet I was buying almost all the bundles they released a few years ago. They just weren't the same after IGN acquisition sadly.

Just a heads up for mac & linux users

Humble begins a shift away from Mac and Linux support
The Humble Choice subscription service will soon require a Windows-only launcher.

Humble Bundle is a digital storefront that, since 2010, has regularly offered bundles of games with the promise that the profits are split between charities and developers. I'm sure we've all bought one at some point, because Humble does produce the odd stonking deal, and some of Humble's other principles are important to users, too: part of the pitch from the start was Linux support.

Valve has made enormous strides with Linux support in recent years, but before even that Humble was insisting that games in the company's bundles had to have both Linux and Mac support. Linux gaming obviously exists in something of a weird spot, simply because some developers consider (rightly or wrongly) that the commercial value of a Linux version is minimal: Hence Valve's strategy being Proton, a 'compatibility layer' that essentially allows Windows games to run on Linux operating systems and reduces the burden on the individual developer.

Whatever the wider context, Humble is now moving away from Mac and Linux with its flagship subscription service, Humble Choice. The way this sub works is changing, from multiple tiers to a single $12/month tier, which gets you a few game giveaways a month plus access to the Humble Trove of older games and the Humble Games Collection of more recent games. This new offer comes with a new requirement for a Humble launcher app, which is fantastic as I don't have enough of those already, which will be Windows-only.

Redditor Kabukistar posted the email they received from Humble to Humble Choice members, headlined 'Retiring Mac & Linux Trove games':

"We want to give you a heads up that starting February 1, Mac and Linux versions of the DRM-free games currently in the Humble Trove will no longer be available.

"As a Humble Choice member, you can still download them to keep for your personal collection until January 31. Windows PC versions of many of these games will still be available to download in the upcoming Humble app, alongside the brand-new Humble Games Collection."

There's some confusion about exactly what Humble is doing and what it means for the company's OS support in future: Something not helped by the fact that this change has been announced as quietly as possible, and there's no official word beyond that email to subscribers. It's unclear what the rationale behind the decision was, and how far-reaching it will be within what is now a considerably sized digital retailer.

I've contacted Humble and put some questions to the company, and will update with any response.

Humble subscribers who wish to keep Mac or Linux versions of these games have until February 1 to download them, after which they won't be available from the Humble site. Curiously enough the Humble Trove library currently consists of 79 games but Humble's now promising '50+' at launch: One wonders whether there's been some background attrition with Linux-loving developers.

The new Humble Choice has arrived. The available games are:

Before We Leave
Black Book
Borderlands 3
Borderlands 3: Director's Cut
Calico
Everhood
Just Die Already
Paradise Lost
Per Aspera

Really?
So much for "maximum bang for your buck". Fewer games, same quality level as before. If they had at least included the first (!) Season Pass for Borderlands 3, not just a measly Director's Cut DLC ...

("Director's Cut" as in "This is the original vision of the creators, before we decided to cut it from the main game and sell it as one of the gazillion overpriced Borderlands DLCs"? ;P)

I've been pausing every month for over a year like a few guys here and just noticed that they made it less obvious how to pause now.

You have to go into settings and look for an option to skip a month.

At this point, I honestly don't know why I haven't canceled yet.
